He was called Sweetness, but to defenders Walter Payton was anything but. He was an unstoppable force running with the ball, he had great hands as a receiver out of the backfield, and he could throw a devastating block that would knock defenders out of their socks. He also seemed to have a sixth sense for picking up the blitz. Walter Payton was the type of blocker that could lay out a defender coming through a hole in the line just like a linebacker mowing down a running back. Walter's biggest assets on the field were his leg strength and incredible balance. He could run over a would-be tackler with the force of a freight train. Or he might simply hit a defender hard enough to bounce off, and around him. He also had a straight arm that could take a defender off his feet and send him sliding across the turf on his facemask.

Posted: Tuesday November 02, 1999 05:08 PM Walter Payton was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1993. AP CHICAGO (AP) Walter Payton, the NFL's greatest rusher whose aggressive style masked a playful temperament that earned him the nickname "Sweetness," died Monday at age 45. Payton died of bile duct cancer that was discovered during his treatment earlier this year for primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disease. Payton rushed for 16,726 yards in his 13-year career, one of sport's most awesome records. And Barry Sanders ensured it would be one of the most enduring, retiring in July despite being just 1,458 yards shy of breaking Payton's mark. "I want to set the record so high that the next person who tries for it, it's going to bust his heart," Payton once said.

Walter Payton's physical style of play made his durability an incredible accomplishment. He missed just one game his entire thirteen-year NFL career, which can be credited to his fantastic physical conditioning and work ethic. He didn't work out with his teammates in the off-season, but he always came into training camp in better shape than anyone else. He had a very disciplined training regiment that included running steep hills located near his home. No doubt this type of training helped develop the leg strength and quick burst that helped him break away from defenders. Walter Payton was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1975 out of Jackson State. He ran for 679 yards his rookie year and at least 1200 yards in ten out of the next eleven seasons. In 1977 he had a career high of 1852 yards with his average yards per carry at 5.5. He also scored fourteen touchdowns.

    Payton, Walter (Jerry)
Payton, 1987 AP/Wide World Photos (b. July 25, 1954, Columbia, Miss., U.S.), American professional football player who set the standard of productivity and durability for running backs. Payton played football in high school and at Jackson State University, Miss., from which he graduated in 1975. He was drafted by the National Football League (NFL) Chicago Bears in 1975. Payton played with the Bears until his retirement after the 1987 season, filling the position of halfback for most of that time. In his 12 years as a professional football player, Payton was perhaps the greatest running back in the history of the game. He set the records for total career rushing yardage (16,726 yards), most combined career yards gained (rushing and pass receiving; 21,803 yards), most seasons with 1,000 or more yards rushing (10), most yards gained in a single game (275 yards), most games with 100 or more yards gained in a career (77), and most career touchdowns earned by rushing (110). Besides being football's all-time leading rusher, Payton was a capable blocker, pass receiver, and passer. He started in more than 130 consecutive games in his career.

With his movie-star good looks, his genuine humility, and his championship rings, Aikman would appear to be a dream come true for Madison Avenue marketeers, who would like to package and sell him as an urban cowboy for the masses, an iconic heartthrob from the heartland clad in blue jeans and boots. The quarterback, however, is uncomfortable with the adulation he receives and wary of the merchandising that currently accompanies fame in professional sports. "You know, I wish there was a switch I could flip, where no one knows me," he confessed to Jill Lieber in an interview for Sports Illustrated (February 15, 1993). "And then, when I'm ready to make a splash, I'd flip the switch and say, Hey, I'm ready now.' Unfortunately, that doesn't happen."
