Vikings DL John Randle ProFootballWeekly.com asks contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his views on the hottest topics in the NFL.
Everyone talks about the Baltimore, Miami and Tampa Bay defenses, but the Philadelphia defense has quietly given up very few points. The Eagles’ "D" ranks seventh overall in the league, fourth against the pass. The unit has allowed only three touchdowns through the air, third lowest in the league. And only one of their six opponents has thrown for more than 250 yards. Philadelphia ranks seventh in the NFL in sack percentage. The pass rush is led by DE Hugh Douglas (8 1/2 sacks) and rookie DT Corey Simon (five sacks), who rank second and fifth respectively in the league.
Vikings DL John Randle
With the change, Tony Williams and rookie Chris Hovan were able to start inside. Head coach Dennis Green credited the move for stopping the Bucs on many key third downs and holding them to only 63 yards rushing.
Steelers head coach Bill Cowher refused to discuss the specifics of his decision, but he did hint that the team must get the ball downfield more. Stewart eschewed the deep pass the last two weeks, relying mostly on safe, short throws or taking off running when his receivers were covered.

ARTISTS COMMENTS "This drawing of John Randle is simple, but effective. This depicts one of his pre-game rituals that has become legendary to football fans, and more specifically Viking fans. This future Hall of Famer puts on his black eye-paint, and runs around screaming at the top of his lungs trying to get in the right frame of mind, and at the same time pump up his teammates, and intimidate his opponents." SportsLine.com wire reports LAWRENCE, Kan. Bill Whittemore hit Mark Simmons for the go-ahead touchdown as Kansas fought from behind to beat Baylor 28-21 Saturday and avoid becoming the first Big 12 team to lose to the Bears at home. After John Randle's 12-yard TD run put Kansas (5-2, 2-1 Big 12) on top 28-14 with 8:47 to go, the Bears marched 80 yards in eight plays, capped by Aaron Karas' touchdown pass to Marques Roberts on third-and-goal from the 15. Baylor (3-4, 1-2) had one last shot but Banks Floodman intercepted Karas' pass deep in Bears territory with less than 2 minutes to play. Whittemore was 19-of-30 for 252 yards and two touchdowns and tied the school record with 15 scoring passes in a season. The Jayhawks took the lead with 12:33 left on Whittemore's 40-yard pass play to Simmons, who caught the ball on the 28, sidestepped two defenders and scored. The Jayhawks had scored 35 or more points in a school-record five straight games, but managed only one touchdown the entire first half until Whittemore connected with Charles Gordon on an 18-yard scoring pass with 1:12 to go.

Handle on Randle: Packers neutralize rush
By Bob McGinn
of the Journal Sentinel staff Dec. 22, 1996 Green Bay No sacks. Not even a single tackle. Irrepressible John Randle, regarded by some football insiders as the National Football League's greatest defensive tackle, was invisible Sunday in the Minnesota Vikings' 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. "He gave great effort," Vikings defensive line coach John Levra said. "He just didn't have it today." In September, Randle destroyed the Packers with two sacks, two forced fumbles and three tackles. "Today it was just one of those games where they were on rhythm," Randle said. "They played a great game." Sloppy footing and the Packers' inspired offensive line that plotted ways all week to control him contributed to the remarkable accomplishment. Randle is one of the NFL's special players regardless of surface but coach Dennis Green acknowledged the obvious by saying Randle was more dangerous on turf. "Sure, a guy who's 275 is a much better player on artificial turf," Green said. "But that doesn't mean he can't play on grass. I don't think he had much help today because our whole front didn't play as well." As the game wore on, the Packers were able to exploit the only chink in Randle's armor. On slow fields, teams that patiently utilize the running game can pound the ball at Randle behind combination blocks because he stands barely more than 6 feet tall and is lighter than virtually every starting guard and center in the league.

Corey Simon and the rest of our Sweet 16 wasted no time making their presence felt AS FAR AS ROOKIES WERE CONCERNED, the 2000 season was all about defensive linemen and running backs. While no quarterbacks or receivers had much of an impact, it was a terrific year for pass-rushers, run-stoppers, and the guys toting the ball. Not many teams would complain about a rookie running back who rushes for 1,000 yards, which is why the folks in Denver (with Mike Anderson) and Baltimore (Jamal Lewis) were so jubilant Ron Dayne of the New York Giants probably also would have reached 1,000 yards if he hadn't shared running duties with Tiki Barber. What's more, Sammy Morris was an all-purpose threat for Buffalo until getting hurt; he could solve the backfield woes the Bills have experienced since Thurman Thomas began to decline. Trying to stop such players-when they weren't rattling quarterbacks, that iswere five highly productive freshmen, including the Cleveland Browns' Courtney Brown, the top pick overall in the draft. While Brown was superb for a bad team, New Orleans Saints end Darren Howard was a factor on one of the finest defenses in the NFL. Philadelphia's Corey Simon was similar to Howard, although Simon operates inside, where he helped the Eagles defense look like it did in the Buddy Ryan days.
