It is a disgrace that more was not done to recognise John's immense contribution to football while he was still with us. Besides, who needs to be a knight when you are already a King?

Dear Member This weekend sees us enter the thirteenth fixture date on our busy calendar for the 2003 – 2004 season. So far many of our teams have taken every opportunity to play at each date and ensure they are well on the way to a sensible conclusion. Others have been affected by external competitions and will know only too well the need to keep right up to speed and liase with their fixture secretary for smooth and easy fixture arrangements. Congratulations to all the newly elected clubs who have settled down and made good starts in their new environment, and to those that have not done so well there is still plenty of time to change round and maybe get success in a supplementary cup. The new teams in the Under 15 and 16 age groups are showing their potential and making a mark in many divisions which will keep us all on our toes. Well done to the teams that have progressed to the December conference dates in the District and County cups, good luck, keep up the good work.

John Charles, the Gentle Giant
Welsh forward John Charles paved the way for the abolition of the maximum wage in England after he played in Italy for five years, but his impact in Turin was even greater, reports Ben Lyttleton.
Leeds refused to sell the Welsh forward to an English rival but were offered a world record £65,000 fee from Juventus. Charles said: "The manager called me into his office and said 'Juventus want you.' I said, 'Who are Juventus?' and he looked at me and said, 'They're one of the best teams in Italy.' I'd never heard of them. It was a complete culture shock because in Leeds I'd been a shandy man, suddenly I was presented with red wine at the pre-match lunch. The first time I was faced with a bowl of spaghetti it went everywhere but down my throat."
Charles moved to Turin and scored the winner in his first three matches - against Verona, Udinese and Genoa. "It went from there and in the first year I was there we won the championship," he said. He scored 28 goals in 34 games that season, including three hat-tricks against Atalanta, Sampdoria and Lazio. It was enough for him to be voted Italian Footballer of the Year.

His partnership with the little Argentinian genius Omar Sivori was the most feared in Serie A. "We got together and it just happened. We gelled. It was a classic big man-small man partnership," says Charles, who now lives in West Yorkshire. "I settled in quite quickly. I didn’t get homesick. I think it was down to leaving Swansea for Leeds when I was 16. Going from Leeds to Italy was nothing in comparison. I learned to speak Italian as well. That was important because you’ve got to get on off the pitch as well as on it."
Before Charles’ arrival La Vecchia Signora were in disarray, finishing ninth in 1956-57 - disastrous by their high standards. Milan, Inter and Fiorentina had overtaken them. "They brought in a few players, myself included, and we won the championship," recalls Charles. "To be honest, I never thought we’d win it in my first season."
Because of his scoring exploits and impeccable behaviour on the pitch, Charles became the idol of the Juventus tifosi and one of the most respected figures in world football. Il Gigante Buono won his first Coppa Italia in 1959, both Lo Scudetto and the Coppa Italia in 1960, and another Scudetto in 1961.

They met every Sunday for more than 20 years. "I t is an unseasonably warm Saturday morning in late October. The phone rings. An unfamiliar voice asks, "Is this Charles…" He hesitates a moment on my last name, as if he’s reading it off a card. A telemarketer, I think. "Yes," I say, as my mind races to come up with some excuse why I can’t talk. "Well, this is Charles Glover." And tomorrow, Sunday, we are scheduled to hold our tenth annual reunion game in Central Park. That, I think, is why I am speaking with Charlie Glover. He is calling to chat about the upcoming game. But I am wrong. I hung up the phone fairly certain that Charlie would make it to the game. That night I had trouble sleeping in anticipation, not only of seeing Charlie again, but at the thought of reliving, at least for a couple of hours, the glory of youth, not so much on the field but in the bond that I had established with these men over the years. I knew that seeing these men, playing along side them, our steps slowed at pretty much the same rate, would keep me going for at least another year.

