Fantasy football Team gear "It's his legs. He's got the strongest legs I've ever seen. They are like springs. . . . If he had played on good teams, oh my gosh, I can't imagine what he would have done." Bobby Beathard, 1984, The Sporting News
Walter Payton slideshow
Sweetness was an illusion nurtured by Chicago Bears fans who watched Walter Payton perform for 13 NFL seasons. Blurred by the 16,726 yards he piled up as the most prolific runner in football history were the thousands of bruises, headaches and battered egos he left on his record-setting trail of tears. There was nothing sweet about Paytons running style, which reflected hard work, hustle, enthusiasm and total effort. Every Payton run started with the trademark first-step burst that carried him into the hole, where he could accelerate to daylight or explode into a tackler with aggressive, punishing force. Every Payton run ended with the 5-10, 200-pounder grinding, scrapping, fighting, battling for one more yard. No one in history ran harder, play after play, and nobody did more with modest speed than the blue-collar star former Bears coach Mike Ditka called "the most complete football player I ever saw." Superbly conditioned, Payton also was an outstanding receiver and a threat to break open a game with the halfback pass, which he threw eight times for touchdowns. Need a block? Payton could deliver with the fierce drive of a fullback, a role he relished even more than his ball-carrying exploits. His powerful legs and sledgehammer arms were feared weapons, as was the delight he took in clearing a hole or protecting his quarterback.

Quotes on Payton "I think Walter's legacy will be that of a man with a God-given ability that got the most out of it at every possible chance. He did it with pride, he did it with dignity, he did it with respect for the game." brother Eddie Payton, Jackson State golf coach. "Walter exemplified class, and all of us in sports should honor him by striving to perpetuate his standard of excellence. The tremendous grace and dignity he displayed in his final months reminded us again why 'Sweetness' was the perfect nickname for Walter Payton." NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "He was the best football player I've ever seen, and probably one of the best people I've ever met." Mike Ditka, former Bears coach and current New Orleans coach. "Walter Payton was an inspiration to me by the way he carried himself on the field and off the field." Dallas running back Emmitt Smith, the NFL's career rushing touchdown leader. "Walter was a Chicago icon long before I arrived there. He was a great man off the field, and his on-the-field accomplishments speak for themselves." Chicago Bulls great Michael Jordan.

Sweetness ran and ran and ran
By Ron Flatter

Special to ESPN.com
It doesn't have the same ring to it as 755, but football fans might argue 16,726 should be just as significant as baseball's most hallowed career record. Payton carried the ball and ran for more yards than any running back in NFL history. That 16,726 is the number that quantifies "Sweetness." It's the career record for most yards rushing in the National Football League. "If I'm going to get hit," Payton said, "why let the guy who's going to hit me get the easiest and best shot? I explode into the guy who's trying to tackle me." Despite all this punishment, he missed only one game in his Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Bears. Not bad for a guy who predicted he would last only five years in the league. But he played for 13 seasons. And on Nov. 1, 1999, nearly 12 years after his retirement from football, Payton died of bile duct cancer that was discovered earlier in the year during treatment for a rare liver disease. He was 45. But on the football field, he seemed unstoppable and he knew it. Tacklers had difficulty stopping those hard-pounding legs, those runs in which his knees never looked like they were bending, the changes in direction, the bursts through the lines, the overpowering collisions.

Those "SWEET" Memories
Fans remember Payton. Walter Payton fought his battle with his Liver disease with the same amount of courage and dignity as he played the game. If you would like to have your favorite memories of "Sweetness" posted in this tribute to the Greatest Running Back ever to play the game of football, please write to ChitownSportsDen@aol.com .. Limit your memories to 9 or 10 lines. Thank You, and Thank You Walter Payton. Jerry from Atlanta I wasn't a Chicago Bear Fan, but I truely had deep respect for Walter Payton. He seemed to be such a humble man. He never felt the need to be standing in the spotlight. Many of today's athlete's should take notice. He made himself into a GREAT football player through determination and burning desire. What a role model he was, in a world that has so few of them. Goodbye Walter. My condolensces go out to his family, and all the fans of Chicago. He will be missed, but NEVER forgotten. Walter Payton all through my life always personified undying effort and perserverance, and in the tough times of my life, (which we all have) i was always inspired by his will, dicipline, and drive , to hang in there, he was a tremendous inspiration to me and countless others

51. Walter Payton Cancer Fund: Biography
walter payton, NFL Hall of Fame football player, was born in Columbia, Mississippi, the son of Peter payton, a factory worker, and Alyne payton.
http://www.payton34.org/bio.cfm
Walter Payton Biography Walter Payton, NFL Hall of Fame football player, was born in Columbia, Mississippi, the son of Peter Payton, a factory worker, and Alyne Payton. Walter, or "Spider Man" as he called himself as a boy, was active in Boy Scouts, the church choir, camping with friends, and playing drums in the band before he finally turned to football his junior year in high school at the all-black Jefferson High School. Already bigger and stronger than most of his teammates, Walter was an instant starter. Halfway through his junior year at Jefferson, the all-white Columbia High School was ordered to integrate, and Payton and several of his teammates transferred there. They were upset, however, when a white coach, Tommy Davis, was hired for the Columbia job instead of their Jefferson coach, Charles Boston. Already socially conscious at the age of sixteen, Payton boycotted spring practice that year to express his dissatisfaction, but, recognizing that the decision would not change, he joined the team for the start of his senior season. Payton led his Columbia team to an 8-2 record that year and was named All State. But with just one year at the school and two years of high school football, he was not heavily recruited. He attended nearby Jackson State University, where he joined a team that featured a number of other future NFL players and Pro Bowlers, including Jerome Barkham, Vernon Perry, Ricky Young, Robert Brazille, and fellow Hall of Famer Jackie Slater. At Jackson State, Payton rushed for 3,563 yards, achieving a 6.1 average per rushing attempt, and became the NCAA's all-time leading rusher with 65 touchdowns. He majored in communications and graduated in 1975.

Our family created the Walter Payton Cancer Fund to bring new exuberance to the quest for a cure for cancer." Walter lived his life and fought his disease with passion, idealism, and determination. His family now urges fans to continue fighting cancer in Walter's honor. The Walter Payton Cancer Fund provides a unique opportunity for fans to honor the memory of a national sports hero and change the face of cancer.

Harvey Frommer's Sports Book Review by Harvey Frommer Title: "Never Die Easy: The Autobiography of Walter Payton"
Author: Walter Payton with Don Yaeger
    Publisher: Random House
    Pages: 264
Price: $24.95 This is one of the saddest and at the same time one of the most uplifting sports books to come around in a long time. Walter Payton and Don Yaeger had planned the standard as-told-to sports autobiography, but it became something much different and very special when the greatest running back in football history was struck down by a rare liver disease. "Never Die Easy" tells the story of a man who died much too soon. The book was changed so that Payton's story could be told through his voice but also 25 others: his wife, children, brother and sister and the people in football who knew him best Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary, Jim McMahon, Franco Harris, Matt Suhey, John Madden and even the legendary Jim Brown, whose career rushing record Payton shattered. The title of the book comes from a saying of Payton's college coach: "Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make the linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It's OK to lose, to die, but don't die without trying, without giving it your best."
