INNING 7: THE CAPITAL OF BASEBALL
Ninety percent of hitting is mental; the other half is physical.
Dodgers fans, October 10, 1955. Photo Credit: National Baseball Hall of Fame Library, Cooperstown, NY The Capital of Baseball celebrates the glorious heyday of New York City baseball, where for ten straight years a local team always played in the World Series and almost always won, while growing postwar economic pressures send old teams in search of new cities. Rare newsreel film and interviews illuminate some of baseball's most memorable moments. Highlights:
  • Manager Casey Stengel rebuilds the Yankee dynasty with switch-hitting slugger Mickey Mantle and the imperturbable talents of Yogi Berra.
Bobby Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world" sets off fireworks at the Polo Grounds, as television carries the action coast-to-coast.
The Negro Leagues fade into history as African-American stars like Willie Mays, Monte Irvin, Roy Campanella, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson and Henry Aaron follow Jackie Robinson into the majors.
Falling attendance forces many east coast teams to head west, causing the first shift in baseball's landscape in fifty years.

Roy Campanella Jr. I met director-producer Roy Campanella Jr. at Jerry's Deli on Beverly Boulevard on June 18, 2002. A film history buff, and the creator of the mini-studio Directors' Circle Filmworks, Campanella (son of baseball great Roy Campanella) seeks to emulate "the old studio operation. The buck stops here with one person. "I made a longterm lease of 12,000 square feet at the Lacy Street [Production Center] north of downtown LA. There's production space, art department, wardrobe... We have a small construction mill. Lacy was really not a studio but a series of warehouses where you could shoot. "I had a ten picture slate with BET (Black Entertainment Television cable channel). I decided that with that commitment I could create a studio in microcosm. We have the lowest cost studio you could imagine. The cost of our place per month doesn't run much more than a luxury apartment in Beverly Hills." Luke: "I had a girlfriend who paid $2500 a month for her Beverly Hills apartment." Roy: "That's about what I've got 12,000 square feet for."

Baseball-Reference.com Roy Campanella was born on November 19, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a child he realized he had a talent and love for the game of baseball. His pursuit of greatness took him through the sandlots, high school, and then into the professional ranks. In 1937, at the age of fifteen, Roy was spotted playing a semi-pro game. The Negro leagues really wanted him. He was too young to play full time, so he went to school during the week and when the weekend rolled around he played in the Negro league. The following year, he quit school and played baseball full time. For nine seasons, Roy Campanella, better known as "Campy", played in the Mexican and Negro leagues. He was a man among boys. His feats are legendary, and many people still talk about him today. It is said he could throw out any base runner in the league from his knees. He proved it several times over. In 1948, at the age of 27, Campy moved into Major League Baseball. He was signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers. Roy was the first black catcher in the league. Campanella was a fixture behind the plate for nine seasons. He led the National League in putouts for six seasons, hit two hundred forty two home runs, and caught in the World Series five times. During his career, he was the National League Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1953, and 1955.

HOLMAN STADIUM
Historic Holman Stadium
Home of The Nashua Pride Renovation of Holman Stadium Almost minutes after Nashua entered the Atlantic League as a charter member in 1998, work began on Historic Holman Stadium to create a facility that meets the playing standards of today. The renovations were extensive, starting with the fan conveniences that Holman had never offered. Chair-backed seats, a custom-engineered Bose sound system, light poles taken out of the fans' view, and a non-obtrusive backstop were the first orders of business. Then came some creature comforts like a new picnic pavilion behind the left-field fence that puts the fans in the left-fielder's hip pocket. Bullpens now invite fans to see professional baseball pitchers up close. A concession facility was gutted and rebuilt to provide high quality food with minimized lines. For the quality of play, the playing surface was completely excavated after winter activities all but destroyed the field. Then, with mountains of displaced dirt in what would become the outfield, it was rebuilt from the sand up. The best Kentucky Bluegrass was rolled out to compliment the activities. The details even included the dirt's rich red- brown color, gray warning tracks and perfectly constructed mounds. Stadium lights were upgraded from the original 1948 fixtures to modern state-of -the- art fixtures that now bring the lighting at Holman to Class AAA facility standards. The outfield wall was designed to provide an exciting brand of baseball, with short porches and "Triple Alley" in right-center field. A scoreboard upgrade was also undertaken, complete with backlit ad panels.

H unt Auctions' semiannual late summer auction of sports memorabilia in Exton, Pennsylvania, featured balls, bats, and trophies consigned by the widow of Roy Campanella. "Campanella was widely regarded as the finest overall catcher in major league history," said David Hunt, who organizes two live auctions each year, held at the Inn at Chester Springs in Exton, Pennsylvania. "He played under Negro League legend Biz Mackey with the Baltimore Elite Giants and became an all-star as an adept defensive player with a potent bat. He was on the championship Baltimore team in 1939 and appeared in several East-West all-star Negro League teams from 1937 to 1945." His ten years in the major leagues were even more impressive. He received the most valuable player award three times in the 1950's. The August 22 and 23 sale grossed $1.8 million for just over 1180 lots, the most ever for a Hunt live auction. The 80 lots from the Campanella consignment brought in more than $600,000 of the total. It began with autographed balls and included bats, framed awards, trophies, and autographs. The MVP awards evoked the most excitement for the 50 or so collectors in the salesroom and seven bidders on the phones. The octagonal sterling plaques mounted on black stained wood have the words "Kenesaw Mountain Landis Memorial Baseball Award" in raised block letters around a baseball diamond. Under a 10k gold bust of Landis are the words "Most Valuable Player National League," and in gold is "Roy Campanella." Under his name in silver is "Brooklyn Dodgers," and under that on a gold baseball on crossed bats is the date of the award. All three plaques are the same, but the dates on the baseballs are 1955, 1953, and 1951.

Roy Campanella biography
Roy Campanella biography, the first black player in baseball. He played catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Roy Campenella showed up in the Brooklyn Dodgers' spring training camp in 1948 and pronounced the best catcher in all of baseball by Branch Rickey. Then Rickey sent Campenella (Campy) to Saint Paul's team in the American Association to break the color barrier in that league. Today, an ballplayer with Campanella's skill would be seeking free agency and making millions, not shrugging his shoulders over accepting an assignment in the Minor Leagues. But in 1948, Roy Campanella was an African American who toiled in the Negro Leagues, praying for someone to be brave enough to desegregate Major League Baseball. bodyOffer(26266) Born in 1921, Campy grew up in Philadelphia, spending his free time on the streets playing baseball and stickball. Free time was minimal, however. Like many children living through the Depression, he worked to help his family. At age twelve, Roy delivered milk at three a.m. and had to make sure he was home by five so that he could help load up the family truck with the vegetables his father sold. When that chore was done, he cleaned up and hurried off to school. After school he sold newspapers or shined shoes, whatever he could do to earn extra money. At fourteen, while playing ball with men in their twenties, he attracted the attention of a Negro League scout and after a two-game stint with the Bacharach Giants (a semi-pro team), he signed with the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro League. In 1936, it was as close to the Major Leagues as Campy could hope to come. Even so, he was a professional baseball player and he had not even celebrated his fifteenth birthday.
