Carnell Lake Dorsey Levens Brady Smith Cory Raymer Jim Marshall ProFootballWeekly.com contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum and editor-in-chief Ron Pollack answer questions about the NFL's hottest topics.
Carnell Lake's foot injury
Another day, another bit of bad injury news for the Jaguars. Still unable to go full speed because of a nagging foot injury, Jaguars safety Carnell Lake will miss at least the season opener. Lake made the Pro Bowl last season despite playing with an injury Ñ a broken bone in his left foot near the ankle Ñ that made every motion painful. "Backpedaling, coming forward, simple stuff, would almost bring me to tears some games,'' he said in an interview with the Florida Times-Union last month. ``I would plant, and my foot would just give. I'd be shaking.'' PFW: How much will Carnell Lake's foot injury impact the Jaguars? Buchsbaum: It depends how deep into the season they have to go without him and how rusty he is. PFW: This foot injury has been bothering him for awhile now. What is the difference between the Carnell Lake we see now and the Carnell Lake we saw during his prime?

To hear it from Coach Bill Snyder, Marshall isn't a good football team. They're great. Greater than its 1-2 record, at least. "Bob (Pruett) has done an amazing job," Snyder said. "I can't tell you about the program past the last ten years, but I'm well-aware of what a tremendous football team and program they have, and the quality and talent of the players." The winningest program in the 1990's, the Thundering Herd were coached by Jim Donnan from 1990 to 1995, during which time Marshall won 64 games and a Division I-AA National Championship. When Donnan moved on to Georgia, Coach Bob Pruett took the reins and Marshall didn't lose a step. The program that, in 1970, lost 75 players, coaches, administrators and fans in a tragic plane crash, won yet another National Championship. Pruett's title in 1996 was enough to encourage Marshall boosters that the program was ready for the next step, and in 1997 the Herd moved to Division-I status.

Elway, Sanders highlight four new inductees
By Kevin Paul Dupont, Globe Staff, 2/1/2004 HOUSTON One passer, perhaps as pure a runner as the NFL has ever seen, and two punishers (one purple). All four of them were named here yesterday to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. ADVERTISEMENT John Elway, Barry Sanders, Bob Brown, and Carl Eller, the Class of 2004, all will be formally inducted this summer in the Canton, Ohio, shrine. "It still takes time to sink in," said Elway, the winningest quarterback in NFL history who retired following his Super Bowl MVP performance five years ago in the Broncos' second straight championship. "You never want to picture yourself here until you're here. I'm really kind of speechless." Now 43, Elway was a Stanford economics major prior to being selected No. 1 overall by the Baltimore Colts in the 1983 draft. Had the Colts not immediately flipped him to Denver for a couple of veterans and a first-round pick in '84, they might not be the Indianapolis Colts today. The trim and youthful-looking Sanders, at 35 the youngest of the inductees, retired five years ago from the Lions after becoming the first ever to string together 10 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. The electrifying running back, who won the Heisman Trophy in his last season (1988) at Oklahoma State, finished with 15,269 career rushing yards, now third in NFL history.

IF THE SCORE IS LOW, LOOK FOR HOPKINS' TO WIN: Johns Hopkins is an impressive 50-4 (.926) under head coach Jim Margraff when scoring 24 or more points. Currently, the Blue Jays have won 37 of their last 39 when scoring 24 or more. Further, Hopkins is 56-8-2 (.863) when holding the opposition to 14 points or less since Margraff arrived for the 1990 season. The last time JHU lost a game when it held the opposition to 14 points or less was on October 31, 1997, when the Blue Jays dropped a 13-7 triple-overtime decision against Dickinson. Currently, the Blue Jays have won 22 straight games when holding the opposition to 14 points or less. BACK IN THE SADDLE: The Diplomats will be looking to erase the memories of being limited to just one yard rushing last week in a 41-20 loss to Muhlenberg. Leading the charge this week will be tailaback Scott Stephen (Jr., Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) who is second in the Centennial Conference with five rushing touchdowns. Overall, Stephen has rushed 65 times for 187 yards, an average of 2.9 yards per carry and 46.8 yards per game. JAYS' TROUNCING: Salton has been deadly to the Bluejays' secondary totaling 12 receptions for 251 yards with a touchdown in two meetings with Hopkins, an average of 125.5 yards per game. Last year, he reeled in five catches for 141 yards, an obscene 28.2 yards per reception, including a career long 75-yard scoring strike from the arm of quarterback Doug Hiltner (Sr., Margate, NJ/Atlantic City).

