Minnesota Vikings - Joe Chiarella
The team's 8-man draft class has been supplemented with a number of highly rated undrafted free agents who have very good chances of making the team. The Vikings' final roster should easily contain one dozen rookies.
A summary of the rookie class' impact on the composition of the 2004 Vikings follows:
In closing, I was very disappointed with ESPN's coverage in general and specifically their coverage (or non-coverage) of the Vikings. Also, the league did a very nice tribute to Pat Tillman. A classy move would be to waive the Hall of Fame waiting period and add him to this year's induction class. back to top

Minnesota All-American Ben Hamilton
by David Smale
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Ben Hamilton is an offensive lineman. That tells you all you need to know about how much recognition he gets.
Not this offensive lineman, because he found the recognition offensive.
"It was a real hard decision for me," he said. "People were telling me this was a legitimate honor and a classy honor. They told me it was separate from the Playboy bunnies and stuff like that, and rationalized why I should be a part of it.
Scott Studwell, the player personnel coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, describes Hamilton as "intelligent" and "diligent."
But more important is the character issue. While some felt he would be jeopardizing his pro aspirations by turning down the Playboy honor, others feel it could benefit him, including Studwell.
Hamilton does have hopes of playing professional football just like his father, Wes, a former third-round pick who played for the Minnesota Vikings from 1976-85. But Ben is listed by many publications as a potential first-round selection.
He picked up the attitude at home, where he was raised by Christian parents. He accepted Jesus as his Savior at age 8. He was active in his youth group through junior high and high school. He also attended the FCA Huddle at his school. He attends his college Huddle on occasion and recently spoke at an FCA Camp, but he is more active in Athletes in Action.

(April 25, 2002) Frank Gilliam, a top personnel man for most of his 31 years as an executive with the Minnesota Vikings , is retiring amid a reorganization of the team's front office. Rob Brzezinski will become vice president of football operations, the Vikings announced. The position was held by former head coach Dennis Green until his dismissal in January. Scott Studwell was promoted to director of college scouting. Gilliam, 68, will retire when his contract expires May 31, but will continue working with the team for the next two years as senior consultant for player personnel primarily as an evaluator of college talent. "This is a mutual agreement between the club and me," Gilliam said in a news release provided by the team. "The Vikings have offered me the opportunity to stay on as a consultant and I look forward to remaining active in that role." Gilliam joined the Vikings in 1971 and became vice president of player personnel in 1994. He gained a league-wide reputation as an astute talent evaluator and was instrumental in selecting several of the Vikings' key players over the past few years, including receiver Randy Moss and tackles Korey Stringer and Todd Steussie AP NEWS

    Can Raiders end Denver's dominance?
    By Gordon Forbes
    Special to NFL.com
(Editor's Note: He has been writing about the NFL since 1967, has covered 33 Super Bowls, and in 1988 was presented with the Dick McCann Award by the Pro Football Writers of America for distinguished reporting. Long-time USA Today columnist Gordon Forbes looks at this weekend's top games in an exclusive weekly column for NFL.com.) (Nov. 2, 2001) Here's a look at the best of Week 8: Denver Broncos (4-3) at Oakland Raiders (5-1) Players and coaches have come and gone, but even after seven consecutive Broncos victories, this rivalry lives on. Since 1995, when Denver hired Mike Shanahan as head coach, the Broncos are 11-1 against Al Davis and the AFC West rival they love to hate. For many of those years, the Raiders lacked stability at quarterback and in the head coach's office, but now quarterback Rich Gannon is at the top of his game. Young Jon Gruden, the Raiders' third coach since '95, can match moves with Shanahan and has better depth. While the Broncos' once-feared running game isn't what it used to be, the Raiders can turn loose underrated Charlie Garner and may get Tyrone Wheatley back from a knee injury. Oakland has injury problems on the offensive line, but Broncos quarterback Brian Griese still is bothered by an aching right shoulder and clearly misses injured wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, an old Raider killer.

Monday September 29, 2003 FIRST ANNUAL SETHSPEAKS AWARDS NL Manager of the Year AL Manager of the Year NL Rookie of the Year ... NFL “EXPERTS” PICKS AND THE WINNERS ARE… As promised on Friday , today, I will be announcing my 2003 Major League Baseball Award Winners . Last week, I gave out my Gold Glove choices . Today, I will announce my Managers of the Year, Rookies of the Year, and Cy Young Award choices. I lied a little bit though. I am going to wait until tomorrow to name my, maybe controversial MVP Award winners. I will also give out a couple other awards at that time, so be sure to check back tomorrow. These are some absolutely difficult decisions. I don’t envy the voters who have to develop their ideas of what each means, sift through the statistics, and make their choices. So, without further ado, here are my award winners: National League Manager of the Year Felipe Alou San Francisco Giants Jack McKeon Florida Marlins Dusty Baker Chicago Cubs Felipe Alou is the 2003 SethSpeaks National League Manager of the Year . Trader Jack McKeon is getting highly touted as the front-runner for this award, but I think that what Felipe Alou has done in San Francisco this year is amazing. If there is a one-man offensive team, it is the Giants, but somehow, Alou led the Giants to 100 wins. He fit good, but not exceptional, pieces around Barry Bonds (the likes of Grissom, Cruz, Durham, Alfonso, etc.). He had Jason Schmidt and Kirk Reuter, but also got solid performances from youngsters Jerome Williams and Jesse Foppert (as well as Damion Moss and Kurt Ainsworth, who wnet to the Orioles in a trade deadline deal for Sidney Ponson). Oh, and he didn’t have his closer, Trevor Hoffman, the whole year.
