Summer 1999
'An arena I feel comfortable in'
Jim Abbott returns to baseball Was he really back? He needed the test of a full season in the majors, and the Milwaukee Brewers have given him a chance to prove himself in the 1999 season. Joel Seguine of U-M News and Information Services interviewed Jim Abbott for Michigan Today in the locker room of the Brewers' spring training facility in Phoenix. Since the start of the season, it's been rocky going for Abbott. Through June 14 his record was 1-5, giving up 72 earned runs per nine innings (ERA), while both starting and relieving for the last-place Brewers. For his career Abbott was, as of June14, 86-105 with a 4.2 ERA. Highlights of Abbott's career Q: Michigan Today. You had such a wonderful amateur career. What are some of the memories you hold onto from those years?
Jim Abbott: That I had a lot of great friendships is mostly what I remember from baseball. It's part of the reason why I'm playing again; it expands the world you're exposed to and the people you come across. I started seeing some of the world because of baseball, different parts of the country traveling with the University of Michigan, playing with the USA team and moving around. I got exposed to so much. Q: I remember seeing a picture of you carrying the flag in the opening ceremonies of the Pan Am games That must have been a thrill.

Card catalog description Describes nine memorable moments from baseball's past, featuring Bill Wambsganss, Babe Ruth, Joe Nuxhall, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Reggie Jackson, Dave Dravecky, Kirk Gibson, and Jim Abbott. Reader review(s): A must read for young ball players , May 21, 2000 My boys (9 and 14) have read many of Matt Christopher's books. All are good, some are great treats. I gave a copy of "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers" to each boy on my baseball team last year. They loved it! This year I am giving each player a copy of Christopher's "Great Moments." I read this collection of great moments (an unassisted triple play in the World Series for example) to my boys and enjoyed every page. We re-read some of the stories they were so much fun. This is a must read for all young/new baseball fans.

California Famed one handed major league baseball player, Jim Abbott, overcame a birth defect of only one hand. He became an amazing pro pritcher and ball player. Through stories, anecdotes, jokes, some self deprecation, and even failure and pain, he shows that people can overcome perceived limitations and reach their dreams. Southpaw Jim Abbott was born without a right hand. He spent hours as a youngster bouncing a ball off a wall to practice fielding as well as throwing. Instead of looking at what he did not have, Abbott's father helped him find ways to win. Abbott was the starting quarterback on his high school football team, which went to the finals of the Michigan state championship. He showed enough promise as a pitcher to be drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays shortly after graduation, but he went to the University of Michigan instead on a baseball scholarship. He had a career record of 26 wins and 8 losses at the school. As a member of Team USA in 1987, he became the first American pitcher in 25 years to beat a Cuban team on Cuban soil. The team won a silver medal at the Pan-American Games and Abbott won the U.S. Baseball Federation's Golden Spikes award as the best amateur player in the country. In 1987 Abbott was the first baseball player to win the Sullivan Award as the nation's outstanding amateur athlete. In the 1988 Olympics, Abbott was the winning pitcher in a 5-3 victory over Japan that brought the U.S. its first gold medal in baseball.

Jim Dandy #42 Classic Moment: September 4, 1993 Jim Abbott did not get off to a good start against the Indians when he issued a leadoff walk to Kenny Lofton. But Felix Fermin grounded into a double play and then Abbott settled into cruise control. Though Abbott struck out only three, the Indians never advanced a runner past first base and hit only six balls out of the infield as Abbott pitched the first no-hitter at Yankee Stadium since Dave Righetti did it 10 years earlier. Leading off the ninth inning, Lofton attempted to force the Yankees' one-handed pitcher to field a bunt, but fouled his attempt off and heard raucous boos from the Stadium crowd. Two batters after Lofton grounded out to shortstop, Carlos Baerga did the same to end the game. Baerga, a switch-hitter, took the unorthodox approach of batting left-handed against Abbott, but the ploy did not work. Earlier in the season, Abbott had carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the White Sox, but it was broken up by Bo Jackson's single.

Jim Abbott hasn't let anything stop him from being the best he can be
When Jim Abbott was a kid, he loved to pitch imaginary baseball games. He would throw a ball against a brick wall near his home, in Flint, Michigan, and pretend he was Nolan Ryan. Jim's dream was to play in the major leagues, even though he had been born without a right hand. "I never realized how difficult it would be," he says. "I just always thought it would be possible." Jim was right: He now pitches for the New York Yankees! In 1989, Jim joined the California Angels after college. In 1991, he won 18 games. Last season, after joining the Yankees, he pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians! A Daily Effort
Most people think Jim's greatest challenge has been convincing people he could play as well as a two-handed person. "A few people told me that I wouldn't go far in sports. I didn't listen," he says.
For Jim, the hardest thing has been always striving to be his best. "It's a daily effort," he says. "There are times when you're tired and times when you don't believe in yourself. That's when you have to stick it out and draw on the confidence that you have deep down beneath all the doubts and worries." Jim's parents helped him develop his confidence. They encouraged him to try things. At age 5, Jim saw all the neighborhood kids playing baseball, so he asked his dad to teach him to catch and hit.

His list of accomplishments included a no-hitter and 87 wins. Abbott had a stand-out career with the University of Michigan and was the first baseball player to win the Sullivan Award, an honor given to the nation's top amateur athlete. In 1988, he was a member of the U.S. baseball team that captured the Gold Medal in the Olympics. The Angels drafted him in the first round of the 1988 amateur draft and moved him straight to the major league level. He responded by winning 12 games as a rookie in 1989. He followed that season up with a 10-14 effort, but was an 18-game winner in 1991. In 1992, he posted a 2.77 ERA, but lack of support left Jim Abbott with an unimpressive 7-15 record. In 1993, the New York Yankees sent J.T. Snow and 2 minor league pitchers to the Angels for Abbott. Abbott responded with a no-hitter on Sept. 4 against the Cleveland Indians. He signed as a free agent with the White Sox in 1995 and returned to California in July 1996. After finishing 2-18 with a 7.18 ERA in 1996, he found himself released after Spring Training in 1997.
