Sportswriters snubbed him in favor of Ken Griffey Jr., as the Player of the 1990s, but that had more to do with image than talent. Barry Lamar Bonds was the best player of the decade, and entering the new century he was still the best player in the game, blasting an amazing 73 homers in 2001. His combination of power and speed have been matched only by his godfather, Willie Mays.
In 2001 Bonds broke two of the oldest of Babe Ruth's records - most walks and highest slugging percentage in a season. In 2002, Bonds eclipsed Ted Williams' single-season OBP record, as he reached base an amazing 58.3% of the time. Bonds also broke his own mark for walks, tallying 198 on the season. Most incredibly, Bonds continued to improve as a hitter, winning his first batting title with a .370 average in Pac Bell Park, a tough hitting environment.
Carrying the Giants to the 2002 World Series, Bonds finally filled the one void he'd had in his career. He helped erase the memory of his previous poor post-season performances when he homered in his first Fall Classic at-bat. He launched four homers in the Series and hit .471, but the Giants lost to the Angels in Game Seven.

Legal battle enters extra innings
After an auction fetches $450,000 for Barry Bonds' homerun ball to be split by two fans vying for it in court, one now faces another legal battle with his own lawyer. With the proceeds netting less than half of the ball's estimated $1 million value, attorney for plaintiff Alex Popov obtained a temporary injunction to freeze his former client's $225,000 share of the profits to go towards a $473,530.32 legal bill.

    'Million-dollar' ball worth $450,000
Two baseball seasons, one fierce legal battle and hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees after Barry Bonds' record-setting 73rd home run in 2001, the baseball has finally landed in the hands of a single undisputed owner: Comic book creator and producer Todd McFarlane, who paid $450,000 in an auction that closed Wednesday.

Other comments about Barry I can't beleive what Barry Bonds said about the Jewish yesterday after the home run derby! I used to be his no.1 fan, but now i absolutely hate him! -Pat Sommers Bonds is the best player in baseball. The Giants are fortunate that the Pirates were too broke to keep him. -Ed Eagle Hey Jason,
How about April 96. Barry could be headed for a year to remember, and he could lock himself into the hall with a fourth MVP. -David Patterson If it hadn't been for the Terry Pendleton sympathy vote, Barry would already be the ONLY player in big league history with four MVPs! As it stands, we'll have to wait for him to have a huge year for him to get #4. He's become kinda like Tony Gwynn, in that people hold him to certain expectations, thereby limiting his consideration for MVP. His average year would be enough to garner the trophy for, say Moises Alou, but NOT for Mr. Bonds. Happily, Barry says that he intends to play "9 or 10 more years." If he does, we can be certain that he'll approach some lofty ground - 500 homers, 500 SBs, 3,000 hits and, possibly, 2,000 RBI! I believe that as long as he stays healthy, none of this is out of his reach.

COURT TV.COM Case background Owning a piece of history SAN FRANCISCO (Court TV) Two fans clashing over Barry Bonds' historic 73rd home run baseball made their opening pitches in court Thursday after four attempts at settlement failed. "Return safety and enjoyment to America's pastime, your honor," said Martin Triano, lawyer for Alex Popov, who first got a glove on the Oct. 7, 2001, home run ball. "Return this piece of baseball history to its rightful owner: Alex Popov." Popov claims that he caught the ball, but was then overwhelmed in a crush of fans, including Patrick Hayashi, who eventually came away with the ball. It has since been valued at more than $1 million. "Patrick Hayashi committed no wrongful act and his luck was impeccable," said Michael Lee, Hayashi's lawyer. "He was just in the right place at the right time."

