"Jim Thorpe was probably the greatest natural
athlete the world has seen in modern times."
The New York Times Book of Sports Legends(1991)
    edited by Joseph Vecchione.
Jim Thorpe of the Thunder Clan of the Sac and Fox Tribe, was born May 22, 1887, on the Sac and Fox Indian Reservation, Prague, Oklahoma.
In writing for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Whit Canning reported that Thorpe was the son of Hiram and Charlotte Thorpe, his Indian - name Wa-Tho-Huk - meant "Bright Path." He wrote that Thorpe had been a twin but that his brother Charlie died of pneumonia when Thorpe was 9. He also lost both of his parents when he was a teenager.
In the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm Jim won both the pentathlon and the decathlon.
Reporting for the New York Herald Tribune in 1953, Red Smith wrote that in the pentathlon, Jim had won the broad jump, the 200-meter hurdles, the discus throw, 1,500 meter run and was third in the javelin. In the decathlon he was first in the high hurdles, the shotput, the high jump and the 1,500. He had also been third in the 100 meters, the discus, the pole vault and the broad jump. He also placed fourth in the 400 meters and the javelin. He had come back from Stockholm with a reportedly $50,000 worth of trophies. A month after his return the Amateur Athletic Union filed charges of professionalism against him because he had played summer baseball with the Rocky Mount Club in the Eastern Carolina Leagues. Even though it had been for a small amount of money he had been stripped of his medals and his trophies sent back to Stockholm. His medals were returned posthumously on October 13, 1982.

    Jim Thorpe
Jim Thorpe, the greatest athlete of the century, has been described as being one of the most naturally gifted althletes to have ever lived. In his article "The Natural", Nicholas Lemann tells the story of how Thorpe first got into track and field while attending the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania. At the school the students were trained in manual trades and then sent out in the summers to live with and work for farmers in the surrounding area. Thorpe had been in the program for apprentice tailors.
"...in the spring of 1907, Thorpe, dressed in overalls and work boots, is wandering across the Carlisle campus with a group of friends from the tailors program. They pass the field where the varsity track team is practicing the high jump. Thorpe shyly asks if he can have a try at clearing the bar, which is set at five foot nine. The guys on the track team snickering, say, Sure kid, try it. Whiz, over he goes. The next moring, Thorpe is summoned to the office of Pop Warner, Carlisle's human-bulldog track and football coach. "Boy you've just broken the school record!" Warner exclaims....The following summer Thorpe sails for the Olympics in Stockholm. Always reluctant to practice and so naturally gifted that he doesn't have to, he spends the voyage napping in a hammock rather than working out with the team."
In the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm Jim won both the pentathlon and the decathlon.

    26. Native Americans - JimThorpe
America. jim thorpe. ( popular name of (James Francis) thorpe) 1888 1953. Track and field athlete, football and baseball player.
    http://www.nativeamericans.com/JimThorpe.htm
Jim Thorpe ( popular name of (James Francis) Thorpe) 1888 1953 That fall Thorpe made the varsity football team, playing some and starting the next year at half-back. The Carlisle Indians played many of the best collegiate teams, even before Thorpe often beating such teams as Chicago, Harvard, Minnesota, Nebraska, Penn, Penn State, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse. Thorpe was given third team All-American status by Walter Camp in 1908. Following the spring of 1909, when he starred in track, Thorpe left the Carlisle school with two other students to go to North Carolina where they played baseball at Rocky Mount in the Eastern Carolina Association. Thorpe pitched and played first base for what he said was $15 per week. The next year he played for Fayetteville, winning 10 games and losing 10 games pitching and batting .236. These two years of paid performances in minor league baseball would later tarnish his 1912 amateur Olympic status. For two years Thorpe had a rather aimless life while not playing baseball, drifting from village to village in Oklahoma before a former teammate at Carlisle asked him to return to school. He did so in the fall of 1911. Thorpe had matured to almost six feet in height and 185 pounds and led Carlisle to outstanding football seasons in 1911 and 1912. In 1911, against Harvard's undefeated team under the renowned coach Percy Houghton, Thorpe kicked four field goals, two over 40 yards, en route to a stunning 18-15 victory. Carlisle lost only two games in 1911 and 1912, splitting with Penn and Syracuse, while conquering such teams as Army, Georgetown, Harvard, and Pittsburgh. In his last year he scored 25 touchdowns and 198 points and was named All-American by Walter Camp for the second consecutive year.

