Johnny Unitas, regarded as the NFL's best-ever quarterback, dies of a heart attack at the age of 69. E-mail your tributes to an NFL legend.
This debate is now closed. The "Golden Arm" broke nearly every NFL passing record and won three championships with the Baltimore Colts in an 18-year career. He was the first to throw for 40,000 yards in his career and now ranks seventh, surpassed by a group of quarterbacks who played in an era when the rules made passing easier. Unitas retired after the 1973 season holding 22 records, including most passes attempted and completed and most touchdown passes. Send your tributes and memories of Unitas' glorious career. I was 11-years-old when I first saw him play - I am now 55. He was brilliant as a strategist, and tough as a river dock street fighter. The modern steroid loaded players on artificial turf couldn't hold a candle to him.

  • The first pro football player Before Johnny Unitas, college stars were the only famous football players. The great No. 19 changed that forever and took the NFL to the top. By Allen Barra For many of us, Johnny Unitas was the first pro football player. I mean that in several senses. He was the first pro football player many of us knew, the first to be mentioned at the dinner table along with Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays and Yogi Berra, perhaps not as famous as them, but ... How shall I phrase this? The first pro football player whose name your mother knew. He was the first pro football player whose picture we recognized that crew cut looked like something he'd been born with the first football player whose number, 19, we wore, and the first one whose throwing style (right shoulder hunched down, both hands gripping the ball as he dropped back to throw) we tried to imitate like the windups of Sandy Koufax and Juan Marichal.

Unitas died in September at age 69. Now his statue also may serve as a memorial to a man who never forgot his alma mater as he achieved unprecedented glory in professional football. While he left U of L almost 50 years ago, he remained an important part of the institution, both as a symbol of pride and as an active fund raiser and occasional recruiter. Never flamboyant or boastful, Unitas played football with a confidence that always seemed to get the job donethoroughly and quietly. A pure drop-back passer, Unitas was the first to throw for 40,000 yards and now ranks seventh on the all-time list, surpassed only by a group of quarterbacks who played several more games each season under rules that make passing easier. Unitas retired after the 1973 season with 22 NFL records, among them marks for most passes attempted and completed, most passing yardage, most touchdown passes and most seasons leading the league in TD passes. He completed 2,830 of 5,186 passes for 40,239 yards and 290 touchdowns. He threw at least one TD pass in 47 straight games, a record not challenged since it was set from 1956 to 1960. In 1987 Frank Gitschier, who recruited Unitas to U of L in 1950 when larger schools passed on him, persuaded Unitas to lend his name to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award annually honors the top senior quarterback in college football.

Johnny Unitas (1933-2002) John Constantine Unitas was born on May 7, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His father died when Johnny was six, leaving Johnny's mother to raise her four children. Johnny helped the family by earning 75 cents a ton shoveling coal into basement bins. Unitas began his football career at St. Justin's High School . During Johnny's sophomore year, the starting quarterback broke his ankle. Johnny, it was decided, could throw the ball well enough and was moved to the QB position with less than a week to learn the entire offense. When it was time for Unitas to begin looking at colleges where he could play football, both Notre Dame and Indiana University were unwilling to take a gamble that his six foot, 138-pound frame would bulk up. Unitas received an offer from the

    by Donald DeMarco
His name sounded like a rallying-cry for team unity: "Johnny Unitas" (Unite Us). It was a moniker seemingly designed by a Hollywood script writer. Yet, as if it were his destiny, he could not have been more worthy of this most auspicious appellation. While Cardinal William H. Keeler, archbishop of Baltimore, officiated at his funeral at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen (Sept. 17, 2002), a plane flew overhead carrying a red-lettered banner reading "Unitas We Stand." 2,2000 people packed the church, some arriving as early as 4:00 am, to pay tribute to a man who, in the Cardinal's words, "led and touched others by his integrity and loyalty." Frank Gitschier, Unitas' former coach at the University of Louisville, was the first to speak. He referred to this hero as "the most accessible legend I've ever heard of," a man who "always had his priorities right: God

Johnny U. a 'defining figure' By Vic Carucci
    NFL Insider

(Sept. 11, 2002) The phone call came much later in the day and with far less urgency than the one that I will forever associate with this date. A year ago, it was my wife, frantically telling me to get off the airplane on which I sat at the Denver airport the morning after covering the Broncos-Giants season-opener because "they're crashing planes into the World Trade Center!" On this day, it was one of our NFL.com editors informing me of a breaking story on which I no doubt would want to write a commentary. Johnny Unitas: 1933 - 2002

But on a day of remembrance of our nation's worst tragedy, I was along with so many others looking forward to happier times. I was hoping, quite frankly, to get through the remaining hours of this Sept. 11 without being confronted with more sadness.

towson university When the football team qualified for the Patriot League, the Towson Tigers realized a dream. The required enhancements to the stadium helped to create a sports complex for football, men’s and women’s lacrosse, field hockey and track and field. There’s a new field house, the stadium nearly tripled its seating capacity and the track was resurfaced. There are more restrooms, concession stands, parking, ticket windows and gates. Everything from the field lighting to playing surface is new and improved.