Obituary: John Charles

Former players queue up to pay tribute to one of the greats of the game
Kevin Mitchell
Sunday February 22, 2004
The Observer

Kerry Dixon made the point before yesterday's Chelsea-Arsenal match that players from his time would love the profile of the modern superstar footballer. It was the former Chelsea striker's opinion that this is the real age of glamour, transformed in a mere decade. John Charles lived in an entirely different era of celebrity, of course, a black-and-white image on a page. Television did not track his every charge from centre-half or, later, centre-forward. Charles was a newsreel hero in a time of unchallenged deference. He was on swap cards and was talked about in awe, but he was not hounded by glossy magazines or the subject of tired gossip.

Swansea and Leeds prepare to commemorate John Charles
Monday February 23, 2004
The Guardian

Juventus players, directors and fans paid tribute to their former striker John Charles before yesterday's Italian league match against Bologna at the Stadio Dall'Ara. Players from both teams stood around the centre circle and fans clapped - in Italy applause rather than silence is the way of commemorating death - before the Serie A game got under way. Juventus players wore black armbands, and some of the club's directors were seen wiping their eyes in the stands the day after the former Welsh international died at the age of 72.

Farming, King Charles and the Two-way Pump
By Fred Clay I was born on 21 February 1919. My family were Quinton people. My grandfather ran Ivyhouse Farm at the top of Stoney Lane and my father worked for him. There were no houses in Stoney Lane then. My grandmother used to take a basket of eggs and sell them to customers in Edgbaston - a moneyed area in those days. The farm ceased to function as such around the 1920s but the farmhouse continued in existence until it was demolished about 1936. I had four sisters. My eldest, Margaret, was a Sunday School teacher. Every week until the age of fourteen I received a halfpenny for pocket money. I remember my weekly visit to Miss Field's sweet shop in High Street. I used to take ages deciding what to buy. Looking back, I think Miss Field must have been a very patient woman. Quinton Park used to be at the back of my present home. Someone gave the park to the village and also the allotments, most of which were swallowed up by the Expressway when it was built in 1964. Quinton was a nice place to live. It was all fields around here-right across to Hurst Green. Charlie Harris owned a field opposite the church. It stretched from Walters Road up to Kingsway. Quinton Villa Football Club played there. Walter Powell and Eddie Mullett were among the players. The club had a goat as their mascot. My dad used to keep it for them in a sty. I used to hold it while he milked it. It once pulled me over while I was holding its head.

When Charles Mann came into the NFL in 1983, his number one goal was to earn respect from his peers. He earned it with four Pro Bowl appearances to his credit. One of the most physical pass-rushers to play the game, Charles used his 6'6", 270 lbs. size and strength to overpower opponents. The Redskins' Defensive End recorded 14 1/2 sacks in 1985…his highest output in one year. However, even when he was not sacking the quarterback, he was still a threat, as his 31 quarterback hurries will attest. The twelve-year veteran, who led the Superbowl XXII-Champion Redskins with 10 sacks, had compiled 83 sacks in his career. Now, that Charles is off the field, he works as hard as he did when he was playing. Mann credits his faith for helping him keep a balance in life. He devotes a great deal of his time to the Good Samaritan Foundation, a organization that he and Art Monk, Tim Johnson, and Earnest Byner founded in 1993 to help restore hope in the inner city. He also finds time to make personal appearances, especially enjoying talking to the youth with a motivational message to reach for your own goals, and walk hand in hand with Christ.

Introduction

As a long time fan of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly I have always tried to discover some kind of history of the magazine. No official reference exists and so what follows is my attempt at research into the background of this wonderful publication. If by chance there is someone out there with more information please get in touch so that I can add more background.
In the current climate football magazines struggle - Match of the Day has now published its final issue; Total Football's circulation is still trying for 30,000 copies sold.
Manchester United Magazine (IPC) has seen its circulation slump by 21% to 44,000 in 2002.
IPC's World Soccer hovers around the 55,000 mark and increased by 5% in 2002 and the new monthly format for Shoot has regenerated its figures with a 35% year on increase to 30,000.
World Soccer is the UK's leading international football title.