Information on Thorpe's place of birth, date of birth and full name vary widely. What is known is that he was born in Indian territory , but no birth certificate has been found. According to the findings of Bill Mallon (see references ), Thorpe was born on May 28, 1887 (other sources state 1888) on an Indian reservation near the town of Bellemont, Oklahoma (not Prague, Oklahoma , as often seen). His full name is often said to be James Francis Thorpe , but this cannot be confirmed; "Jacobus Franciscus Thorpe" is the name on his christening certificate.

Site Map Jim Thorpe - one of the World's Greatest Athletes On Prairie Avenue, just north of Rosecrans Street, there is a park called Jim Thorpe Park. That is because Thorpe lived in Hawthorne during the late 1940s and was, at one time, considered by many "the Greatest Athlete in the World." Thorpe excelled in virtually every sport, playing football, basketball, baseball, and participating in track and field. He had numerous major feats, especially in football and track. In track and field, Thorpe participated in the pentathlon and decathlon and swept gold medals in both of those in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. In the decathlon, Thorpe broke the World record which stood until 1928. Thorpe also stood out in football, playing first at the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. During the 1911 and 1912 seasons, his outstanding rushing ability guided Carlisle to big wins over then powerhouses Army (West Point, New York), University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. He was a three-time All-American, including first-team in his final two seasons. For much of the time, Thorpe was know for his track and field ability but decided to try out for the Carlisle football team, head coached by the legendary Pop Warner, in the fall of 1907 when he was 20 years old. He borrowed a uniform that was two sizes too big. The players chuckled but Warner had him take the uniform off because he did not want the track and field standout to get hurt. Later, though, Warner tossed Thorpe the football and had him do some tackling practice. From there, he took off being a third-team All-American player in the 1908 season.

Describing Jim Thorpe as a great athlete would be doing him a severe injustice. A better description would be calling him the greatest athlete of the 20th Century. This label will probably be debated by many, but Thorpe's accomplishments speak louder than words. King Gustav V of Sweden told Thorpe: "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."
James Francis Thorpe was born on May 28, 1887 in a one-room cabin in Oklahoma. Although there is much confusion on Thorpe's date of birth, this is the date according to his estate. His very existence was an excellent representation of the melting pot that was America. He had some French and Irish blood but he was of mostly Sac and Fox Indian heritage. His Indian name, Wa-Tho-Huk, translated to "Bright Path", something that Thorpe definitely had ahead of him.
The career biography of Jim Thorpe reads like an encyclopedia of sports, encompassing virtually every major athletic event available. In the 1912 Olympic Games, he won both the pentathlon and decathlon events. In the same year, he led his Carlisle Indian School team to the national collegiate championship, scoring 25 touchdowns and 198 points. Following the college football season, Thorpe went on to play 6 years of Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, he managed to lead the Canton Bulldogs football team to unofficial world championships in 1916, 1917, and 1919. When he eventually finished his playing days in 1928 with the Chicago Cardinals, Jim Thorpe had become an athletic attraction that crowds flocked to see. Thorpe died on March 28, 1953.

Thorpe's athletic achievements at the collegiate level were at the Carlisle Indian Institute in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, which competed against the major universities of the time. Besides his accomplishments in football, he was a one-man track team and excelled in basketball, lacrosse, baseball and all other sports he attempted. He also won a national ballroom dancing contest. He was voted the greatest football player and the greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th century.
Sports historian Murray Olderman called him the "greatest all-around athlete in the history of sports, dating back to Coreobus of Elis in the eighth century before the birth of Christ." "Football will never see another Thorpe. The two or more platoon system produces defensive players who don't know how to carry the ball or famous offensive players who don't know how to block or tackle. There's been only one all time , All-American football player and his name is Jim Thorpe." - Jim Wood, Rochester Jeffersons. "He blocked with his shoulder and it felt like he hit you with a 4 x 4."

Jim Thorpe Photo Information page. A Dedication Jim Thorpe bears a unique place in history and his legacy lives on. Regardless of whether or not we are satisfied with the various millennium rankings touted by news and sports organizations, we can be proud of the legacy he leaves. The most telling testament to that legacy is the eloquence with which his descendants continue his story. This page is dedicated to Grace, Gail, Jack and Bill Thorpe, and their relatives who continue to keep him alive in all of our hearts. It's sometimes a good thing to be able to look critically at the history that was Carlisle, but it's always a good thing to experience the magic of what Jim Thorpe brought to Carlisle. Thank you for your tireless efforts on behalf of your dad, and Carlisle.
    With great respect
