Fantasy Report
Fantasy Football: NFL Week 12 Breakdown
By John Wick and Brian Scrobel
Special to Packer Plus Nov. 13, 1996 To be successful in fantasy football, you must have the ability to always remain objective, keep your emotions in check and not allow yourself to become stubborn. Players that have burned fantasy owners in the past are left in the doghouse and are sometimes never brought out again. How long did Vinny Testaverde last in your draft? How long did the owner who drafted Vinny take to insert him into the starting lineup? Even after solid fantasy games early in the year, fantasy coaches could not pull the trigger and insert him as their starting QB. Why? Because of the not-so-distant past, coaches waited for him to put up big numbers. Week after week, frustration leads to anger and then to the doghouse. That is why it took so long to get Testaverde into the lineup. Other players that were in the same boat last year and are now contributing are Jerome Bettis and Shannon Sharpe. It is too late for you to make up for passing on them this year, but you can avoid sending too many players to the doghouse down the stretch. Players like Anthony Miller, Quinn Early, Isaac Bruce and O.J. McDuffie have broken more than one heart but have either come on or have too much talent to be left out of lineups.
WEEK 12 BREAKDOWN
New Orleans at Atlanta Normally this one would be an air affair, but Jamal Anderson and Ray Zellars could steal the show. Jim Everett is struggling. His only reliable hookup has been Michael Haynes (2 TDs and a 2-point conversion in the last two games). Zellars will attack a defense that just allowed 279 yards rushing. Bobby Hebert still spreads the ball around, just not in the end zone. J.J. Birden is the only Falcon to score other than Anderson in the last two weeks.

Fantasy Football: Grading clubs at midpoint
By John Wick and Brian Scrobel
Special to Packer Plus Oct. 23, 1996 Coming out of the draft, most owners and general managers liked their fantasy teams. Some started the trash talking early, asking if they could take the championship trophy home with them. Halfway through the NFL season, these same owners and GMs are sitting back and re-evaluating their teams performance to date. The owner that drafted Steve Young, Chris Warren, Mark Chmura and Eric Metcalf had to be an early favorite. But as ESPNs Chris Berman says, "That's why they play the games." After an early-season injury to Young, and sub-par performances from Warren, Chewy and Metcalf, the once-confident owner is actively seeking trades and combing the waiver wire. That's the beauty of fantasy football. Since we're almost at mid-season, it's time to evaluate the Packer Plus Fantasy Football League. There has been very little trading, although the action on the waver wire has been hot. Here are the progress reports, with teams in order of how they picked in the draft:
Len Kasper, 4th place, 304 points

*** DOLPHINS NEWS *** Jul 28, 1999: McDuffie Signs Extention
** McDuffie Signs 4 Year Extension WR OJ McDuffie has signed a 4 year contract extension with the Dolphins that may turn out to be worth as much as $20 million, according to various news reports that surfaced today. The Dolphins have officially announced that McDuffie has signed the extension that will keep him dressed in Aqua and Orange through 2004, but have not announced any terms. However, a variety of reports say that McDuffie's total package is worth about $3.3 million per year for each year of his 6 year contract. According to JJ, that package will not provide the Dolphins will much cap relief this year, but will guarantee that the Dolphins' most productive receiver from the past several years will stay in Miami. ** All Draft Picks Sign The Dolphins officially announced today that they have signed all of their draft picks to deals varying between 3 and 4 years. James Johnson and Rob Konrad, both 2nd round picks, have each signed 4 year deals worth $2.65 and $2.45 million respectively.

Not Guilty!
With the exception of some Pennsylvania-Dutch town, you could not go anywhere in the past year and a half without hearing about O.J. Simpson and the "Trial of the Century." Well the trial finally came to an end, and O.J. walked away an innocent man. If it was up to me that would be the end of the matter, but still you can't go anywhere, even the Pennsylvania Dutch debate about it now, without hearing somebody give his or her opinion on the verdict. So I'm gonna join in on the fun and throw out a couple of my opinions and then drop the issue for good.
When people think of the Dream Team nowadays they think of the Simpson defense team of Robert Shapiro, Johnny "Crazy Legs" Cochran, and F. Lee Bailey. Now that is a pretty good group, but they do not compare to the real Dream Team, the American men's basketball squad in the 1992 Olympics. Sure F. Lee Bailey is a threat from long distance, but can he dish the pill as well as Stockton? And we all know Robert Shapiro is a monster in the paint, but can he really contain Ewing and Robinson? But that is not the main difference between the two Dream Teams. The original Dream Team went overseas, blew out other countries, won respect, and brought home glory and a gold medal for America. The newest Dream Team stayed in Los Angeles, polarized its own country, lost respect, and brought home glory and lucrative book and movie deals for themselves.
I really hate how everybody says that the reason O.J. got off is because he was black and a famous football player. That's not true, the reason he got off is because he acted white, was extremely rich, and everybody liked him. Let's not kid ourselves, if it was Jim Brown in O.J.'s place he would have been sent to the gallows after a trial that lasted three days tops. Jim Brown was mean and bitter, O.J. was nice and happy. Jim Brown never forgot his roots, O.J. was a traitor to his race. Jim Brown lived modestly, O.J. lived lucratively. But Jim Brown was a bad actor and O.J. was a good actor, and that is why Jim Brown was hated by many, and O.J. Simpson loved by more. So for now O.J. is back in his rich white neighborhood turning tragedy into a pay-per-view special, and Jim Brown is still in South Central Los Angeles turning ex gang members into decent human beings.
