The Roy and Roxie Campanella Physical Therapy Scholarship Foundation awards academic scholarships to students who wish to pursue the health care field of physical therapy based on the students ability to demonstrate a cultural sensitivity to the patient. These financial awards assist senior physical therapy students who successfully exhibit awareness of cultural and ethical considerations that contribute to optimum patient care and recovery. In 1958, Roy was involved in a tragic automobile accident that left him paralyzed until his death in June 1993. During these 35 years, Roxie's commitment, knowledge, and dedication exemplified the essential role needed to sustain and advance the physically challenged family. I'm pleased to invite you to share in a cause that was close to Roy's heart. As a result of Roy's experiences he wanted to find a way to reach out to others who were embarking on a "second life" due to spinal cord injury. It was his dream to create a program that would provide needed equipment, education, information, aid, support and encouragement to those living with injury related paraplegia and to provide scholarships to students completing their studies in the field of physical therapy. The Roy and Roxie Campanella Foundation is the result of Roy's dream. I'm proud of what we've accomplished so far and I look forward to continuing Roy's work. Please join me at the exciting fund raising events we have scheduled.

    Roy Campanella
Roy Campanella could have been the first black player in baseball. Instead, he became Jackie Robinson's teammate on the Brooklyn Dodgers and a great catcher whose career was cut short by a car accident.
Roy Campenella showed up in the Brooklyn Dodgers' spring training camp in 1948 and pronounced the best catcher in all of baseball by Branch Rickey. Then Rickey sent Campenella (Campy) to Saint Paul's team in the American Association to break the color barrier in that league. Today, an ballplayer with Campanella's skill would be seeking free agency and making millions, not shrugging his shoulders over accepting an assignment in the Minor Leagues. But in 1948, Roy Campanella was an African American who toiled in the Negro Leagues, praying for someone to be brave enough to desegregate Major League Baseball. bodyOffer(26259) Born in 1921, Campy grew up in Philadelphia, spending his free time on the streets playing baseball and stickball. Free time was minimal, however. Like many children living through the Depression, he worked to help his family. At age twelve, Roy delivered milk at three a.m. and had to make sure he was home by five so that he could help load up the family truck with the vegetables his father sold. When that chore was done, he cleaned up and hurried off to school. After school he sold newspapers or shined shoes, whatever he could do to earn extra money. At fourteen, while playing ball with men in their twenties, he attracted the attention of a Negro League scout and after a two-game stint with the Bacharach Giants (a semi-pro team), he signed with the Baltimore Elite Giants of the Negro League. In 1936, it was as close to the Major Leagues as Campy could hope to come. Even so, he was a professional baseball player and he had not even celebrated his fifteenth birthday.

Just 5'9" but solidly built, he had already proven himself as a catcher during nine years in the Negro National League , the winter leagues, and Mexico. In 12 additional seasons, 10 in the majors, he was one of the era's outstanding players, and his leadership and indefatigable enthusiasm made him one of the most popular players in the game. leaving, we heard a voice saying You ve got it, you ve got the touch. It was royCampanella who had Part of roy is always with me when I play baseball.
    http://www.hihard1.com/dtw/campypg4.htm
Recollections of Roy I recall an instance at one of my earlier fantasy camps at Dodgertown. The first day we always had tryouts. I was in the last group at the
pitching strings area and the last one to do our 10 pitches. By now, everyone else was gone except the catcher and myself. After warming up, I began by throwing 5 fast balls in a row for a strike. I finished off the last 5 pitches with sliders and curve balls. 10 strikes in a row
and I was feeling great and began walking to the locker room with the catcher. As we were leaving, we heard a voice saying "You've got it, you've got the touch." It was Roy Campanella who had been in the gardens next to the pitching strings and saw me throw the 10 strikes. There was a big smile on his face. We spoke for several minuets about pitching, staying within yourself, and having fun at what
you are doing. Several times, he said "You've got the Touch". In coming years, I recall Roy would be watching live batting practice on the fields. I was traditionally a dead pull hitters with warning track power. I kept hearing him say "Hit that ball to right", "Hit that line drive" "You can do it", I know you can do it". After taking my cuts, we would have discussions on hitting. This went on for 3-4 years and eventually I began getting better control of my hitting, using more of the field and hitting to right. Now, every time I get a hit to right field I always say "Thank you Roy". I've been playing baseball for 13 years now as an adult. I pitch 20-30 games a year