COURT TV.COM Case background Owning a piece of history SAN FRANCISCO (Court TV) Barry Bonds' record-setting 73rd home run disappeared into a mass of fans in the right field stands of Pacific Bell park on October 7, 2001. But was it nestled in the glove of one man or free on the ground for another to grab? That's the question behind the trial pitting Alex Popov, who rose above the crowd that day and got a glove on the ball, against Patrick Hayashi, who claims he plucked the prized souvenir from the ground. On Friday, Popov's second witness, Contra Costa, California, dentist Douglas Yarris, told the judge deciding the case that he landed near Popov at the center of the scrum that ensued over the ball. Yarris, 44, brought his son, Travis, then 13, to the season-ending game. Like Popov, the dentist positioned himself on the walkway behind right field where Bonds was most likely to hit one out. When Bonds connected with Dodgers' pitcher Dennis Springer's pitch in the first inning, Yarris thought he had a chance to grab a piece of baseball history.

barry bonds is the best left fielder Major League baseball has ever seen. What makes barry bonds such a special baseball player?
    http://mama.essortment.com/barrybondsbiog_rxes.htm
    Barry Bonds: biography
Barry Bonds is the best left fielder Major League Baseball has ever seen. Here is a short biography of his life and baseball career.
Until recently, the best left fielder to ever grace Major League Baseball was Ted Williams - one of the best hitters of all time. But not even the great Ted Williams is as good an overall player as the San Francisco Giants' left fielder Barry Bonds. Bonds has won baseball's MVP award three times, and finished 2nd only to the Atlanta Braves' Terry Pendleton in yet another year. What makes Barry Bonds such a special baseball player? It's simple - he beats you in every aspect of the game. Let's break it down. bodyOffer(22674) HITTING - Bonds is a lifetime .300 hitter, which is certainly a good average. Left fielders Ted Williams and Stan Musial had higher lifetime averages, but there's more to the story. First of all, Bonds rarely gets a pitch to hit. Bonds has typically been on teams without much support around him, meaning that teams are willing to pitch around him to take their chances with other batters. The result is that Bonds gets fewer good pitches to hit. Neverthless, Bonds has managed to hit 490 Home Runs as of September 2000, and should hit the 500 milestone by the end of the year. By the time Bonds retires, he will probably trail only Hank Aaron and his godfather, Wilie Mays, in career home runs. Bonds has one of the quickest bats in the big leagues, and he has used it to accumulate some of the greatest hitting statistics of all time.

'Steroids, Steroids,' The Hateful Chorus Chants by Burton S. Blumert
Memo to Editor Rockwell and other baseball fans: Let me shift your attention for a moment from the Red Sox vs. the Yankees, the finest teams money can buy, to the Left Coast and the incomparable Barry Bonds. Let me bring you up to date. For the first 20 games of the 2004 Season Bonds:
    • Leads the league in batting: .500 Leads the league in HR: 9 Leads the league in Bases on Balls: 30 (this statistic is ominous)
These astonishing numbers are consistent with Barry’s shattering of records the past three seasons. Here are those highlights:
    • In 2001 Bonds hit 73 Home Runs (a record that will NEVER be broken) He won the League’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) In 2002 Barry won the Batting Title by hitting a glittering .370 During the World Series, he batted .471, hit 4 HR and was walked 13 times.

Barry Bonds: The Baseball Superstar the Media Love To Hate
by Burton S. Blumert When a prominent athlete hits the front page these days, it’s usually a sordid tale involving murder and mayhem. One athlete savagely dismembers his wife, another sullen footballer hires an amoral thug to murder a pregnant girlfriend, and on Super Bowl weekend in Atlanta, an NFL poster boy takes part in a bloody confrontation that leaves two dead. It was very different when the San Francisco Chronicle featured baseball star Barry Bonds on their front page on June 1, 2001. But the only violence in this story was Barry Bonds bruising baseballs during his record-breaking barrage of home runs in the month of May. Bonds, in his sixteenth year in the major leagues as a superstar, was never identified as a home run slugger in the mold of the great Babe or modern bashers like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. In his early years, Bonds was a lithe figure, emphasizing speed and defensive skills. When Bonds struck his 500 th career home run earlier this season, the baseball establishment seemed surprised. How had this interloper entered the legendary domain inhabited by only seventeen baseball immortals? The event was well covered by the media, but Bonds membership in the exclusive 500-career home run club seemed more honorary than earned.
