You'll Have A Ball (and Bat) in Otsego County
By PAUL QUIRINI Staff Writer
After returning from a trip to Otsego County last week, with an itinerary that included stops in Cherry Valley, Cooperstown and Oneonta, I realized one fundamental thing: I could live there. Having driven Interstate 88 on several recent journeys to Otsego County (and points beyond) in recent weeks, I opted to head down Route 20 this time. You can tell the difference between Western Avenue in Albany and Route 20 when you're going west: less traffic, the rising sun behind you, and the increasing amount of farmland around you. Cherry Valley My first destination was Cherry Valley, a tiny village so named by an early settler, Rev. Samuel Dunlop, for its abundance of cherry trees. From Albany, the trip took about an hour-and-a-quarter but didn't seem nearly that long because of the scenic beauty to admire as I drove. Most businesses didn't seem to open until 10 a.m., so I walked around town for a little while and learned about its history. At the traffic light, for example, is a Civil War monument erected in 1868 in memory of local men "who died that their country might live," as an inscription reads. Such men as Cornelius Hardendorf, of the 152nd New York Infantry; Sgt. William O. McLean, U.S. sharpshooter, and Charles D. McLean, 1st Regiment; and Charles P. Nicholls, of the U.S. Navy, are listed on the memorial, atop which sits an eagle.

The Fight for Sunday Baseball in Philadelphia
by Bob Warrington
Introduction
The City of Philadelphia’s first legal baseball game between major league teams on a Sunday occurred on April 8, 1934. The hometown exhibition game between the Athletics and Phillies took place at Shibe Park, and 15,000 saw the Phillies win 8-1. George M. Mawhinney of The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that, in spite of his team’s defeat, “the day, the crowd, the gate, the game and the law that last fall legalized Sunday sports were all declared a most signal success by no less a personage than the lank Cornelius McGillicuddy.” Connie Mack was a vigorous and long-time proponent of Sunday baseball, and this 1934 game was the culmination of many years of campaigning by the Athletics to legalize baseball on the Sabbath in Philadelphia. But, it was a hard-won victory filled with many difficulties, frustrations and disappointments for supporters of Sunday baseball.
The Blue Laws and Baseball
The origins of the fight for Sunday baseball go back to 1794 when legislators in the Pennsylvania Assembly passed “an Act for the prevention of vice and immorality, and of unlawful gaming, and to restrain disorderly sports and dissipation” on the Lord’s Day. Popularly known as the “Sunday Blue Laws,” this Act and even more restrictive laws passed in the 19th century had a powerful influence on Pennsylvanians well into the 20th century. Yet, dramatic changes were underway in American Society during the later decades of the 19th century, the pace of which accelerated as a new century dawned. Urbanization, industrialization and immigration brought a profound—albeit gradual—relaxation in the strict adherence to the Blue Laws. A new Sabbath concept that allowed recreation and games was reflected in the fact that Sunday professional baseball became increasingly common throughout the country as the 20th century progressed.

Your mind is suddenly aware of this communication which shifts from moment to moment. For starters there was a new guard at the Pearly Gates. He kept insisting that there was no Connie Mack there. The doors swung open (without any heavenly choir to welcome me) and I was on my way. Walking through Heaven is unbelievable. The clouds follow you like silent sentinels. They hover around you guiding you to your destination. Although generally white most of them have a light blue aura tinged with a bit of cream. Always there is a sense of contentment over everything. Always you feel a shifting of time and space. Sitting outside his house, sipping a cup of tea, wearing a tan straw hat, suspenders planted against an immaculate light blue shirt with a stiff button down collar and a blue bowtie complimenting his outfit, he noticed me and waved me over. Please sit down and join us.

Buck Leonard remembers a game against Leon Day and the Newark Eagles in which the Grays were behind, 2-1. When a runner got on first, Leonard sacrificed him to second, one of the few times the hard-hitting Leonard ever bunted. Josh could tie the game with a single, so Day bore down on him. He got two strikes past Josh and prepared to set him up for a third. Again, Josh was the kind of hitter, as his teammates insist to this day, who never worried about two strikes on him. He didn't shorten up or widen his stance. He believed he could hit anything in any situation, and simply had the confidence he would. Day wound up and threw a tough two-strike pitch, a fast curveball on the outside of the plate, and Josh nailed it over the scoreboard in center field. It was a blast which not only broke up the ball game but which had people slapping their foreheads in disbelief. "He was that kind of power hitter," Leonard said. "Nobody knows how far that ball went that day." Or the time Jack Marshall saw him commit himself too soon and almost strike out on a sucker pitch. Almost. For as Marshall remembers it, Sonny Cornelius was pitching for the American Giants against the Grays at Victory Field in Indianapolis, Indiana. Cornelius threw Josh a good slow curve and fooled him completely. Josh took his short stride, shifted his weight as much as he ever did, and began his swing. He brought his left arm across his body, but halted the motion at the sight of Cornelius's tantalizing slow curve, let go of the bat with his left hand, and with only his right hand gripping the handle, swatted at the ball as if he were going after a horsefly. The drive carried 375 feet and out of the park. Josh circled the bases, unable to contain a smile; Sonny Cornelius shook his head.

In that year's World Series they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals four games to two, to claim their second consecutive world championship. Al Simmons and Jimmie Foxx were among the league's best hitters, but the team's greatest star was Grove. In a year in which all circumstances conspired to favor the hitter - the ball may have been livened to enhance the game's appeal in the face of the Depression - Grove was sensational, winning twenty-eight games with an earned run average more than two runs lower than that of the league. The Athletics went on to win a third consecutive pennant in 1931, but as the Depression deepened and attendance continued to sink, Mack deemed it necessary to begin peddling his stars; by 1935 the club had settled at the bottom of the league.
