THE OORANG INDIANS OF LARUE, OHIO
Part of the National Football League 1922 - 1923
Founded 75 years ago by Walter Lingo, owner of The Oorang Kennel Company of LaRue, Ohio, the Oorang Indians were a unique team. Coached and recruited by Jim Thorpe, the team was comprised entirely of Native American players. Lingo established the team in 1922 as a way to generate publicity for his business. It was part of the fledgling National Football League during the 1922 and 1923 seasons. The team disbanded in 1924. LaRue has the distinction of being the smallest community to have a National Football League franchise. Two members of the Oorang Indians, Jim Thorpe and Joe Guyon, were named charter members of the National Football League Hall of Fame.
In 1997, The Marion County Historical Society erected an Ohio Historic Marker on the site of the Oorang Indians’ practice field in LaRue. Walter Lingo
Founder of the Oorang Indians
Walter Lingo spent most of his time breeding and training his championship Oorang Airedale dogs in LaRue, Ohio. He invited celebrities, such as Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers, boxer Jack Dempsey, actor Gary Cooper, Tris Speaker of the Cleveland Indians, and Olympic sprinter Charles Paddock to LaRue to hunt with him and his dogs. The Oorang Kennel Company and its Oorang Airedales became known throughout the world.
Lingo and Jim Thorpe, world-famous athlete, became friends through the hunting excursions. The two developed the idea of creating a football team composed entirely of Native American players. Players would also work as trainers for Lingo’s Oorang Airedales.

Jim Thorpe Day declared Harrisburg, April 30 – He was an athlete and a role model that captured the hearts of Pennsylvanians and on May 17, the life and achievements of James Francis Thorpe will be celebrated by all Pennsylvanians. House members unanimously approved a resolution ( H.R. 189 ) offered by state Rep. Keith McCall, declaring May 17 James Francis Thorpe Day in Pennsylvania. "I offer this resolution each year as a way to remember one of the world’s greatest athletes, whose final resting place is in a town named for him – Jim Thorpe," McCall said. "May 17 also is the start of a two-day celebration, which includes a special presentation by Thorpe’s family, as well as entertainment, children’s rides and games and food and crafts. The Jim Thorpe Birthday Committee, a subcommittee of the Jim Thorpe Chamber of Commerce, does a wonderful job of putting together this annual event." Festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. May 17 at the monument. "Jim Thorpe's memory will live on forever in every student athlete, every Olympian, every professional and non-professional athlete," McCall said. "Thorpe remains the only athlete to date, to excel as an amateur and as a professional in thee major sports, track and field, football and baseball. He left behind a legacy of superior athletic ability and good sportsmanship. Even when he was stripped of his Olympic gold medals, he continued to show the world that it wasn't about winning or medals, but was instead about teamwork."

Jim Thorpe - All American Director: Michael Curtiz Screenplay By: Everett Freeman Starring: Burt Lancaster – Jim Thorpe Charles Bickford – Pop Warner Jim Thorpe's Story Jim the boy: Jim Thorpe was born in an Indian territory in Oklahoma to parents of Sac and Fox ancestry. Thorpe’s original Native American name was Wa-tho-huck ("Bright Path"). As a young boy Jim was forced to attend a “white man’s” school that had recently opened up near his family’s reservation. Jim was reluctant to go to school and would have liked to spend all his time in the great outdoors. Even as a child Jim’s athletic ability was able to shine through. Though Jim was reluctant to attend school, his father prepared him at a young age that the times for the Indians were changing and Jim would need his education further down the road. Jim went on to finish his primary schooling and to further his education Jim headed to Carlisle Indian School to begin his work on a college education.

Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Resolution submitted to Senate Mr. SANTORUM. Mr. President, I rise today to submit a resolution recognizing Jim Thorpe as the Athlete of the Century. Born to an impoverished family on Sac-and-Fox Indian land, Jim Thorpe overcame adverse circumstances to excel as an amateur and as a professional in three sports; track and field, football and baseball. Thorpe, who was voted 'Athlete of the First Half of the Century' by the Associated Press almost fifty years ago, is the only American athlete ever to excel at this level in three major sports. As a student at Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania, Thorpe proved his athletic ability early on. One anecdote recalls how the 5-foot-9 1/2 inch, 144-pound Thorpe almost single-handedly overcame the entire Lafayette track team at a meeting in Easton, Pennsylvania, winning six events. Also while attending the Carlisle Indian School, Jim Thorpe established his amateur football record playing halfback, defender, punter, and place-kicker. In 1911, he was named an All American. In 1912, he represented the United States and the Sac-and-Fox Nation in the Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. To this day, Thorpe is the only athlete to win gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon. After his Olympic feats in Sweden, Thorpe returned to Carlisle's football team and was named an All-American again.

"The creators of Crazy Horse's Vision (2000) offer another inspiring American portrait, again focusing on their subject's youth and extraordinary accomplishments. Dubbed Wa-tho-huck (Bright Path) by his Pottowatomie mother, Thorpe attended several Indian schools, struggling with academics but finding his path in sports, and emerging as the 20th century's most widely gifted. . .athlete. Nelson switches to a less-stylized, mystical look for the illustrations, depicting Thorpe growing from lad to burly manhood, chasing down a jackrabbit, standing downcast at lonely or sad moments, dashing past rival runners or football players as he flashes a faint restrained smile. Finished with a career recap, plus a discussion of the long effort to restore Thorpe's confiscated medals. . . .young readers in need of a role model could hardly do better."

James Francis Thorpe accomplished without argument what no other athlete in history has. The Sac and Fox Indian won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon in the 1912 Olympic games in Sweden and played both professional football and professional baseball. His feats on the football field put him on the 1911 and 1912 All-American football teams. In 1920 he became the first president of the American Professional Football Association (later to become the NFL). In 1951, he was one of the first men to be admitted to the National Football Foundation’s Hall of Fame. At the Olympic Games at Stockholm, Sweden, in 1912, Jim Thorpe performed the dazzling accomplishment of winning both the five-event pentathlon and ten-event-decathlon, an achievement that had never ever been performed by an athlete. King Gustav of Sweden presented the winners their gold medals. When it was Thorpe’s turn, he draped the medal about his shoulders and said, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world." 4 But being an in the Amateur Athletic Union, he played professionally, and therefore received money. Due to this, the International Olympic Committee stripped Jim of his medals, ordered him to return them, and erased his name from the official Olympic records. In 1915, Jim began to play professional football for the Canton Bulldogs, located in Canton, Ohio. A year later, through his skills developed at Carlisle, he led the Bulldogs to a national championship. He also managed professional baseball, but he did not achieve the great accomplishments as he did in football, so he slowly stopped and concentrated on football. By 1924, at the age of 37, his football skills finally began to fade as a star. He eventually stopped in 1927. He played for a few minutes at the crowd’s request and that was it. The wire service at this game stated, "Jim Thorpe played a few minutes for the Cardinals, but was unable to get anywhere. In his forties and muscle-bound, Thorpe was a mere shadow of his former self." 5
