Jim Thorpe was born in Indian Territory that is now Oklahoma in 1888 with the name Wa-tho-huck, which means Bright Path. He was part Sac and Fox indian, with some French and Irish also. In 1904 he enrolled at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was here that his athletic abilities were developed. He became a star on the school's track and football teams. He was named to the All-American Football Team twice, but his greatest achievements came during the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, Sweden. At the Olympics, he won two gold medals, in the most physically demanding events there were - the five-event Pentathlon and the ten-event Decathlon. He not only won these events, but his performance caused King Gustav V of Sweden to say to him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."

After his brother's death, his parents sent him to Haskell Institute where Jim was introduced to baseball and football. Jim was at Haskell when his mother died. James Francis Thorpe or Wa-tho-huck in his Native American name which means "bright future", would have a bright future indeed. He would go on to make accomplishments in all of football, baseball and track and field. In 1907, his first year at Carlisle Indian School, the young Thorpe displayed remarkable skills in football and track and gained the attention of Pop Warner, then Carlisle's coach of these sports. Thorpe performed his amazing talent on the varsity football team, but in 1909 he withdrew from the school and went to North Carolina. There he worked as a farmhand and played semiprofessional baseball. Born to Native American parents Thorpe impressed his coach (Pop Warner) at the Carlisle Indian school in 1907 by excelling in both track and football. After a brief two year hiatus Thorpe returned to Carlisle in 1911 and 1912 to become an All-American in both seasons. At the Olympic Games of 1912 Thorpe won the title as the World's Greatest Athlete winning both the pentathlon and decathlon and if that was not enough he then went on to play professional baseball for six seasons while organizing a pro football team from Canton, Ohio. In 1950 he was selected as the Athlete of the first half of the 20th century and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963. The offered jersey is of a dark brown wool knit retaining its original Spalding tag inside front tail.
