The widow of Roy Campanella, the Hall of Fame catcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, has decided to auction off her husband's three Most Valuable Player awards and other prized trophies in Chester County this month. The Aug. 23 auction will also include Campanella's Hall of Fame plaque, his No. 39 blue warm-up jacket and the shoes he wore in his last game. Campanella's widow, Roxie, said she decided to sell her husband's trophies because she no longer felt the need to keep them. "I'm not selling them because of the money (his three NL MVP awards from 1951, 1953 and 1955 are expected to sell for at least a total of $100,000); I am selling them because I am afraid of keeping them," said Roxie Campanella. "I decided to let the public-the people who really appreciate them-have them." Campanella's championship rings are not for sale, which the family has retained. Roxie said her husband's only World Series ring was stolen about 25 years ago.

Campy had a lot of little boy in him
    By Nick Acocella
    Special to ESPN.com
"The wheelchair didn't stop him. There's an old saying, 'A mind is a terrible thing to waste.' And his wasn't wasted. I don't think Roy really, really believed that he was in a wheelchair at the time. Because he was so exuberant," says former major leaguer Lou Johnson on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Roy Campanella became the last important piece of the Boys of Summer Brooklyn Dodgers when he went behind the plate in 1948. He also became the melancholy symbol of those teams in more than 30 years of public appearances in the wheelchair to which he was confined following a 1958 auto accident. Even Roy Campanella did not begin his career at such an age. Defensively, Campy is considered the standard not only for his era but also, with the arguable exception of Johnny Bench, for the history of the National League. Offensively, he hit 242 home runs in his 10 seasons; these include a record-setting 40 as a receiver in 1953. He had a lifetime average of .276 and knocked in 856 runs. Together with his handling of pitchers and clubhouse cheerleading role, his defensive and offensive talents netted him three Most Valuable Player awards in the fifties. In 1969, the man who said "You got to have a lot of little boy in you to play this game" became the second African-American player elected to the Hall of Fame. His former teammate, Jackie Robinson, was the first.

Here are Roy Campanella posters and photos now being auctioned off at eBay . This is about the best place we've found for getting the poster you want at the right price. If there are no listings above, it could be that nobody is selling them right now, but it could also be a bug in the search. You may want to click over and search for his name, and/or number 39, and/or for the Dodgers. If you still can't find the Roy Campanella poster you're looking for, you could ask in the Dodgers discussion forum if anybody else knows who sells them. By the way, if you're looking to sell a Roy Campanella poster , good old eBay is probably still your best bet. Thanks to eBay's extremely active sports memorabilia auctions, it's easy for anyone to auction off their baseball posters, photos, and other collectibles without a dealer getting in the middle and taking 50%. Click here for eBay , or eBay Canada , if that's where you're located. Sincerely
