National Collegiate Catcher of the Year The most demanding and dangerous position on a baseball field is the one designated as "number 2" on a scorecard - the catcher. Since baseball's earliest days, players in this position have endured daily pain and suffered more injuries. The role of catcher has evolved into a strategic part of the baseball game. Therefore, it is only fitting that the baseball community nationally recognizes the top collegiate catcher.
The Johnny Bench National Collegiate Catcher of the Year established in 2000 is given to the top collegiate catcher based upon ability, sportsmanship, team leadership and character. [See SELECTION PROCESS below.]

JOHNNY BENCH Baseball Hall-of-Famer Johnny Bench was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 7, 1947. The third of four children of Ted and Katy Bench, he was All-State in basketball and baseball at Binger High School and the Valedictorian of his graduating class. Johnny's childhood dream was to become a major league baseball player and his father counseled that the position of catcher was the most direct route to that goal. Taking that advice, he was selected in the 1965 amateur draft by the Cincinnati Reds and signed with them. After two seasons in the minors, Bench made Cincinnati's Major League roster for the 1968 season. This marked the beginning of one of the most successful careers in baseball history and to Johnny's ascension as a celebrity. He maintains a sense of balance by using his celebrity status to aid worthy causes, such as the Heart Association, the American Cancer Society (as National Chairman of "Athletes vs. Cancer"), the Kidney Foundation, Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Health System and Muscular Dystrophy. He also supports the Cincinnati Symphony, the Museum of Science and Industry, and his own Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund, which grants financial aid to Greater Cincinnati-area college students. Bench has enjoyed maximum national visibility through his thousands of hours of entertainment experiences and personal appearance of the Bob Hope Christmas Shows in the Far East has sung with the Cincinnati Pops, authored books including Baseball For Idiots, and hosted a wide range of television programs, from his Emmy Award-winning instructional show The Baseball Bunch, a 1984 PBS special Billy Sunday, and various baseball oriented programs. The year 2000 marks Johnny's 27th anniversary as spokesperson for Fifth Third Bank based in Cincinnati. He has appeared in hundreds of advertising campaigns promoting the banks' products and services as well as teaming up to support a variety of community events.

Ted Williams has signed many autographs but none as prescient as one penned in spring training in 1969: "To Johnny Bench, a sure Hall of Famer." Johnny was named to the NL All-Star team fourteen times, played in every game from 1968 to 1975, and hit .409 with 3 home runs. He set a major league record for home runs by a catcher (327 plus 62 playing elsewhere), later broken by Carlton Fisk; won two home run crowns; led the league in RBI three times; and was chosen MVP twice. While Johnny is remembered most for his offense, he may have had his greatest impact behind the bat. He was the first receiver to use a protective helmet in the field, popularized catching onehanded, kept his throwing hand behind his back to protect it from foul tips, and said his father "taught me to throw 254 feet-twice the distance to second base-from a crouch." Not known for keeping his counsel, Johnny once said flatly, "I can throw out any runner alive," and brashly predicted that he would be the first catcher to be named Rookie of the Year. He did just that in 1968, caught 154 games, a rookie record, and won the first of ten straight Gold Gloves. Johnny hit 45 homers and was chosen MVP for the first time in 1970, the year Bob Hunter, a Los Angeles sportswriter, first called Cincinnati "the Big Red Machine."

Johnny Bench
Johnny Lee Bench (born December 7 ), is a former professional baseball player. Born in Oklahoma City Oklahoma United States , he grew up to become a professional baseball player who spent his entire 17 season major league career with the Cincinnati Reds , and was a key part of the dominating " Big Red Machine " of the early . Some consider him to be the best catcher ever to play the game. Coming up with the Reds' organistion, his promise was immediately apparent, winning him the NL Rookie of the Year . Whilst possibly not as great a threat on offense as some (such as Roy Campanella or Yogi Berra ), Bench was a solid power hitter, and his great defensive skill won him 10 Gold Gloves as well as the NL MVP award in and again in , helping the Reds to the World Series title on both occasions, He also hit 389 career home runs, and held the record for most home runs by a catcher (a record since broken by Carlton Fisk). He was elected to the United States Baseball Hall of Fame in , appearing on 96% of the ballots.

Baseball's greatest catcher
By Nick Acocella
Special to ESPN.com
"I remember I said to Red Smith, 'I've seen Campy and Berra, this fellow's better than that. And Red said to me, 'I've seen Dickey and Mickey Cochrane, and this fellow is better than them also. Ergo, Johnny Bench is the best catcher who ever lived," says writer Roger Kahn on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Often cited as the best catcher in baseball history, Johnny Bench led the Reds to two Series titles. Johnny Bench was a vital cog as the Cincinnati Reds won six division titles, four pennants and two World Series in the 1970s. Although more attention was paid to his power hitting, just as significant is that he won 10 Gold Gloves in his first 10 full seasons. Selected for 14 All-Star teams, Bench was a lifetime .267 hitter with 389 homers as he set a major league record for home runs by a catcher with 327. (Carlton Fisk and Mike Piazza have since passed this mark.) He is the only catcher to ever lead his league in total bases, when he accumulated 315 in 1974. The righthanded-hitting slugger topped the National League in homers twice, with a career-high 45 in 1970 and 40 in 1972, winning the MVP award both years. He led the league in runs batted in three times (with 148 in 1970, 125 in 1972 and 129 in 1974).

40. The Baseball Guru - Spotlight On Pete Rose Comparison

http://baseballguru.com/bbspot2.html
Player Spotlight Craig Tomarkin The following comparison of Pete Rose to his long-time teammates: Bench, Morgan, Foster and Perez, shows that he was not in the top 3 players on his own team (and we're not even including the pitchers on his team such as Tom Seaver). To illustrate the point, batting records of their best single season, top 5 seasons, top 10 seasons and careers were compared. Their seasons were sorted by the following criteria to determine which is their "best." And, with exception of the "career" totals, no season with fewer than 400 plate appearances was included. The players were sorted by OPS (on base avg + slugging avg) and by Total Avg (TA=batting avg + slugging avg). Then, the rankings were averaged to determine the total combined ranking. After studying the table below, also consider the intangibles. While I don't consider Pete Rose a superior fielder, to his credit, he won 2 Gold Gloves as an outfielder. His teammates winning Gold Gloves, Bench who won 10 and Morgan who won 5, are in the Hall of Fame, Foster and Perez didn't win any and are not. As far as base running, if you use stolen bases as a measure, Rose was adequate, but not superior. To me, while he was fun to watch (I admit I was a big Reds fan) and longevity is a big factor, by most fundamental and widely accepted statistical measures, he just wasn't as obvious a choice for the Hall of Fame as some make it seem. Sorry Pete!
