Baseball needs more players like Bonds
By Matt Altomare
April 23, 2004 in Sports
Babe Ruth. Willie Mays. Barry Bonds. In any order, these are no doubt the three greatest baseball players ever. Yet while Mays and Ruth are legends both on and off the diamond, Barry Bonds has yet to be embraced similarly by baseball fans. Why is this, you ask? Most will say that it is because he is surly with the media and that the common fan can’t identify with Bonds. Some say that it is his flashy character, the low baggy pants, and the home run trot (or walk) that detract from his star power. Still others say that it is his relations with his teammates, in which he acts like he is above the team, leading fans away from Bonds. However, Barry Bonds is exactly the type of player that America should be falling in love with. American sports fans love the pure, raw athletic ability that defines Bonds. Who else can stand in the batter’s box and watch pitch after pitch go by outside of the strike zone for walk after walk, and then, on his fourth at-bat of the game, see one mistake by the pitcher and hit it out of the park? Former Yankee first baseman and future Hall of Famer Don Mattingly recently said, “He’s so patient. I don’t know how he can take so many pitches, and then when you throw him a strike, it’s over. It’s amazing.”

Swingin' in the reign A cloud of controversy continues to hang over Barry Bonds, but he just keeps on hitting By MICHAEL O'KEEFFE Barry Bonds has forced himself into conversations about the greatest sluggers of all-time discussions that used to be reserved for the likes of ... ... Willie Mays ... ... Babe Ruth ... ... and Hank Aaron. SAN FRANCISCO - A huge trophy commemorating Barry Bonds' 660th home run - the dinger he hit on April 12 to tie Willie Mays on the all-time list - sits in a locker in Bonds' corner of the Giants' clubhouse. It's a large wooden plaque with crossed bats, oversized in this understated, paneled room, just like Bonds, who overshadows everybody else in Major League Baseball this season, thanks to one of the most torrid starts in history. Bonds has posted mind-blowing numbers before, but this season he's playing on a different planet: Going into this weekend, the six-time MVP had blasted 10 homers and 21 RBI, and had recorded a .490 batting average, a 1.176 slugging percentage and a .701 on-base mark. The season is young and Bonds is bound to cool off, but the fear he strikes in the hearts of opponents will not. The Giants' slugger notched his 500th career intentional walk on Wednesday against the Braves, the most in Major League history. Hank Aaron, second on the list, trails far behind with 293. "Bonds is the best," Florida manager Jack McKeon said Thursday, after his Marlins beat the Giants 4-3 at SBC Park. "He's the only player who can single-handedly take over a game. He should be in another league. Is there another league for a guy like him?"

From: Curse of the Net Speaking of Google, Evan blogged from the SBC Park last tuesday and took this picture. I think it's neat that WiFi is available at the park and geeks tend to posse with other geeks, but the picture made me shake my head. Four laptops in a row, including the one Evan probably had in front of him while he took the picture, at a baseball park? Hmm. Maybe this was sort of a work thing. A WiFi-enabled stadium is a perfect place for flash P2P grid computing after all. Who needs expensive office spaces when your team can work at round-the-clock movie theathers and holding meetings at the lobby? When WiFi access at campsites become widely available, maybe we'll see startups working out of tents and RVs.

Barry Bonds out again with sinus infection
May 5, 2004 NEW YORK Barry Bonds was not in the San Francisco Giants' starting lineup again Wednesday night because of a sinus infection. ADVERTISEMENT It was the third straight game Bonds did not start, including the first two of a three-game series against the New York Mets. Jeffrey Hammonds started in left field for the Giants and batted cleanup. Bonds, who entered the day leading the majors in home runs (10) and batting average (.463), was still sniffling in the clubhouse before the game. "He felt worse today than he did yesterday," manager Felipe Alou said. "He went to see the doctor today. A bad cold, head cold." Alou said several Giants have felt sick recently. Bonds is making his only stop in New York this season, and his second straight absence was a big disappointment to another larger-than-usual crowd at Shea Stadium. Lee Farrugia stood in the front row during batting practice with his 7-year-old son, Carlo, who was flipping a baseball in and out of his glove. Farrugia said he bought tickets for this game the day they went on sale. Both he and his boy are Yankees fans, but they wanted to watch Bonds play.

MFORMA and Baseball Legend Barry Bonds Ink Exclusive Deal to Develop New Barry Bonds Baseball Game for Mobile Phones New home run hitting game hits the market as baseball season heats up SANTA MONICA, Calif. - May 3, 2004 - MFORMA Group Inc., a leading global publisher of wireless entertainment, has acquired exclusive rights from Barry Bonds to build an arcade-style video game based on his name and likeness for wireless phones. Six-time MVP and current home run leader, Barry Bonds is entering his 18th season as a major leaguer. He is one of the most popular baseball heroes the game has ever seen and will forever be associated with one of baseball's most exciting moments-the home run. The new MFORMA game, called Barry Bonds: Home Run History , is a home run hitting game where players take the role of Barry Bonds and attempt to beat the home run records of baseball greats of the past. The exclusivity of the agreement between Barry Bonds and MFORMA is such that the new game will be the one and only video game featuring Barry Bonds available in any format. "Barry Bonds is a superb athlete and a baseball legend in his own time," said Scott Jensen, MFORMA's VP of media and licensing. "We are very pleased and excited to be working with him to develop some great wireless entertainment that we know will delight fans everywhere. Barry Bonds' brand is so powerful, and especially now, at the opening of baseball season 2004 when Barry will be closing in on breaking the all time home run record, this game will generate a lot of excitement and interest. Fans will be able to take the excitement of watching a Barry Bonds homer sail out of the park with them anywhere."

