Poise, Class, Integrity, Fearlessness, Resolve- these are the attributes of a true champion, on and off the field. Johnny Unitas was the embodiment of these attributes to a degree that, sadly, we may never see his likes again in the world of professional sport. Johnny Unitas Award Finalists
For so many years the Unitas has been a pre-cursor to the Heisman and it looks like it could be that way this year. Looking at the candidates, there's a couple of rocket arms, a couple of future pros, and a couple of over-rated guys. Here's my rundown and you tell me why I'm wrong: Rockets: J.P. Losman (Tulane) and B.J. Symons (Texas Tech)
These guys never met a pass pattern they didn't like and couldn't throw. Incredible arm strenghth (and arm endurance!) Losman might make it to the pros but I seriously doubt it. Symons out to be a Heisman front-runner because he's got a great shot to re-write a lot of records in the NCAA.
Future Pros: Eli Manning (Ole Miss), Jon Navarre (Michigan), Philip Rivers (NC State), and Matt Schaub (Virginia)
These guys are the real deal. Eli is no Peyton, but that's more of a compliment to Peyton than a knock on Eli. Navarre is a great leader and will make a fine backup in the pros. Rivers and Schaub are exceptional QBs and at least one of them is going to be a starter on Sundays.
Over-rated: Jason White (Oklahoma)
Here's the skinny: White is an average QB with a lot of guts. It works for him, but he's the least capable passer of all the other candidates. On a roster, he would backup any of the other six candidates. Yes, White has some numbers, but that mere fact that he needs a walker to get from the huddle to the line ought to tell you a little something about the help he gets from his offensive line. If anyone in this mix benefits from the system they're playing in, it's White. No disprespect, but he is probably just one of the top 20 QBs in college ball. There's no place for this guy in the NFL. He's the Sooners version of Major Applewhite.

is BellaOnline's Football Host Johnny Unitas: The Passing of a Legend I didn’t know Johnny Unitas as a player. He retired from football in 1974. I don’t remember him because I was barely six-years-old at the time. But, you can’t love the game of football and not know Johnny Unitas the legend.
Johnny Unitas Glance was born May 7, 1933. He grew up in Pittsburgh, but it was Baltimore where he first became famous. From 1956-1972, he served as the Baltimore Colts star quarterback. As his legend grew, the 6’1” 195-pound “Johnny U” also became known for his crew-cut and black high-top sneakers. He was poised, talented, confident, and had dogged determination. He was so confident, in fact, that he often called his own plays on the field. Former Colts teammate John Mackey once said that it was like “being on the field with God.” Unfortunately for Johnny, the Steelers waited too long to release him and no other team could pick him up. So, he worked construction and played semi-pro football for the Bloomfield Rams. In February of 1956, the Baltimore Colts called Johnny and were very interested in the talents that he offered. Thus began a storied 17-year career that sets the bar for all quarterbacks that come after.

Travel Exhibit

Current Exhibits: Johnny Unitas
He was the greatest football player in the history of the National Football League, changing the way the game was played. It seemed appropriate that the Museum devoted to the greatest baseball player would also become the Museum devoted to the greatest football player. Last March, Johnny Unitas donated his football collection to the Babe Ruth Museum because he wanted to "give something back to the fans of Baltimore."
" Johnny Unitas: The Babe Ruth of the NFL " features much of 200-plus objects and personal photographs spanning both private and professional endeavors. See artifacts like his unforgettable high-top cleats, a single-bar helmet from the 1950s, the football thrown for Unitas' last touchdown as a Colt and his 1964 NFL Most Valuable Player trophy. View never-before-seen photos of Unitas' family and career, as well as film footage of his high school team. Planned to open before Unitas' death in September, the exhibit also features a condolence book for fans to leave their memories of the "Golden Arm," as well as a section on how the NFL honored Unitas, including Baltimore QB Chris Redman's high tops from the first Ravens game after Unitas' death.

Football history
Fantasy football Team gear "As long as the Colts have Unitas, they could put nine or 10 girls on the field and still win." 49ers coach Jack Christiansen, 1967, The Sporting News
The distinctive stoop shoulders were sandwiched by crew-cut hair and black, high-top shoes. You couldn't help but pick Johnny Unitas out of a football crowd. And you couldn't help but admire his extraordinary ability to pick apart defenses with commanding, unwavering confidence. He never backed down from anybody over 18 NFL seasons, building an unsurpassed reputation for toughness while gaining status as one of the most fabled stars in league history. Johnny U. was a master craftsman, an unlikely looking athlete who overcame physical limitations with impressive intangibles. He wasn't fast, but he knew when and how to run. His arm was not as strong as some, but he threw with remarkable touch and timing. Most of all, Unitas had courage, coolness under fire and the ability to lead, a quality Baltimore teammate John Mackey acknowledged when he said, "It's like being in the huddle with God." The no-nonsense Unitas was a pocket passer who was peerless when it came to standing in against the rush and delivering the ball at the last instant before contact. He also was a play-calling genius who could mentally dissect a defense, make the perfect audible and get the ball to the right player. He was in complete command when a game was on the line and was masterful at driving his team against the clock, an ability that vaulted him into prominence when he led the Colts to their classic overtime victory over the New York Giants in the 1958 title game.

JOHNNY UNITAS
Johnny U. Johnny Unitas played in 10 Pro Bowls, was picked for five all-league teams, was Player of the Year three times, and led the Baltimore Colts to NFL Championships in 1958 and 1959. He also set an NFL record by throwing at least one touchdown pass in 47 straight games, a record that no one has yet come close to. His 1958 championship victory over the New York Giants is often cited as the best game ever played John Constantine Unitas was born in Pittsburgh on May 7, 1933. He played football at St. Justin's, a small Catholic high school. He did not play quarterback, however, until his junior year. He wanted to play for Notre Dame, but was told he was too small. He was offered a scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh despite being fairly small, but did not meet the academic requirements. He did accept a scholarship to the University of Louisville where he started at quarterback for 3 and a half years.
