DEION SANDERS SAYS GOODBYE: Former Football player leaves pre-game show.
Deion Sanders and The NFL Today cast from the 2003 season (May. 14, 2004) *Neon Deon is giving up the limelight yet again. Apparently he wants to finally take a rest from the public eye. Deon Sanders, the only person to play in the World Series and the Super Bowl, is leaving CBS' "NFL Today" after only two seasons with the pregame show. Sanders, a seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback during a 12-year NFL career, joined the program as a contributor in 2001. For the past two seasons, he has been a studio analyst, along with Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason and Jim Nantz. On the other side, a more personal note, last Friday, May 7, the former athlete failed to show up for court and a judge ruled against him in an auto repairs dispute. Sanders may have to pay more than $5,000 after the judge ruled in favor of an auto-body shop for an unpaid paint job and repairs made in 2000 to Sanders' 1985 Mercedes convertible, reports the Associated Press. The unpaid bill is $4,420, plus Judge Juan Jasso tacked on the attorney fees for Ralph Castro, owner of All Pro Collision of Dallas, in the amount of $750, The Dallas Morning News reported Friday on its Web site.

Sanders announces retirement from NFL
Click here for more on this story Posted: Friday July 27, 2001 7:27 PM Updated: Saturday July 28, 2001 11:13 AM David Leeds/Allsport ASHBURN, Va. (AP) Backed into a corner, the world's flashiest cornerback made a very quiet exit. Deion Sanders retired from the NFL on Friday, striking a deal and cutting his losses rather than report to a Washington Redskins team he had disavowed. The announcement didn't come with any Prime Time flash or sentiment or any glowing words rather just as a one-paragraph announcement in which Redskins head coach Marty Schottenheimer told how events unfolded with Sanders' agent, Eugene Parker. "It was evident from his comments that Deion Sanders did not want to play football," Schottenheimer said. "With that understanding, both parties have reached a mutually beneficial agreement. Deion Sanders will retire as a National Football League player, and a financial agreement has been reached."

"I never wanted to be mediocre at anything. I wanted to be the absolute best," says Deion Sanders on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Deion Sanders is the only player to have appeared in a Super Bowl and World Series. For his first five seasons in the NFL, Deion Sanders played for the Atlanta Falcons, who dressed in black and white. Prime Time, Deion Sanders, caps off Hot Dogs theme week this Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Those colors fit him well. With Sanders, there are no shades of gray. Strutting into the end zone on a long return, he inspired just as many cheers on Sunday as he did critics on Monday. "Some people will come out to see me do well," he said. "Some people will come out to see me get run over. But love me or hate me, they're going to come out." Sanders is the only man to have played in a Super Bowl and a World Series. While nowhere near as proficient in baseball as he was in football, Sanders was an outstanding base stealer who was a mediocre hitter. Back to the NFL: In 1996 with the Dallas Cowboys he became the first regular starter on offense and defense in 34 years.

When he struts into the end zone on a long return for a touchdown, he inspires just as many cheers on Sunday as he does critics on Monday. There's no in-between. Two-way Deion Sanders was in on 50 percent of the offensive and 80 percent of the defensive plays for the Cowboys in 1996. "Some people will come out to see me do well," he said. "Some people will come out to see me get run over. But love me or hate me, they're going to come out." He is the only man to have played in a Super Bowl and a World Series. While nowhere near as proficient in baseball as he was in football, Sanders was an outstanding base stealer who was a mediocre hitter. In the NFL, in 1996 with the Dallas Cowboys he became the first regular starter on offense and defense in 34 years. But make no mistake. With six Pro Bowl selections as a cornerback, defense is where Sanders earns his big bucks. After he picked off 30 passes in his first six seasons, quarterbacks stopped throwing his way. It is often said Sanders dominates half the field with his mere presence. Between his talent and presence, Sanders earned back-to-back Super Bowl rings with the San Francisco 49ers and Cowboys.

    100 Greatest Players of All-Time
#8 Deion Sanders Deion Sanders, Cornerback
Florida State, 1985-1988 Deion Sanders was an obnoxious, self-promoting egomaniacal prima donna who rarely tackled anyone with any consistency. He elevated the art of trash talk to a nuclear level firing on anyone within ear shot and always bragging about how great he was. Deion Sanders was also the greatest corner to ever play college football. Florida State has been a who's who of sensational athletes over the years and no one has been better than Sanders with an amazing combination of speed, quickness and jumping ability. At just over 6-1 and 195 pounds, he ran a 4.3 40-yard-dash on a slow day and was the prototype corner. The college playmaker: As part of one of the great secondaries in college football history including such future NFL notables as Leroy Butler and Martin Mayhew, Sanders picked off 14 passes including three in bowl games. Mere stats don't come close to showing what kind of player he was as he simply shut down any of the receivers he covered handling some of the nation's best. He won the Jim Thorpe Award in 1988 as the nation's best defensive back. As good a college corner as Sanders was, he may have been just as good as a punt returner leading the nation in 1988 with a 15.2 yard per return average holding the FSU record with 1,429 career punt return yards and 503 in 1988. His signature return was against Clemson in the classic 1988 game taking a kick 76 yards for a touchdown.

'88 SS Deion announced his retirement from the Washington Redskins, NFL Division on July 17, 2001; currently, he is a Sports Analyst for CBS.
He is the only man in pro sports history to play both in a World Series (batting .533 Atlanta in 1992) and in the Super Bowl (victorious with San Francisco in 1994 and Dallas in 1995). Deion was drafted by Atlanta in the 1st round of 1989 (5th overall) and on Sept. 9, 1995, the Dallas Cowboys signed Deion to a long term contract. He was signed by Washington as a free agent June 6, 2000.
Deion is the only man in NFL history to have recorded both a pass reception (a 47 yarder, Super Bowl XXX) and interception (returned for 15 yards in Super Bowl XXIX). In 1996 he became the first two-way starter in the NFL since the Eagles Chuck Bednarik (1962). Deion is a 7-time Pro Bowl participant and 1994 Defensive Player of the Year. He has 41 career interceptions, 21 regular season TD's, and one playoff TD. Deion is second in the NFL history with eight career interception returns for TD's - trailing only Hall of Famer Ken Houston who has nine. As a runner, receiver, defender, punt returner and kickoff returner, Deion has gained an average of 16.9 yards every time he has touched the football in a NFL regular season game.
