No one can predict the future, but it seemed Johnny Bench was destined for greatness. He won all-state honors in baseball as a high school player and in his first full season (1968) he earned National League Rookie of the Year honors. As one of the leaders of the "Big Red Machine" teams of the 1970s, Bench was an outstanding, durable, defensive catcher and won 10 consecutive Gold Gloves. He was equally impressive with a bat, belting 389 home runs. A complete player, Bench earned two MVP awards.

Career Batting Record Considered by many the greatest catcher in history because of his combination of defensive skill, offensive power, and durability, Bench was one of the leaders of Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" that won six Eastern Division titles, four NL pennants, and two world championships during the 1970s. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound Bench joined the Reds late in the 1967 season and became a starter in 1968, when he set records for a catcher by playing in 154 games and hitting 40 doubles. He was named the league's rookie of the year. He won his first most valuable player award in 1972. Bench's league-leading 45 home runs and 148 RBI helped the Reds to the division title. He came close to duplicating those numbers in 1974, again leading the league with 40 home runs and 125 RBI to win another MVP award as the Reds won another division title. They won the pennant both seasons but lost twice to the Oakland Athletics in the World Series. In 1974, Bench led the league in RBI for the third time, with 129. The Reds finally won the World Series in 1975 and they repeated the following year. Bench's offensive numbers weren't nearly as spectacular in those seasons, but he was still clearly the best catcher in the league. In 1977, he was named the All-Star starter for the tenth consecutive year.

11. JOHNNY BENCH
In 1989, the first year he was eligible, the baseball Writers Associationof America voted johnny bench into the baseball Hall of Fame.
http://www.ok-history.mus.ok.us/enc/bench.htm
BENCH, JOHNNY LEE (1947-). Johnny Bench had a remarkable baseball career that can be measured by the opening line on his hall-of-fame plaque, "Johnny Bench redefined standards by which catchers are measured during his seventeen seasons with 'Big Red machine'." Bench, born on December 7, 1947, in Oklahoma City, grew up in Binger, Oklahoma. He excelled in athletics, achieving All-State honors in basketball and baseball for Binger High School. Idolizing another Oklahoma baseball legend, Mickey Mantle, Bench would later receive the same admiration from a new generation of Oklahoma baseball fans.
In 1965 the Cincinnati Reds drafted Bench, and at spring training Ted Williams autographed his baseball, "to a hall-of-famer for sure." In 1968, proving Williams prophetic, Bench became the first catcher to win the National League Rookie of the Year award. Playing his entire career with the Cincinnati Reds, Bench batted .267 and belted 389 home runs. The Reds, dubbed the "Big Red Machine" in the 1970s, won two World Series, four National League pennants, and six divisional titles. Bench made the NL All-Star team fourteen times, led the league in runs batted in three times, and received the Most Valuable Player award twice. In 1970 Bench was the youngest player ever named MVP.
Bench had exceptional defensive skills also. He won ten straight gold gloves and was one of the best at throwing out base-stealers. He became the first catcher to wear a protective helmet in the field, and he caught with one hand behind his back to protect it from foul tips. In the 1976 world series Bench hit .533, had two home runs, drove in six runs, and threw out the only attempted base-stealer to win the series MVP. In 1989, the first year he was eligible, the Baseball Writers Association of America voted Johnny Bench into the Baseball Hall of Fame. After baseball Bench started a broadcast career, among other projects.

by The Idea Logical Company, Inc. Submissions Johnny Bench: A Revolutionary Player by Mark Little I became a Cincinnati Reds fan for one reason and one reason only: Johnny Bench . By all rights I should have bled Dodger blue ... this was a term Tommy Lasorda used all the time. "If you cut me, I'll bleed Dodger blue," he used to say, meaning he was totally loyal to the Dodgers. I grew up in Bakersfield, California. The Dodgers were the closest team to the area and we even had a Dodger farm club. Almost everybody bled Dodger blue. As far as baseball fans in the area were concerned the worst team you could root for were those Reds from Cincinnati. This was the 1970's and the Reds and Dodgers were the biggest rivalry in baseball. They battled it out for first place in the West almost every year. Between the two teams they won 9 of 10 Western division titles in the 70's. I played my first year of Little League in 1971 and decided I needed a favorite team. I didn't want to do the obvious thing and pick the team I lived closest to ... this was going to take some thought. I happened to see some highlights of 1970