IN THE RANKINGS: Through two games, the Diplomats rank among the CC best in scoring offense (4th, 23.0 ppg), pass offense (2nd, 195.5 ypg), total offense (3rd, 321.5 ypg), total defense (3rd, 268.5 ypg), opponent first downs (3rd, 28), sacks by (4th, 6 for 25 yards), 4th down conversions (2nd, four of seven), field goals (1st, one of one) and kickoff coverage (1st, 13.7 yards).
KICKING IT UP: The Diplomats' 27-yard field goal by Eggertsson versus Oberlin marked the first in program history since a 42-yard bomb by Steve Linebaugh '02 in a 24-16 loss to Gettysburg College at Williamson Field on November 10, 2001. WHY IS F&M CALLED THE DIPLOMATS?: Franklin & Marshall College's nickname of Diplomats comes from New York Times sportswriter Arthur Daley who coined the name after watching Fordham come back in the fourth quarter behind NFL Hall-of-Famers Vince Lombardi and Alex Wojciechowicz to defeat F&M 14-7 at the Polo Grounds in the season-opening game of the 1935 season. Prior to the game, F&M teams were known as either "Nevonians" or "Big Blue". The name "Diplomats" was derived from the fact that F&M was five minutes late coming out of the locker-room to begin the second half, tardiness, according to Daley, "customary in the diplomatic services of both hemispheres."

Bulls Return Home To Host Marshall
UB's Homecoming game kicks off at 1 pm this Saturday
Following a pair of road games, the Bulls return to UB Stadium this Saturday afternoon for their Homecoming game against the defending Mid-American Conference champion Marshall Thundering Herd. UB has an 0-3 home mark this season and lost its only MAC home game to Akron. Buffalo is looking to snap a 17-game losing skid. Meanwhile, Marshall will be playing its first MAC road contest of the season. The Thundering Herd is trying to win its second consecutive game and move above .500 in conference play for the first time this season. Last week, Marshall earned its first MAC victory of the season and improved to 3-3 overall with a 49-33 home win over Kent State. Coach Jim Hofher "Arguably, Marshall has had as challenging of a schedule as anybody else in the conference," said UB head coach Jim Hofher on Tuesday at UB's weekly press conference. "Their record is very deceiving and misleading when you take into consideration what their schedule has been. The challenge continues this week for us against a very dynamic football team."

Oaks' First Baseman Jim Marshall was born in Illinois, but grew up in Southern California. He attended Compton High School in Los Angeles and Compton Community College, where he played baseball, football, and basketball. He later attended Long Beach State College. Big Jim, at 6' 1", 195 pounds, first appeared for the Oaks in 1950, when he came up from the Albuquerque team to appear in four games. He started the 1951 season in Oakland, hitting .255 with 9 home runs, but finished the season in Wenatchee. He spent most of the 1952 season in Nashville, where he hit .296 with 24 home runs and 98 rbi's. In 1953, Jim returned to Oakland, where he batted .273 and finished second to Bill Howerton with 24 home runs and 99 rbi's for the Acorns. Jim would have probably accumulated more but for a pulled thigh muscle which took him out of play for a month. Jim's best year was 1954. After getting off to a slow start, he batted .285 and lead the Pacific Coast League in both home runs (with 31) and rbi's (with 123). The Oaks ended up in the Governor's Cup playoffs against the Seals that season. Jim managed to hit a home run in each of the first two playoff games, and drove in pitcher Don Farraresse with a third-inning single that clinched the third game for the Acorns. Thanks in part to Jim's efforts, the Acorns took home the Cup. Jim Marshall will go on to play for five major league teams, and manage the Chicago Cubs in 1974- 1976 and the Oakland A's in 1977.

'It's Always With You'
For almost 30 years, the loss of 75 people in a plane crash has loomed over this West Virginia town like a mountain. But slowly, Huntington is finding its way into the sun.
This article appeared in the Chicago Tribune magazine section on Sept. 5, 1999. By JULIA KELLER I was born with the sound of a railroad whistle in my ears, the mountains at my back and the river at my feet. Everyone in Huntington, W. Va., was born that way because the city was captive to those elements. The coal was spooned out of the West Virginia mountains, heaped into railroad cars, then loaded onto barges and pushed down the Ohio River. Huntington, named for railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington, was the spot where the railroad met the river. If you lived along the Ohio River, as I did, you could stand on the bank and marvel at the great, flat coal barges sliding past like dirty black wafers. At night, their searchlights would sweep the riverbank on each side; there was something thrilling about being frisked by light as you stood on the bank, hoping your mother didn't call you inside too soon. Things are different in Huntington these days. Because the coalfields are no longer thriving, rail traffic has steadily diminished. In the past three decades, Huntington's population has inched back from about 74,000 to some 55,000.
