Orlando Cepeda was one of the original San Francisco Giants. He made his major league debut at Seals Stadium on April 15, 1958 - opening day of the Giants first year in San Francisco. The "Baby Bull" wasted little time endearing himself to the local fans. In only his second at bat, he hit the major league's first west coast homer. The Giants went on to defeat the rival Dodgers 8-0. Cepeda went on to become one of the most popular Giants of all time. Cepeda was born Sept. 17, 1937 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He came to the U.S. when he was 16, and was assigned to a team in Salem, VA. The day before his first game, he found out his father had died in Puerto Rico. His father was Pedro "Perucho" Cepeda, often called the "Babe Ruth" of Puerto Rican baseball, and was a national hero there. Orlando used his $500 signing bonus to bury his father. Cepeda was a part of the Giants' early focus on Latin players, including Juan Marichal, the Alou brothers, and Jose Pagan. His infectious, cheerful attitude, enthusiasm for the game, and immense talent soon made him a fan favorite.

It was the first year the Giants played in the Bay Area after relocating from Brooklyn and the team included the legendary "say hey kid," Willie Mays, and a young rookie from Puerto Rico named Orlando Cepeda. Viva Cepeda was a tribute to the great first baseman and outfielder Orlando Cepeda, who in 1958 won hands down Rookie of the Year after batting .312 and hitting 25 homeruns. But as much as Cepeda loved baseball he also loved music and was known for his attendance at Latin and jazz events. He loved music so much he was one of the first players to drag a record player and albums into the locker room to enjoy and share his music. Orlando enjoyed a glorious career in the Bay Area until 1966 when he was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals and in 1967 was voted National League Player of the Year after batting .325 with 25 homers and a league-leading 111 RBI. But Orlando was a salsero and would jump on stage with Tito Rodr­guez or Tito Puente wherever he ran into them to sit in on congas.

In 1958, he made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants, the first of his half-dozen big league teams. During his nine-year stay in the Bay Area, he played with future National League president Bill White and four eventual members of the Hall of Fame: Willie Mays, Willie McCovey Juan Marichal and Gaylord Perry. A trade in the middle of the 1966 season sent him to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he played with the Hall of Fame likes of Bob Gibson, Lou Brock and Steve Carlton, and became friendly with such notables as Curt Flood, Roger Maris, and current New York Yankees' broadcaster Tim McCarver. After a short stint in St. Louis that included two pennants and a world championship, the Cardinals traded him to the Atlanta Braves for another well-known nameJoe Torre. Just when his career seemed at a standstill, the American League adopted the designated hitter rule, made-to-order for Cepeda's brittle knees. The Boston Red Sox signed him specifically for DH duty, allowing him to play a full season with the likes of Luis Aparicio, Carl Yastrzemski and Carlton Fisk. The following year, a surprising spring training release led to his final major league stopthe Kansas City Royals. Just as Cepeda was saying good-bye to the game, he was also saying hello to a player named George Brett, a rookie third baseman struggling to find his way with the Royals.

ORLANDO CEPEDA 2001 Ernie Banks Positive Image Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Orlando Cepeda was a lifetime .297 hitter with 379 home runs and 1,364 RBIs during his 17-year playing career with the Giants, Cardinals, Braves, both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player. He is one of only four San Francisco Giants to have his uniform number retired joining former teammates Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, and Juan Marichal. …That it took so long for the "Baby Bull" to be recognized by Cooperstown was the only surprise. Baby Bull: From Hardball to Hard Time and Back The legacy he is leaving is an impressive one indeed. His commitment to community service includes credentials for a Humanitarian Hall of Fame.
