A former Cardinal assistant coach, Willingham had established himself as one of the top, young assistant coaches in the NFL during his three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. So when Stanford Athletic Director Ted Leland went looking for a head coach to follow Bill Walsh after the 1994 season, it was a former Cardinal assistant whose character, integrity and leadership skills had impressed Leland years earlier who became Leland’s top choice. Willingham, Stanford’s running backs coach from 1989-91 under Dennis Green, returned to The Farm on November 28, 1994 as the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football at Stanford University.

    Signature Game
    October 20, 2001
Practice certainly made perfect for Tyrone Willingham's Stanford team when it came to executing an on-side kick. The Cardinal had worked on the play all week in practice and it turned out to be a key to its 49-42 upset of fifth-ranked Oregon in Eugene, Ore. After Stanford scored a touchdown to cut a 14-point deficit in half with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Willingham had Mike Biselli chip the ensuing kickoff rather than boot the ball deep. Teammate Colin Branch recovered, leading to a touchdown by tailback Kerry Carter with 5½ minutes left. Biselli, however, had the ensuing extra point blocked and the score remained Oregon 42, Stanford 41. But then the Cardinal turned an interception into the winning score with 70 seconds left. Carter's fourth touchdown run of the game and a two-point conversion gave Stanford the lead for good as it ended Oregon's home winning streak at 23, the longest in the nation. This was Oregon's only loss of the season and deprived the Ducks of a berth in the national championship game. This might not have happened if not for Stanford's successful on-side kick.

    Vikings Go Tits Up
ESPN recently ran a series of pieces on the demise of the Vikings. I have written about this before but everyone needs to know what went wrong. Any discussion about how good a team is starts with talent. The Vikings no longer have much of it. An article by Mel Kiper, Jr. about how poorly the Vikings have been drafting lately shows better than anything why they have dropped to the depths of the standings. Now for a deep thought…where a man thinks he is strongest there he is weakest. The one draft pick that Kiper and everyone else raves over is Culpepper. Daunte is a stud and just looking at the pick itself was a good selection. However, the fact that it was completely unnecessary to draft a QB there is completely ignored. The Vikings had Randall Cunningham coming off a career year and were about to sign Jeff George. I know Cunningham was older than most of the players fathers and they needed a replacement but the key to the Vikings’ future was Jeff George. I don’t care what anyone thinks about Jeff George he was the perfect QB for the Vikings system. I have been critical of George since I saw him in person, at what was then the Hoosier Dome, literally drop the football and go into the fetal position before getting tackled. It was a pathetic fold. I never had any respect for him after that. When he was signed by the Vikes I was worried about his head but was not as disgruntled as I thought I would be. He had the big time arm and chucker mentality that fit the Vikings offense perfectly. He had matured and was as competitive as anyone else on the field.

Stanford football players seek redemption against Notre Dame
Rick Eymer Rick Eymer (October 04, 2002) So what kind of emotions run through a football player's head when he's about to confront the coach who recruited him to Stanford, and is now standing on the enemy sidelines? That's what faces the Cardinal, whom take a 1-2 record into South Bend on Saturday to face No. 9-ranked Notre Dame (4-0) and former coach Tyrone Willingham. "The guys fell really strongly about the job they did and the opportunities that Tyrone and his staff created for them, so there is an excitement to show that they're continuing to develop," said Stanford coach Buddy Teevens. "There is certainly some inside knowledge and awareness based on the fact that they've worked with these guys over time, but our guys have also changed over time. They're a year older, they're involved in a different system and they've matured physically and mentally. It's a great opportunity to play a great team regardless of who's coaching them." Stanford also has the opportunity to show its better than what it showed in last week's humbling Pac-10 loss to Arizona State. After all, the Cardinal have shown a penchant for knocking off top teams. That all happened under Willingham, of course, so its also a chance to show off in front of him.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: A triple homecoming at Stanford this year
San Jose State's Baldwin and Cal's Holmoe return following stints as Cardinal assistant coaches by Rick Eymer SStanford University has one official homecoming football game scheduled this year but, in reality, there will be three. There's the regularly scheduled contest against Oregon on Sept. 27. Then there are also the ones that bookend the schedule: Sept. 6 when San Jose State visits Stanford, and Nov. 22, when California travels to Stanford for the 100th edition of the Big Game. What makes those "homecoming" games? Consider this: San Jose State coach Dave Baldwin spent five years as an assistant coach on the Farm, 1984-88 under Jack Elway. California coach Tom Holmoe spent two seasons at Stanford, coaching under Bill Walsh in 1992-93. Baldwin and Holmoe certainly know their way around the Stanford campus. Baldwin's tenure was marked by the Cardinal's appearance in the 1986 Sun Bowl, Stanford's only Bowl appearance in the '80s. Brad Muster and Toi Cook were among the big names that season as Stanford won five of its first six games. Baldwin coached the wide receivers, though Muster was the team's leading receiver in 1986. In fact, Muster led the team in receiving and rushing in Baldwin's first three seasons there. In 1987, Jeff James was Baldwin's top receiver.

Fantasy Football: NFL Week 4 breakdown
By John Wick and Brian Scrobel
Special to Packer Plus Sept. 18, 1996 Week 3 brought some sanity to fantasy football leagues. Once again the stars of the game began to have an impact. Dan Marino and Drew Bledsoe joined Ricky Watters and Curtis Martin back in the good graces with owners. Yes, there are still some disappointments, but it was nice to have a week that was not dominated by kickers. As we reach the end of the first quarter, expect the major players to begin stepping up their games. There should not be many more surprises. Speaking of surprises, was anyone clever enough to draft Karim Abdul-Jabbar or Chris T. Jones? In many leagues, these guys went as free agents. As your team hits the first turn, you need to be considering fine tuning the roster. The following is a list of players that may be available. At quarterback, Rodney Peete, Philadelphia; Chris Chandler, Houston; Gus Frerotte, Washington. At running back, Reggie Brooks, Tampa Bay; Stanley Pritchett, Miami; Lamar Smith, Seattle; Jamal Anderson, Atlanta; Tommy Vardell, San Francisco. At wide receiver, Ed McCaffrey, Denver; Dale Carter and Chris Penn, Kansas City; Derrick Alexander, Baltimore. At tight end, Jason Dunn, Philadelphia; Frank Wycheck, Houston; Eric Green, free agent for now. These guys wont come in and light up your league, but they could give you a great bye week edge with a chance at becoming every-week starters.

Columnists Finder on the Web: Maddox's frightening injury Such images are rare, but a part of football Tuesday, November 19, 2002 Images remain seared in memories. Tommy Maddox lay motionless on The Coliseum sod Sunday, breathing but unconscious for nearly five minutes, commanding the attention of medical personnel from the Steelers and Tennessee Titans sidelines, stirring the prayers of genuflecting teammates and foes, raising the fret of an entire stadium and viewers across Football America for some 17 minutes. The backboard. The ambulance. The palpable fear. As they stared at the still body of the Steelers' starting quarterback, they each flashed to scenes too familiar. Terance Mathis and Ken Whisenhunt saw Dennis Byrd. Kevin Colbert saw Reggie Brown.
