DEACON JONES As a football player and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Deacon Jones is a household name throughout America. A fourteen-year veteran of the NFL, Deacon played for the Los Angeles Rams from 196 1-1971, as a San Diego Charger from 1972-1973, and finished his career in 1974 as a Washington Redskin. In the world of football, Deacon is most well known as the man who coined the term "sack," perfected the devastating "head slap," and was a member of the most dominant defensive line the league has ever seen - the "Fearsome Foursome." He was named the "Secretary of Defense" by Los Angeles fans, the "Most Valuable Ram of All Time," by the Los Angeles Times, the "Greatest Defensive End of Modern Football," by Coach George Allen, and has been recently named as "Defensive End of the Century" by Sports Illustrated. He was unanimously voted to the NFL's 75 Year All Time Team and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, in 1980. Add to that the many millennium accolades by sports media everywhere-a member of everyone's top 100 players of all time - and it is easy to say that Deacon's football career stands alone. As a personality in both radio and television, Deacon is almost as well known for his humor, candor, charisma, and interesting and knowledgeable assessment of the game. He tells it like it is. Deacon's media and broadcasting credentials are numerous and include a range of venues, from countless television appearances on shows like "Up Close", "Hardcore Football", "Monday Night Live", and "Pro Magazine", to being a member of the Los Angeles Rams broadcast team as color analyst and current analyst and personality on Fox Sports Network's NFL This Morning. Football fans love the intimacy and behind-the-scenes insight that Deacon brings to the game. He has appeared on virtually every television and radio sports talk show in both the U.S. and Canada.

Fantasy football Team gear "I'm the best defensive end around. I'd hate to have to play against me." Deacon Jones
Trying to ignore Deacon Jones was like trying to ignore a parade through your living room. He was colorful, cocky, confident and athletically gifted, the leader of the Los Angeles Rams' Fearsome Foursome defensive line in the 1960s. Jones was a fast, rugged and mobile sackmaster, a Gino Marchetti-like pass rusher who helped set the standard for modern defensive end play. Jones was a 6-5, 272-pound unknown when he was selected out of Mississippi Valley State in the 14th round of the 1961 NFL draft. But that changed quickly. Jones played with the same flamboyant personality that he exhibited with reporters and soon became the leader of a devastating line that also included tackles Merlin Olsen and Roosevelt Grier and end Lamar Lundy. Deacon (a self-ascribed moniker that replaced the "too common" David) became a terror for blockers who were not quick enough to keep him from bursting into the backfield and quarterbacks who had to scramble for their lives. It was Jones who coined the term sack, "You know, like you sack a city you devastate it." In an effort to control Jones, teams used double- and triple-teams, but that strategy simply freed Olsen, his partner in the best tackle/end combination in NFL history.

Jones, Deacon,
byname of DAVID JONES (b. Dec. 9, 1938, Eatonville, Fla., U.S.), African-American professional football player, regarded as one of the sport's premier defensemen. Jones, an accomplished high school athlete in Orlando, Fla., played football at Mississippi Vocational College and South Carolina State College. He was relatively unknown in 1961 when the Los Angeles Rams selected him in the 14th round of the National Football League (NFL) draft, but he soon distinguished himself as the left defensive end of the Rams' "Fearsome Foursome," the moniker of the team's renowned defensive line. Able to run 100 yards in 9.7 seconds, Jones was surprisingly agile for his powerful frameabout 6 feet 5 inches (1.9 m) and 250 pounds (113 kg). He originated the term sack for the act of tackling the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage, a skill at which Jones excelled. He was named All-NFL six consecutive times (1965-70) and the NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice, in 1967-68. Jones left the Rams in 1972 to play two seasons with the San Diego Chargers, before playing his final year with the Washington Redskins in 1974. During his 14-year professional career, he missed only three regular season games and played in several Pro Bowl games. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in 1980 and in 1994 was named to the All-Time NFL Team.

Other Resources After playing at two small, predominantly black colleges, South Carolina State and Mississippi Vocational, Jones joined the NFL's Los Angeles Rams as a fourteenth-round draft choice in 1961. Flamboyant and confident to the point of cockiness, Jones invented his nickname, "Deacon," for no particular reason except that he felt David Jones was not a memorable name. He also coined the term "sack" for the tackle of a quarterback before he can get the pass away. Jones was the premier sacker of his day. Playing left end for the Rams' famous "Fearsome Foursome" defensive line, the 6-foot-5, 260-pounder has been credited with 26 sacks in 1967 alone, although sacks were not an official statistic at the time. A consensus All-Pro six years in a row, from 1965 through 1970, he played in eight Pro Bowls and was voted the NFL defensive player of the year in 1967 and 1968. In 1972, Jones went to the San Diego Chargers and spent two seasons there before finishing his career with the Washington Redskins in 1974. He missed only three games in his 14-season career.

S.C. State Retires Jerseys of Deacon Jones and Donnie Shell
October 25, 1998 Orangeburg, SC - South Carolina State University retired the numbers of two of its former football standouts, David (Deacon) Jones (1957-58) and Donnie Shell (1970-73) Saturday. The number "90" that Shell wore during his playing days and the "66" donned by Jones were both retired as a lasting tribute to their achievements. Both of the honorees were on hand for the ceremony which occurred at halftime of the South Carolina State vs. Hampton I-AA showdown. The second-ranked Pirates won the contest, 20-7. Shell. a Whitmire, South Carolina native, was a standout linebacker and defensive back for the Bulldogs during his career, earning All-America honors in 1973.
