Pro football still tailored to the fans
By Kevin Gleason
Times Herald-Record
kgleason@th-record.com

You don't hear about the NFL trying to eliminate teams. You don't read about the NFL players association boss, some football Donald Fehr, holding fans hostage with unreasonable labor demands. You don't hear NFLPA boss Gene Upshaw spew arrogance like his hardball counterpart. Best yet, you don't know who will raise the Lombardi Trophy each winter. Baseball has contraction, unbalanced competition and strikes. The NBA is three years removed from a lockout, often hard on the eyes and void of historical recognition. The NFL, meanwhile, rolls relatively smoothly down the professional sports interstate. As the playoffs shift into day two today, we take a break from wondering which baseball owner will spend the most money for wins. Or whether Fehr and Bud Selig will talk their way into a strike. Or which team from baseball's short list will win the World Series.

No. 2 QB couldn't find his way to San Diego
Buccaneers notebook By Tom Shanahan
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
January 26, 2003 T ampa Bay backup quarterback Rob Johnson may not get much playing time, but that doesn't stop the Disney folks from signing him to an agreement just in case fate makes him the Super Bowl MVP. Backup quarterbacks have to be prepared in case of an injury to the starter, and so do advertisers who produce commercials. Johnson made two starts and played in six games in the regular season. He's 57-of-88 for 536 yards and one touchdown, with two interceptions and a quarterback rating of 75.8. Johnson's problem is he was sacked 19 times in his limited playing time. Starter Brad Johnson was sacked 21 times in 451 pass attempts. Rob Johnson's value as an NFL quarterback has fluctuated since his days as a promising backup behind Mark Brunell in Jacksonville (1995-97), his acrimonious years with Doug Flutie competing for playing time in Buffalo (1998-2000) and his post-Flutie season as the Bills' starter (2001). In a couple of the offseasons, the USC alum who keeps a home in Laguna Beach had hoped to land in San Diego.

Ranking the Offensive Lines - July '00
written by Joe Bryant ( CheatSheets.net
printed with permission by Fantasy Index Magazine
ARTICLE REPRODUCED FOR FREE AT WWW.DRAFTGUIDE.COM In addition to participating in the Fantasy Index Experts Poll for 2000, I’m pleased to have an article published in this year’s magazine. My friend and Index Publisher, Ian Allan, was kind enough to let me offer a sneak preview of the article as the magazine hits the newsstands.
Enjoy!
Joe Take a stroll through the NFL apparel at the local sports store and check out the jersey numbers. Lots of 12s, maybe an 8, a few scattered 80s and probably enough different 32s to outfit a team. It's not easy, however, to find a jersey with any number in the 60s or 70s. The offensive linemen who wear those numerals, simply don't have the star appeal of the other skill positions.
But ask any NFL GM to name the best and most valuable players in the league and names like Tony Boselli, Orlando Pace, Larry Allen and Jonathan Ogden will be thrown out as often as the higher profile quarterbacks and running backs. Knowledgeable fans know it too. A telling moment occurred at this year's NFL draft when Washington's new left tackle, Chris Samuels, made his way over to some screaming fans. The Washington faithful went berserk as Samuels repeatedly bellowed, "There's a new Hog in the house!" Given what he'll mean to the team, their enthusiasm was justified.

At long last, Lomas The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - The shock Lomas Brown received when the Cleveland Browns cut him may not have been as jarring as the telephone call he got from his father a few hours later. "He said, 'You know, that's the first job you've ever been fired from,'" Brown said. "I started thinking about it that way, and you know, he was right." From the depths of that day last February, Brown has re-emerged with the New York Giants. After 16 years of playing almost exclusively for mediocre teams with little shot at postseason glory, the 37-year-old left tackle has proven himself by finally making it to the Super Bowl. "It means so much to me," Brown said, after arriving in Tampa late Sunday. That Brown is something of a reclamation project is not a new story for football, or the Super Bowl, a weeklong festival of storytelling in which poignancy can be extracted from almost any player's travails.

Dick Dunn
Interviewed by Sean Fagan of RL1908.com Dick Dunn made his first grade debut for Eastern Suburbs as a 16 year old in 1937. He is the last remaining link to perhaps the greatest club side of the 20th Century in Sydney, or anywhere else for that matter! The Tri-Colours lost only one game in three seasons as they won the premiership in 1935, 1936 and 1937. Dunn though was a great player for Easts in his own right. He has always been a devout fan of Easts, still is, and went from carrying the kit bags of his Tri-Colour heroes at the Sports Ground to playing alongside them in a meteoric rise. Before his career was over he won three premierships with Easts, including the 1945 decider where he scored an incredible three tries and five goals. Dick Dunn still goes to games at the Sydney Football Stadium. He is looking forward to season 2002 and seeing matches every weekend now that Souths, the Dragons and his beloved Roosters are all sharing the Stadium. - Thanks for the opportunity for this interview Mr. Dunn. I want to begin with when you first started playing League. You were an Easts local junior weren't you?
