Reggie White, 36, the most-honored athlete ever to play defensive end in the National Football League's long history has had an illustrious career with both the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers. White has seen his talents, performance and persona elicit the ultimate in superlatives for more than a decade. He helped the Packers defeat New England in Super Bowl XXXI in January 1997 and led his team back to the Super Bowl in 1998. Reggie, a 6-5, 304 pound defensive end, has been voted to a record 12th straight Pro Bowl, the NFL’s annual all-star game. Reggie, who put off plans for retirement, joined the Packers in 1993 after eight outstanding seasons in Philadelphia. Reggie has played 14 seasons and is a certain NFL Hall of Famer as soon as he becomes eligible. Reggie White was a consensus All-America in 1983 at Tennessee; 7-time All-NFL (1986-92) with Philadelphia; Reggie signed as a free agent with Green Bay in 1993; he played a key role in the Packers 1997 Super Bowl victory. Most people expected that the next step in Reggie White's football life was to have been an induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in four years. Instead, White, the NFL's all-time sacks leader, ended a one-year retirement, when he agreed to contract terms with the Carolina Panthers on Friday 21 July. "We look forward to having Reggie White on our football team,'' coach George Seifert said. "He brings a special talent and special mindset that we believe will help in our development as a team.'' "To see No. 92 out there in our colors, I caught myself looking over there two or three times and saying 'Wow, there's Reggie White in our uniform,'" quarterback Steve Beuerlein said. The move gave the Panthers in 2000 the highest-profile player in franchise history and it was thought perhaps a major upgrade to a defense that ranked 26th in 1999 with only 35 sacks.

Brief USFL History - adapted largely from
The United States Football League was a "shooting star" on the professional football skyline. The USFL was founded by David Dixon, though he would never hold a title or actually field a team. Formed on May 11 1982, the first games commenced in 1983. Initially the league was made up of 12 teams in major markets across the country, with franchises established in New York (the Meadowlands, NJ), Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Tampa, Oakland, Denver, Washington, Philadelphia, Birmingham and San Diego (eventually switched to Phoenix). The first college player drafted by the USFL by the LA Express was Dan Marino. He didn't sign. However 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker did. Running back Walker left Georgia a year early to sign with the New Jersey Generals and became a key draw card for the league. Despite his presence however the Generals failed to lift on-field and the championship was eventually decided between the Michigan Panthers who nipped the Philadelphia Stars. The USFL was made for TV. The league had a network (ABC ) deal and cable (ESPN) deal. Despite what could be regarded as a successful first year from an attendance and a TV ratings perspective, it was television rights and payment for future rights that would be one of the reasons that the league would eventually fail. The other key reason was the larger than expected players salaries. In the first season these factors resulted in only the Denver Gold (who topped the league in attendance) and the Tampa Bay Bandits managing to escape large financial losses.

The head-ringing blows he delivered on a football field stood in stark contrast to the messages of love and understanding he preached from a pulpit. Reggie White was a contradiction in cleats, a 290-pound champion of peace and dispenser of controlled violence. Over a 15-year professional career that started in 1984 with the Memphis Showboats in the USFL and continued with the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers, he handled both roles with vigor and passion, a tribute to his dual commitment as a licensed Baptist minister and football's "Minister of Defense." His football passion was driven by a powerful body that could stampede blockers and move around the field with catlike quickness and sprinters speed. The sight of the hulking White glaring at a quarterback from his defensive end position was enough to disrupt game plans and trigger premature exits from the pocket. He was the focus of pregame meetings, the defender who could dictate offensive strategy and turn games by himself. His durability also was special. In 1985, in fact, he played in a combined 31 games (18 with Memphis and 13 with Philadelphia).

''MINISTER OF DEFENSE" SUBMIT TO JESUS
Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Reggie White an ordained minister condemns gays, sex and secularism in an address to the Wisconsin Assembly. His sermon has politicians and corporate execs nervous. Web Posted: March 29, 1998 he Defense has spoken. Make that the Rev. Reggie White, part-time ordained minister and full-time defensive lineman for the Green Bay Packers, who yesterday expounded his opinions on religion and society for the Wisconsin State Assembly. In Wisconsin, of course, football is nearly as much of a sacrament as it is in Texas, and Reggie White is, well, almost a god even if the Pack didn't win the last Super Bowl. In a rambling discourse, White told his audience of elected representatives that "we as a people need to come together, and this nation needs to submit under God and his authority and denounce sin." It wasn't the first time this sort of message came from the Minister of Defense; White's outspoken opinions have attracted coverage from news media for several years, and there was plenty of it recently when he justified "prayer circles" of beefy Packers kneeling on the turf at the end of each game. But yesterday, the content was more blustery and offensive than the usual thank-you-to-the-deity-for-a-helluva'-game, or a chance to grab the Lombardi Trophy and bring the NFL championship back to Green Bay, a feat which Reggie White contributed mightily to a couple of seasons ago. Yesterday's sermon has ignited a fire storm of controversy in Wisconsin, the NFL and even some corporate offices in New York. White condemned homosexuality as a sin which is has been permitted to "run rampant" and talked about supposed "gifts" of various ethnic and racial groups something which certain observers say came dangerously close to echoing old offensive stereotypes. Associated Press noted that according to White, "blacks were gifted worshippers, whites were good at tapping into money and American Indians weren't enslaved because they knew the territory and 'how to sneak up on people.'"

For Green Bay's Reggie White , there's not much difference between faith, football, and everything else. Whether he's chewing up offensive linemen on his way to a sure place in the Football Hall of Fame, speaking out against the racism and injustice of firebombings in black churches including his own, or planting ministries in the tough turf of inner cities, he invests the same intensity, the same commitment of will, energy and focus. In the Trenches is Reggie's own fast-paced, inspiring account of his colorful, sometimes controversial career, both in the pros and in the pulpit. Packed with insights, observations, and war stories, it delves into the heart of an amazing athlete who balances an array of extremes: he is both beloved and feared, tough and gentle, competitive and compassionate, fierce and generous. continued at http://www.acloserlook.com/9612acl/sponsor/inthetrenches.html

Reggie White, one of the National Football League's greatest defensive players of all time, has accused Jesse Jackson of taking "a quarter of million dollars from NASCAR and not do[ing] anything with it." NASCAR has reportedly given at least $250,000 to Jackson's Rainbow/PUSH Coalition as part of an effort to increase the number of minority racers in the sport. Asked by co-host Brian Kilmeade if the money NASCAR gave Jackson amounted to a "payoff," White agreed. "Well, pretty much ... that's what is really disappointing, and that's happened a few times with Jesse. That's really disappointing," White responded. "[It] seems as though [Jackson] is using his status and his organization to raise money for his organization without helping to benefit the people who are trying to move into those professions," White, who is African American, added.

We've always had to endure such people - witness for example Charles Lindbergh's statements on behalf of Nazi ideology. Lindburgh will be remembered as a great American and aviation pioneer - but his unfortuante political stance will forever marr his image. However, the fact that such people will always exist and that they certainly have the right to think and say whatever they want does not automatically mean that the rest of us have to sit and listen passively - and this remains true when the beliefs being espoused have a religious basis.
