July 25 ~  Gave His All Official Rules of the NFL
"I w a n t to be r e m e m b e r e d as the guy who gave his a l l whenever he was on the field." ~ Walter Payton Born on this day in Columbia, Mississippi, Chicago Bears great running back Walter Jerry Payton (1954-1999) had the nickname "Sweetness" for his disposition and his smooth running style. Called "the best football player I've ever seen" by his coach Mike Ditka , No. 34 was the NFL's all-time leading rusher, logging 16,726 yards in 3,838 attempts in his amazing 13-year career. "I want to set the record so high that the next person who tries for it, it's going to bust his heart ," Payton once said. Emmitt Smith broke Payton's record in October 2002. An unselfish player and a joy to watch play, Payton was a "high stepping" runner who had a unique way of carrying the football, palming the ball with one hand whenever he broke into the open. He'd punish the defense, initiating hits rather than avoiding them. If he couldn't break a tackle, he'd drag the defender with him. "I think of all the guys that I covered over the years, he was my favorite," praised broadcaster

Worthwhile Payton profile to air Sunday
May 14, 2004 BY JOHN JACKSON SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST
One of the most underrated sports shows is Fox Sports Net's ''Beyond the Glory,'' a documentary-style program that examines the lives on and off the field of some of the biggest names in sports. This weekend's show (airing Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in Chicago) profiles former Bears star Walter Payton , looking at his life from his childhood in Mississippi to his death in 1999 at 45. Several members of Payton's family and several former Bears players were interviewed for the show, and his son, Jarrett , serves as the narrator. Some Bears fans might be surprised to discover that Payton had little interest in football growing up in Columbia, Miss., and didn't take up the sport until his older brother, Eddie , went to college. Walter Payton made up for lost time and rushed for more than 16,000 yards in his 13-year NFL career. But those closest to Payton say it was more than just his ability on the field that made Chicagoans fall in love with ''Sweetness.'' ''People in Chicago recognized how genuine he was, and they adopted him,'' Eddie Payton said in the show. ''People in Chicago now think he's from Chicago and not Mississippi.''

News Resources Preview Review Cheats Endorsed by the late, great Chicago Bears star, Walter Payton Football is generally considered the best football game on the Sega Master System, and among the best of the entire 8-bit era. Choosing your team from the simulated NFL stored in the game (although no real names are used), you can challenge the computer or your friend to a match, or enter the tournament mode to go for the Super Bowl. The game's football field is shown from overhead, scrolling from left to right to follow the action. Each team has eight plays, half running and half passing. These plays hold both offensive and defensive characteristics. For example, if both teams choose the same play, then the defense will stop it easily and possibly sack the quarterback; however, if two totally different plays are chosen, then the offense will have an easier time passing off the ball and advancing yardage. During offensive play, you have control over the quarterback, as well as any players you pass the ball off to. On defense, you can choose freely which player you want to control before the play begins. Cinema scenes and halftime shows complete the solid package.

It's football time in Tennessee!!
Today was the season opener for my beloved Tennesee Volunteers, who played Wyoming. Only in college football can you have a game between Wyoming and Tennessee that is a home game for Wyoming, played in Nashville. Go figure. Favorite moments:
  • The announcer who said that one of the players always made a point of carrying an inspirational quote with him, and that for today's game, it was quote about how we "walk by faith, not by sight" by Walter Payton. Well, actually, it was Paul, in 2 Corinthians not Walter Payton. But close enough. Or something.
  • Another announcer talking about what a great experience it must be for players to come play in such a huge NFL stadium like the Nashville Coliseum, which holds almost 70,000 fans. UT fans, of course, were looking around thinking, "what a cute little stadium." (Neyland Stadium, where the Vols play in Knoxville, has a capacity of 104,079 seats.)
  • The final score: Tennessee: 47, Wyoming: 7.
Next week's game is against MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University), in another fine example of a smaller school's athletic department pimping its teams out to get whipped for money. Somehow I doubt this one will be on TV.

Pro Football Weekly historians remember Walter Payton
By Jim Campbell and Bob Carroll
Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999
Pro Football Weekly historians Jim Campbell and Bob Carroll took time Tuesday to give their thoughts on the career of the great Walter Payton. Jim Campbell says: "To me he was a throwback. He was what I remember pro football running backs being like when I was growing up, as far as the complete package. He could obviously run, but he could also pass, he could catch, he could block and he could probably play defense if he needed to. ... "I remember reading about him being touted as a Heisman candidate before his senior year in college. Almost anybody can be a Heisman candidate, but I thought for somebody coming from Jackson State to be mentioned with the Heisman, this guy has to be something special. And of course when he got to the NFL, he was more than something special. ... "His heart and desire are what separated him from the rest of the pack. He did not have the greatest natural ability, but his will to win was always there. ... "No one can ever question the heart, because there are too many film clips where he appears to be tackled and ends up getting 40 more yards. ...