Bonds named in American drug inquiry
Allegations could damage baseball's standing with American sporting public for years to come
Lawrence Donegan in San Francisco
Wednesday March 3, 2004
The Guardian

The sport of baseball was pitched into its biggest scandal of the modern era yesterday when it was reported that Barry Bonds, currently the best player in the world, had received performance-enhancing drugs from Balco, the San Francisco-based laboratory alleged to have supplied the designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) to the British sprinter Dwain Chambers. After months of speculation about the involvement of prominent baseball figures in the burgeoning Balco scandal the San Francisco Chronicle published the names of six players alleged to have been supplied with drugs from the laboratory, including Bonds, who holds some of the most prestigious batting records.

Notebooks Baseball: Barry, Reggie ... but Marcus Thames? Sunday, August 18, 2002 At 12:24 a.m. Aug. 10 (or 9:24 p.m. Aug. 9 if you're reading this three hours before it's written in San Francisco), Barry Bonds hit home run No. 600 off the Pirates' Kip Wells . A 2-1 slider in the sixth inning that sailed 421 feet over the center-field wall at Pacific Bell Park and into the game's long book of keepsakes. At approximately 12:26:30 a.m., the 41,897 fans on hand (less "lucky" fan Jay Arsenault and the half-ton of human greed lying on top of him), called Bonds out of the Giants' dugout for a curtain call. And rightly so. This was history. This was theater. This was a man summoned to Olympus, to Valhalla, to backstage at a Springsteen concert. This was a moment not seen in 31 years. And only twice before that. This is one of the ways we've come to acknowledge greatness of artistry in America. This, and shelling out $999.98 on the Home Shopping Network for a limited edition autographed bat.

Who Do You Agree With? Share Your Thoughts NO By John Fedko Barry Bonds is the best player of his generation. Of that, there is no slightest doubt. But best ever? No. The greatest, most dominant athlete of all time was Babe Ruth. When Ruth hit 60 homers in a season in the 20s, 10 home runs in one year was considered fabulous. Ruth stood so head and shoulders above his peers, his peers couldn't come up to his kneecaps in comparison. Bonds stats are awesome, but they come on the heel of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa slugging record amounts of homers, and pitchers giving up a record amount of long-balls.

High Security Bonds
Forget about the 'aughts. Who do you figure as the best player of the 1990s? (Some people think 2000 is part of the nineties-I think those people have too much time on their hands.) Who would it be? Ken Griffey ? All those homers. Frank Thomas ? No, marred by two off-seasons in a row. Greg Maddux ? An amazing run, especially for a pitcher-where volatility is usually the order of the day. Leave us to face it, kiddies, there's only one answer-and I've already given it away in the title. The answer, as conservative investors have known for decades, is Bonds. Barry Bonds We are not here to toss out counting stats as if they can be simplistically compared. The operating standard here is consistency, and no one has come close to Barry Bonds for year-in, year-out consistent excellence. His ten-year performance level ranks in the top ten all-time, joining names such as Babe Ruth Ty Cobb Honus Wagner Lou Gehrig ... Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle We are here, actually, to provide some interesting and unusual career snapshots based on the game-by-game logs we're fortunate enough to have on hand for Mr. Bonds (or "BB," as the Mini Maestro likes to call him).

He was 3 for 3 with a walk against Oswalt, and the three hits included his 659th HR. So, after one game, he has a 1.000 BA, a 1.000 OBA, and a 2.667 slugging percentage. New York, NY Home of three teams for more than a half a century, Polo Grounds was one of baseballs hallowed ballparks. Prior to the construction of Polo Grounds which stood from 1911 until 1964, there were several other ballparks known as Polo Grounds that the New York Giants played in. The original Polo Grounds was located near Central Park where polo was played. The owner of the Metropolitans, John Day moved his team here to play baseball in 1883. The team played here for five years until the city evicted the team after the 1888 season. By 1889, Day moved his team to Coogan's Bluff, where two ballparks were located. The New York Giants of the Players League played at the northern ballpark, Brotherhood Park; and the New York Giants of the National League played at the southern ballpark, which they named Polo Grounds. The Giants of the Players League went bankrupt after the season and the Giants (NL) moved into Brotherhood Park for the 1891 season. The Giants then renamed the ballpark Polo Grounds. The third Polo Grounds consisted of 16,000 wooden seats, with some bleachers in the outfield. Unfortunately, on April 14, 1911 the entire wooden structure burned to the ground.
