Richie Ashburn Posters
Here are Richie Ashburn posters and photos now being auctioned off at eBay . This is about the best place we've found for getting the poster you want at the right price. If there are no listings above, it could be that nobody is selling them right now, but it could also be a bug in the search. You may want to click over and search for his name, and/or number 1, and/or for the Phillies. If you still can't find the Richie Ashburn poster you're looking for, you could ask in the Philadelphia Phillies discussion forum if anybody else knows who sells them. By the way, if you're looking to sell a Richie Ashburn poster , good old eBay is probably still your best bet. Thanks to eBay's extremely active sports memorabilia auctions, it's easy for anyone to auction off their baseball posters, photos, and other collectibles without a dealer getting in the middle and taking 50%. Click here for eBay , or eBay Canada , if that's where you're located. Sincerely

Ht Wt B T : R YRS G AB R H HR RBI SB BA The leader of the 1950 Whiz Kids, Richie Ashburn was considered one of baseball's greatest leadoff hitters. From 1948 to 1959, he was at the top of the order for the Phillies. He finished his career with a .308 average, fueled by nine seasons in wich he hit .300 or better. In 15 years, he collected 2,574 hits and was the league batting champ in 1955 (.338) and 1958 (.350). He led the league in hits three times with a career high of 221 in 1951. His career included stops with the Phillies (1948-59), Cubs (1960-61) and Mets (1962). As a defensive player, he established baseball records for leading the league nine times in chances, four seasons of 500 or more putouts and nine seasons of 400 or more putouts. His defensive skills rose to the top in the final game of the 1950 season. Ashburn grabbed a single from the Dodgers' Duke Snider and threw out Cal Abrams at home. Had the run scored, the Phillies would have faced a playoff for the pennant. Instead, Dick Sisler hit a home-run in the 10th to break the tie and give the Phillies the win. Ashburn batted .333 in his first season and hit .306 in his final season. In 1995, he was elected to the Hall of Fame by the Committee on Baseball Veterans.

A Tribute To Richie Ashburn © Erick Emert 1997 The last game of the 1950 season saw the Phillies and Dodgers tied for first place. The schedule had them playing their last game against each other in Ebbots Field. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Dodgers had runners on first and second with no outs when Duke Snider lined a single to center off Robin Roberts. In center field, Ashburn was looking for a bunt and was playing in close, backing up a potential play at second. He fielded the ball and his throw was perfect. Catcher Stan Lopata applied the tag, and Cal Abrams was out by at least 15 feet. In the 10 th , Dick Sisler won the game for the Phillies with a three run-run homer. Richie Ashburn made it to the Hall of Fame in 1995. I’m glad he made it before he died because he deserved it. He waited 33 years to hear that call. He was a humble man in a lot of ways. This was his reaction to being selected: " It's pretty awesome in there. So I know what it means to be in there. Believe me. But for some reason, I think it's going to mean a lot more when I'm dead than when I'm alive. Because it's forever. You're immortalized. I don't feel immortal right now. I feel very mortal, really. But the neat thing is that it will be there forever, and that's kind of how I look at it ."

After 30 years of playing at Veterans Stadium, the Philadelphia Phillies began a new chapter in there history in April 2004 with the opening of Citizens Bank Park. Just as more than a dozen other MLB teams have done since 1991, the Phillies wanted a new ballpark built to replace perhaps the worst stadium in the second half of the 20th century, Veterans Stadium. At the four corners of the site, landscaped entrance plazas open the park to the street. Each of these plazas has a distinct character and focus.

    Richie Ashburn
    By Scott Farmelant
Background: Mike Schmidt can whine all he wants about being underappreciated. But Schmitty's walking into the Hall of Fame on his first try. Richie Ashburn, on the other hand, enters after a 28-year wait. Ashburn, 68, was the Phillies' center fielder from 1948-60, and has been the team's broadcaster for the past 32 years. A lead-off batter, "Putt Putt" Ashburn won two National league batting titles and twice finished second behind Stan "The Man" Musial. Ashburn got on base during his career more than Pete Rose, Willie Mays, and Duke Snider. He once fouled off 14 pitches in a row before walking. Even with a mediocre arm, Ashburn was considered one of the game's finest glovesmen ever. Ashburn was the 1948 Rookie of the Year, the only rookie ever to start an All-Star game in center field. Ashburn's #1 hangs in the Vet, a testament to a great career. What it's like going into the Hall of Fame where the Babe, Ty Cobb, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, all of the greats, are enshrined? I don't know what it's going to be like because I've never been there before. They say I won't know how it's going to be until I get up there. So I don't know how it's going to be.

Richie Ashburn in the news Don Richard Ashburn , American professional baseball player, was born on March 19 in Tilden, Nebraska . From his youth on a farm, he grew up to become a professional baseball outfielder and veteran broadcaster for the Philadelphia Phillies , and one of the most beloved sports figures in Philadelphia history. Ashburn spent 12 of his 15 major league seasons as the Phillies' center fielder (from 1948 through 1959), during which he led the National League twice in batting average and routinely led the league in fielding. Upon his retirement from playing in 1962, he became a radio/TV announcer for the Phillies, where he was paired for 27 seasons with legendary broadcaster Harry Kalas . Ashburn also regularly wrote for the Philadelphia Bulletin and, later, the Philadelphia Daily News. In 1995 Ashburn was elected to the United States Baseball Hall of Fame by the Hall's Veteran's Committee, and was inducted with Phillies great Mike Schmidt . Over 25,000 fans, mostly from Philadelphia, traveled to Cooperstown for the ceremony.

by George F. Will Guiltlessness. Our fat fifties cars, how we loved them, revved them; no thought of pollution. Exhaust smoke, cigarette smoke, factory smoke, all romance. Romance of consumption at its height.
"When Everyone Was Pregnant" George F. Will. Photo Credit: George Will But big muscular Buicks and other fat fifties cars (for which Ike launched the biggest public works program ever, the Interstate Highway System) were not the best symbol of an American decade of pent-up energy busting loose. Remember Ted Kluszewski's biceps, those huge ham hocks erupting from the then sleeveless uniform jerseys of the Cincinnati Reds? (Or, as that team was called for a while in that Cold War decade, the Redlegs.) Baseball in the fifties carried a big stick. Even shortstops, who once upon a time had been considered inoffensive little guys, got into the act: The Cubs' Ernie Banks won two consecutive MVP awards for seasons (1958, 1959) in which he hit a total of 92 home runs. The Baseball Encyclopedia says Kluszewski was 6'2" and 225 pounds. That was mighty big then, but no more. Arguably the most striking change in baseball in the four decades since then is the sheer scale of the players. In 1953 the Indians' Al Rosen had a monster season: .336, 43 home runs, 145 RBIs. He missed a triple crown by .001, to the Senators' Mickey Vernon. Rosen was considered a "burly slugger." He was 5'101/2" and 180 pounds. Baseball is still, as Bill Veeck said, a game unlike others because to play it you do not need to be either seven feet tall or seven feet wide. But by 1987 Nolan Ryan (6'2", 210 pounds) was smaller than five other teammates on the Astros' pitching staff.