Payton entered the NFL Hall of Fame as the all-time rushing leader
One of American football's most famous former players, Walter Payton, has died from a rare liver illness at the age of 45. Payton, who was the National Football League's all-time leading rusher, was awaiting a liver transplant after announcing in February that he was suffering from primary sclerosing cholangitis. Payton played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bears and ran for a career record 16,726 yards. He averaged 4.4 yards on 3,838 carries with 110 touchdowns. Payton announced in February he was suffering from a rare liver disease He also caught 492 passes for 4,538 yards and 15 scores. The player nicknamed "Sweetness" for his graceful and elusive moves set the NFL one-game rushing record of 275 yards against Minnesota in 1977. The Bears retired his jersey number, 34. Payton, who entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, rushed for a career-best 1,852 yards in the 1977 season and led the Bears to their only Super Bowl in 1985. He decided to go public about his illness in February after questions were asked about his jaundiced appearance and loss of weight.

93. Sports: Sweetness - A Tribute To Walter Payton
is a word that can describe only one man, walter payton. walter was one of the greatestrunning backs ever to grace the fields of the National football League.
http://www.teenink.com/Past/9900/January/Sports/Sweetness.html
" S weetness" is a word that can describe only one man, Walter Payton. Walter was one of the greatest running backs ever to grace the fields of the National Football League. He ran with determination, intensity and that special fire that burns bright in only a few people - the fire of a true winner.
Payton got the name "Sweetness" in college, when people used this word to describe an action that was good, just as we say "cool." He was practicing football and making some great cutback moves that would-be tacklers missed. One of his college teammates said he was constantly "sweet," so let's call him "Sweetness." This name stuck and he will always be remembered by it, by millions.
Walter Payton was not a man of great size, but he worked hard and became a Hall of Fame running back for the Chicago Bears. To make up for his small size, he put extra hours into conditioning, running, lifting and watching films to improve his game. He is now one of the top five running backs in total rushing yards of all-time. One of the highlights of his career happened in 1985 when he led the Chicago Bears to victory during the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. Walter didn't score a touchdown, but that didn't bother him; he knew there is no "I" in team.
When Walter Payton was inducted into the Hall of Fame, he didn't have a coach or other player induct him, he had his thirteen-year-old son. Walter was moved to tears when his son gave a heartfelt induction speech. His son is now a running back for the University of Miami, following in his father's footsteps, and also wearing number thirty-four. Many players are wearing thirty-four on their uniform in memory of the great Walter Payton. He was loved by all, admired by all, and now missed by all.

I consider Walter Payton to be one of my childhood heroes, primarily from his unparalleled feats on the football field and his "Never Die Easy" attitude as a Chicago Bear. This excellently written biography not only reaffirmed my childhood adolation, but added to my perspective of what a truly inspirational human being he was. His tireless efforts in charity, his down to earth charm and genuine love and respect for his fans, his legendary work ethic, his bold business ventures, and especially, his brave fight against the liver condition which claimed his life are all described brilliantly through his own observations as well as those closest to him. In short, this book convinced me that my childhood sports hero will always be an inspiration to me as an adult. I recommend this book and its powerful message to all readers, regardless of your familiarity with Mr. Payton. Thanks for giving so much, Walter, well miss you.

Sweetness ran and ran and ran
By Ron Flatter
Special to ESPN.com
"When I see him out there, it gives me goose bumps. Not the speediest, not the quickest, but he was [always] throwing his body at somebody. I think God looked down and said, 'Walter, you're going to play for 13 years, and you're going to miss one game. And they're going to beat you up and knock you down, and you're still going to get up and play," says Chicago Bears' Hall of Fame running back Gale Sayers about Walter Payton on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Walter Payton held the NFL's all-time rushing record for almost two decades. He broke Jim Brown's mark in 1984 and when he retired after the 1987 season, he had extended the record to 16,726 yards. Not until 2002, when Emmitt Smith rushed past him, was the man called "Sweetness" knocked down from the top spot in the record book. For Payton, the 16,726 yards not only signified the 9½ miles he ran for in 13 seasons, they also represented durability from a running back who enjoyed the physical contact of ducking his head and plowing into a defender just to get that extra yard. "If I'm going to get hit," Payton said, "why let the guy who's going to hit me get the easiest and best shot? I explode into the guy who's trying to tackle me."
