Dexter Manley Arrested Again
PUBLIC FIGURES
March 1995
On Feb. 14 former Washington Redskin Dexter Manley was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance (David Aldridge, "At Rock Bottom, Manley Searches for a Way Back Up," Washington Post , March 5, 1995, p. D1). From Houston, Manley had phoned a friend who is a producer at the Fox affiliate WTTG Channel 5 in Washington, asking for help contacting DC Mayor Marion Barry. Manley reportedly wanted Barry's assistance in finding a drug treatment program. When the former football player suddenly hung up, his friend became concerned and called Houston police. Police responded and reportedly found four rocks of crack cocaine on a bed in his motel room. The Post article quotes family members and friends who say that Manley is addicted to crack and is at times suicidal and paranoid. According to his son, Manley said he hears voices and believes that there is a conspiracy against him. He has been diagnosed as suffering from manic-depressive and attention deficit disorders. On Mar. 3, he was released on personal recognizance and was ordered to be evaluated for mental competency at the Sam Houston Spring Branch Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in Springfield, Texas.

Dexter Manley Given 4-Year Sentence
PUBLIC FIGURES
October 1995
Former Washington Redskin Dexter Manley was sentenced to four years in prison in Texas after pleading guilty to two counts of cocaine possession (David Aldridge, "Manley: 4-Year Sentence," Washington Post , August 5, 1995, p. C1). Manley, 37, was originally charged with four incidents, but two charges were dropped when Manley pled guilty. As was reported in the March issue of NewsBriefs Manley was arrested and charged on Feb. 16 with possession of a controlled substance . Police had been called to Manley's motel room after he threatened to commit suicide. He agreed to be admitted on an involuntary basis at the Sam Houston Spring Branch Hospital for at least 90 days. He remained there for four months, but later was arrested after a traffic stop in Houston. In that incident, he fled from police and tried to escape down the highway on foot. Manley pled guilty to possession of a controlled substance in incidents on Nov. 13 of last year and July 26 of this year. Manley was a defensive end with the Redskins for two Super Bowl victories in 1983 and 1988. On December 21, 1991 he retired from the National Football League after he was banned for having failed drug tests on four occasions. He played in the Canadian football league for a season in 1993.

The NFL’s Hall of Fame balloting is Saturday. Excuse me if I yawn. It’s hard to take it seriously sometimes, when the election is so pious and political. Bill Parcells has won two Super Bowls and is one of the three best coaches of my generation, yet apparently his little flirtation with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers turned some voters off. They may make him wait another year. So what if he got the itch to coach? It’s who he is. But it’s always something with these high and mighty Hall of Fame voters, and it happens in every sport. I’m one of the people who believes Pete Rose should have been in the Hall of Fame yesterday, that on-the-field performance counts for everything as long as Pete did not bet on himself to lose. And no one claims he did. That said, I’d like to introduce you to the NFL’s Pete Rose Dexter Manley The former Redskins defensive end should at least be on the list of finalists, especially when you see

Ex-Redskins Star Serving 2-Year Jail Term By Nunyo Demasio
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, February 1, 2004; Page E16 HUMBLE, Tex. A light-blue sign above the entrance to the Pam Lynchner State Jail implores in white letters: "Do the Right Thing." The facility, with barbed wire snaking around it, holds 2,144 inmates in several light-blue, two-story dormitories with gray roofs. The 64-acre compound amid tall trees seems much farther than 30 miles from Reliant Stadium in Houston, where the Carolina Panthers face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII on Sunday. The hoopla is of no interest to Inmate 1090194. He is Dexter Keith Manley. "I don't watch football. It's kind of painful," Manley said last week in an interview in the jail's visitors' area. He paused.

Manley faces evidence tampering charge
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday May 12, 2001 5:41 PM Dexter Manley retired from the NFL after failing his second drug test while with Tampa Bay. Damien Strohmeyer/Allsport HOUSTON (AP) Former NFL player Dexter Manley appeared in court Friday to face a charge of tampering with evidence after he allegedly attempted to swallow less than a gram of cocaine during a January drug bust at a Houston motel. Manley, 43, said he is innocent and remains free on $20,000 bail. Prosecutor Pat Stayton said Manley was stopped Jan. 10 because officers watched him leave a hotel room they were about to search. Police said Manley tried to swallow the cocaine as they were attempting to detain him. "They had no idea he was there," Stayton said. "He was not the subject of the warrant. He was just there."

Editor The "jock" at his finest WASHINGTON - Dexter Manley never viewed himself as weak. As a strong professional football player on a championship team, why would he. After an announcment to the world that he was illiterate, he soon understood that he was not as strong as he thought. Unlike the popular show, The Weakest Link , the definition of the strongest link, has always been viewed as the "jock" - tall, handsome and full of athletic prowess. The "jock" has been known to excel at basketball and football and could run track if he so chose. He attracts strikingly beautiful women. In class, he's the cat's meow: the teachers adore him and will do anything just to see him pass. Philadelphia 76er Allen Iverson, is successful despite leaving college early.
