A light-blue sign above the entrance to the Pam Lynchner State Jail implores in white letters: "Do the Right Thing." The facility, with barbed wire snaking around it, holds 2,144 inmates in several light-blue, two-story dormitories with gray roofs. The 64-acre compound amid tall trees seems much farther than 30 miles from Reliant Stadium in Houston, where the Carolina Panthers face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII on Sunday. The hoopla is of no interest to Inmate 1090194. He is Dexter Keith Manley. "I don't watch football. It's kind of painful," Manley said last week in an interview in the jail's visitors' area. He paused. "It's just a choice right now. I'm always thinking about the past: What I coulda, what I shoulda. I haven't put closure to that yet."
The former Redskins star, who will turn 45 Monday, is finishing a two-year sentence for possession of crack cocaine after receiving the maximum punishment with a March 5 release date. "For him, the excitement is not the Super Bowl," Manley's wife, Lydia, said in a telephone conversation. "The excitement is that he has 36 days left."
During nine seasons starting in 1981, Manley helped Joe Gibbs's Redskins win Super Bowls in 1983 and 1988 while setting the franchise record with 971/2 sacks. A 6-foot-3, 253-pound defensive end, Manley was a fan favorite with a playing ferocity that belied his constant, seductive smile. He also was known for the six-inch scar on his left cheek and colorful, cocksure remarks. Manley, whose NFL career was marked by suspensions because of alcohol and drug use, tested positive for cocaine three times with the Redskins, and the organization released him in 1990. After two more positive tests during single-season stints with Arizona and Tampa Bay, Manley was banned by the NFL in 1991.

Dexter Manley, No. 725483
Former Redskin awaits parole
By Michael Graczyk, Associated Press writer
TEAGUE, Texas He wears a uniform. He has a number. He draws shouts from people who recognize him as he strides past sweat-soaked men working out on weight machines.
The white uniform, however, is not the home jersey of his Washington Redskins. The number assigned to him is not 72, which he wore for the Redskins in the 1980s while one of the NFL's premier defensive linemen.
And his acquaintances aren't athletes. They're convicts.
"They just call me `Inmate Manley,"' says Dexter Manley, No. 725483 in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Institutional Division.
Manley is up for parole this week from the medium security Boyd Unit about 100 miles southeast of the stadium where he annually would terrorize Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks after serving more than 14 months of a four-year term for cocaine possession.
He hopes it's the start of a new life.
"I haven't had much sleep," he said a few days before his scheduled Friday release. "I know the anxiety is there, the excitement.

Manley addresses Mullins banquet
By Jeff Brown
Senior Staff Writer Professional football player Dexter Manley will be the guest of honor at the Dec. 6 Chucky Mullins Courage Award Banquet in the Student Union ballroom.
Manley, a former player for the Washington Redskins, held several records for that team including most total sacks, and the record for the most sacks in a single season.
The annual event was created to support a special fund for students who are injured as a result of accidents, and pass tribute to one of the Rebels' most outstanding defensive backs, Chucky Mullins, who died two years after sustaining paralyzing neck injuries during the 1989 Ole Miss-Vanderbilt football game. This year's banquet is sponsored by the Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Beta Sigma fraternities.
The recipient of the Chucky Mullins Courage Award will receive a plaque and the honor of wearing Mullins' No. 38 on his jersey. Past recipients include Alundis Brice (1994) and Derek Jones (1996).
"This banquet is so important because it meets needs at many different levels," said Thomas Wallace, associate vice chancellor for student life and a Phi Beta Sigma alumnus. "It recognizes one of our team's most valuable living players, memorializes one who has passed on, and helps injured students and their families."
"Meanwhile, the cooperative effort between a historically white fraternity and a historically black one helps to strengthen racial ties on campus," Wallace said. "In addition, we feel very fortunate and honored to have Dexter Manley participate in this important event."

Running back Earnest Byner (21) was part of a balanced Washington attack that gained 417 net yards. Redskins Ryp the Bickering Bills
January 26, 1992
The Bills bickered. The Redskins relaxed. The Bills bragged. The Redskins rested. The Bills bombed. The Redskins roared. Buffalo came into Super Bowl XXVI full of itself and confident of its ability to defeat favored Washington. Talk about false hopes. Washington came into Super Bowl XXVI quietly cocky, bolstered by a season-long domination of the National Football League. The Redskins let the Bills talk all they wanted. Then they simply outplayed, overpowered and outcoached the American Football Conference champions, 37-24, in the Minneapolis Metrodome, turning what promised to be a competitive game into still another National Football Conference-dominated celebration. "A team reflects the personality of its coach," said Redskins linebacker Matt Millen, referring to the low-key attitude of his teammates. "You don't hear anything from us. That's because this is about as exciting as it can get for us." Not that Washington Coach Joe Gibbs is dull. He just doesn't believe in a lot of pre-game gab. He has spent years with the Redskins acquiring players who are intelligent, hard-working and talented but not very individualistic. Indeed, short of linebacker Wilber Marshall and receiver Gary Clark, both of whom occasionally speak before they think, this well could be the most humble team in the league.

A trip to Hog Heaven
By Bill Simmons
Page 2 columnist WASHINGTON (Wednesday, 5 p.m. ET) I feel like Colonel Jessup right now. You want stories? You want stories You can't handle these stories!!!! From left, George Starke, Don Warren, Joe Jacoby, Rick Walker and Mark May reunite in the trenches at RFK Stadium. I just spent four consecutive hours with the Hogs the heart and soul of the Redskins' Super Bowl teams in '83, '88 and '91 nodding, prodding, giggling, winding them up, watching them go. Head Hog George Starke was there. And future Hall of Famer Joe Jacoby. And former Pro Bowler Mark May. And tight ends Don Warren and Doc Walker. Original Hogs Russ Grimm and Jeff Bostic couldn't make it, but we didn't need 'em. The stories kept coming. And coming. And coming. We started off at the venerable RFK, arguably the Boston Garden of football stadiums. Lambeau Field might get the press heck, it's the closest thing to a sports cathedral we have right now but RFK and Chicago's Soldier Field always reeked of football more than any other place. The seats practically hug the field. The sections look like they might collapse onto one another. There's enough concrete and metal going around to start your own construction company. Even now, even after they tried to jazz it up for soccer, it still seems like this place hasn't seen a paint job or tweaking since 1342 AD. Once everyone arrived, we headed right out onto the field, ignoring the chilly breeze and light drizzle. As May said, "This is perfect. This is our weather." You could practically smell the nostalgia. And then the stories started coming, one after the other.
