HALL OF FAME INDUCTION Joe Ledford/The Star
Former Royals player George Brett Brett struggled to hold his emotions in check while thanking his brothers and others in a speech that lasted almost 18 minutes. Brett's speech mirrors his career
George Brett has always had a flair for the dramatic. So it was only fitting that, on the day he was catapulted into baseball immortality, Brett hit one out of the park. "He had the best speech up there," said Eva Piercey, from Overland Park. Full text of Brett's Hall of Fame induction speech
God, Robin, you don't know how lucky you were to go first. I have been sitting in the hot seat over here for about two hours wondering if I was going to be able to get through this thing. JOE POSNANSKI:
Hero's tears fill a city with pride

Everyone had come to see George Brett cry. It was Brettstock Sunday in Cooperstown, a festival of George, an open field crowded with Royals caps and powder blue jerseys and Brett streamers and Gates T-shirts and Buck O'Neil. The weather was Midwestern humid. Brotherly thoughts are poignant
It wasn't the part about his late father, the rigid disciplinarian who never passed along the praise that George Brett so strongly craved. And it wasn't the part about Charley Lau, his late mentor and batting coach whom Brett credits above everyone else for his illustrious baseball career.

George Brett spent his entire 21-year career with the Kansas City Royals tormenting American League pitchers. An intense competitor, the 13-time All-Star became the only player in history to amass more than 3,000 hits, 300 homers, 600 doubles, 100 triples and 200 stolen bases. His 3,154 hits are 13th most all-time. The only player to win batting titles in three decades (1976, 1980, 1990), he was the 1980 American League MVP when his remarkable .390 average was the highest since Ted Williams ' .406 mark in 1941. Now, since 1983, I'm always known as the Pine Tar Guy. Now what would you rather be known as?" - George Brett O n July 24, 1983 George Brett took center stage in one of baseball's most controversial incidents which has been dubbed the Pine Tar Game . This highly unusual incident involved George Brett of the Kansas City Royals, Billy Martin of the New York Yankees, a home run in Yankee Stadium, a bat with pine tar on the handle, and the umpires' interpretation of the rules. R ule 1.10(b) reads: the bat handle, for not more than 18 inches from the end, may be covered or treated with any material or substance to improve the grip. Any such material or substance, which extends past the 18-inch limitation, shall cause the bat to be removed from the game. Umpire Tim McClelland ruled that Brett's bat had "heavy pine tar" 19 to 20 inches from the tip of the handle and lighter pine tar for another three or four inches. T he circumstances which led to the ruling occurred after Brett hit a two-out two-run homer during the ninth inning off closer Goose Gossage which gave the Royals a 5-4 lead. After crossing home plate, Brett went into his dugout, sat on the bench, and watched as Yankees' manager Billy Martin approached home plate umpire Tim McClelland. The umpiring crew conferred at home plate and measured Brett's bat up against the front side of home plate. McClelland eventually signaled that Brett was out and the infuriated thirdbaseman rushed from the bench in an attempt to attack both McClelland and Martin.

George Brett was "The Franchise" for the Kansas City Royals during most of their first twenty-five years of existence. A line-drive hitting menace, he seriously challenged the coveted .400 batting mark in 1980, and collected more than 3,000 hits in his career. He was one of the greatest post-season performers in baseball history and the first Royal inducted into the Hall of Fame.
    Nicknames
Brett never earned a real popular nickname. His teammates called him "Mullet" early in his career. If you see any of his early baseball cards you'll see the unfortunate reason why.

George Brett's 1980 Season George Brett began the 1980 season innocently, hitting .255 as late as May 22. But from that day forward he hit a sizzling .427 and took the baseball world on an exciting ride in pursuit of the elusive .400 mark. Though he missed 37 games prior to the All-Star break due to injuries, Brett climbed up the batting charts. Not since Ted Williams in 1941 had anyone hit .400 for a season, but it became evident by August that Brett was intent on doing so. He hit .472 in June, an amazing .494 in July, and .430 in August. From July 18 to August 18 he hit in 30 consecutive games, a Royal record. His unbelievable success prompted his hitting mentor Charlie Lau to proclaim, "I feel like Dr. Frankenstein watching his monster on the loose." On August 17 Brett went 4-for-4 against the Blue Jays, running his hitting streak to 29 games. But more impressively he had boosted his average to .401. The next day he stroked three more hits and stood at .404. A little over a week later, a five-hit performance in Milwaukee raised his mark to .407 - the highest level he would reach. As the chase intensified, so too did the media crunch around Brett. Everywhere the team went Brett was the center of attention. In the Midwest "Brett For President" bumper stickers began to appear. The Royal star granted hundreds of interviews before he finally had to set up daily press conferences to handle the demand. "I just don't know how to handle all this media", Brett said, "In the clubhouse it's embarrassing. The guys must be getting tired of this."

    George Brett
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
George Howard Brett (born May 15 ) is a former American baseball player. He is one of the greatest third basemen in Major League Baseball history and the only man to ever win batting titles in three different decades. Brett, the youngest child of a sports-minded family which included his older brother Ken Brett , a major-league pitcher, was born on May 15 in Glen Dale, West Virginia . His family moved to the midwest and later to southern California when he was a boy, and Brett grew up hoping to follow in his brother's footsteps as a big-league baseball player. He was drafted by the fledgling Kansas City Royals in the second round of the baseball draft. Brett began his professional career as a shortstop , but had trouble going to his right defensively and was soon shifted to third base. As a third baseman, his powerful arm remained an asset, and he remained at that spot for 15 years. The Royals promoted him to the major leagues on August 2 He won the starting third-base job a year later, but struggled with the bat until he asked for help from Charlie Lau , the Royals' hitting instructor. Spending the 1974 All-Star break working together, Lau taught Brett how to protect the entire plate and cover up some holes in his swing that experienced big-league pitchers were taking advantage of. Armed with this knowledge, Brett developed rapidly as a hitter.
