Center, 1945-1948 He's listed as a center, but Chuck Bednarik was truly one of college football greatest overall players. Before the age of specialization in college football, Bednarik played both ways as a dominant lineman on offense and a devastating linebacker on defense. There wasn't a tougher or meaner player to ever step on the field known for his intimidation and his iron will playing all 60 minutes on both sides of the ball. He's known more as one of the NFL's greatest players, but he was just as good, and more dominant, in college. Bednarik's story is much more interesting than just his battles on the gridiron, his real battles made him a hero before ever going to Penn. The war hero: Bednarik flew on 30 combat missions over Germany as a gunner during World War II. As much praise and as many accolades as he received on the football field, the best honors were from his war exploits as he was highly decorated for his honor in battle. The 60-minute man: You couldn't get him off the field. He became the first offensive lineman to ever win the Maxwell Award as the nation's top football player in 1948 and finished 3rd in the Heisman balloting, but he was just as good at linebacker as his NFL career would show. The 1947 Quakers went undefeated in 1947 for the first time in 39 years led by a defense that allowed only 35 points in their 8 games. The only blemish in the 7-0-1 season was against Army who tied them 7-7.

Sixty minute man
By Ron Flatter
Special to ESPN.com
"A linebacker is like an animal. He's like a lion or a tiger and he goes after prey. He wants to eat him, he wants to kick the out of him. That's a linebacker," says Chuck Bednarik on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. Bednarik (# 60) had 20 career interceptions. In the fifties, the "Sixty Minute Man" was "Lovin' Dan," Billy Ward and his Dominoes' hero of double entendre. The nineties brought Deion Sanders, a wide-receiving, defensive-backing, kick-returning general practitioner, the latter-day "Sixty Minute Man." Both were works of fiction. Some would argue no man has lived up to the reputation of "Lovin' Dan," and Deion never clocked in close to a full hour, not even in the primest of his time. Want to find the real-life "Sixty Minute Man?" Turn to the one who was known as "Concrete Charlie." Almost four decades since he last played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Chuck Bednarik is remembered as the last of pro football's true full-timers - center on offense, middle linebacker on defense, in the trenches on special teams (even before they were called special teams). Bednarik was no "Lovin' Dan." His plaque in the Pro Football Hall of Fame says he was a "rugged, durable, bulldozing blocker" and a "bone-jarring tackler." That meant he was no Deion, either.

Fantasy football Team gear "Bednarik hates to see anybody standing up on the field. Every time he does see a man standing around with the whistle yet to blow halting a play, he knocks him down just for the sheer joy of it. He'll choose anybody." Former Redskins coach Joe Kuharich, 1954
The No. 60 he wore on his Philadelphia jersey was prophetic, a harbinger of his now-enduring fame as professional football's last 60-minute player and hero of the Eagles' 1960 championship game. Chuck Bednarik was many things during his outstanding 14-year NFL career, but he'll always be remembered for the one magical season he celebrated at the not-so-tender football age of 35. When the 1960 campaign opened, Bednarik was beginning his 12th season and sixth straight at center, after a mid-career switch from linebacker. But an injury to linebacker Bob Pellegrini in the Eagles' fifth game prompted coach Buck Shaw to ask Bednarik to revive the long-discarded concept of two-way football. The former University of Pennsylvania star played offense and defense the rest of the season and capped off his 58-minute championship game performance with a victory-saving bear-hug tackle of Green Bay's Jim Taylor at the Eagles' 10-yard line. Bednarik was as rugged as the Bethlehem, Pa., steel town he called home. He was an old-school competitor who threw his 6-3, 233-pound body around with reckless abandon, whether creating holes with his relentless blocking or making punishing, sometimes vicious tackles. In an era of evolving offenses, he was the perfect linebacker: big, tall and agile with the ability to cover short passes. He had a mean streak and played for keeps, prompting opponents to eye him with understandable trepidation.

He was a consensus All-American in 1947 and 1948 and he won the 1948 Maxwell Award as the outstanding college player of the year. He sat out the first two games of his professional career with the Philadelphia Eagles because of injury and then missed only one more game in his 14 seasons. After playing offensive center in 1949 and 1950, when he was named to the Associated Press All-Pro team, Bednarik was moved to linebacker and was an All-Pro at that position 6 consecutive years, 1951 through 1956. When the Eagles were depleted by injuries in 1960, Bednarik played on offense and defense for most of the season. He was rewarded with a $250 bonus and another All-Pro selection as a linebacker. Philadelphia beat the Green Bay Packers 17-13 in the NFL championship game when Bednarik made a touchdown-saving tackle on Green Bay fullback Jimmy Taylor with time running out. His most famous tackle, though, came earlier in the season against the New York Giants. With the Eagles leading 17-10 in a game that effectively decided the Eastern Division championship, New York halfback Frank Gifford caught a pass in Philadelphia and was trying to get out of bounds to stop the clock when Don Burroughs tackled him low and Bednarik hit him high.

Chuck Bednarik Award
College Defensive Player of the Year
Julius Peppers, University of North Carolina
Two legends. One legend-in-the making.
"Honestly, I don’t think there’s anyone wh9o can stop me one-on-one," Peppers said. "Everyone will get blocked once in awhile. But one-on-one, I’d win about eight or nine times out of ten." Peppers is a frightening combination of speed and power. He bench-presses 425 pounds, runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and has a 37.5 inch vertical leap. He was a key performer on the North Carolina basketball team for two seasons and helped the Tar Heels to the Final Four in 2000. Playing as the sixth man, Peppers had 21 points and 10 rebounds in an NCAA tournament game against Penn State last season. Peppers gave up basketball to concentrate on football this past season and it paid off as he helped the Tar Heels post an 8-5 record under first-year coach John Bunting, the former Eagle. North Carolina climaxed the season with a 16-10 win over Auburn in the Peach Bowl as the defense, led by Peppers, limited the Tigers to just 31 yards rushing. "I still believe that if I committed to basketball, I could make an impact in the NBA," Peppers told Sports Illustrated. "But my coaches say that in football, I could be another Lawrence Taylor or Jevon Kearse. I now see football as my job and my greatest challenge."

More Info on Chuck Bednarik
By Ron Flatter
Special to ESPN.com
Signature Game
Nov. 20, 1960 -
Trailing the Eagles 17-10, the New York Giants were trying to mount a late comeback at Yankee Stadium. Halfback Frank Gifford reached back to catch Charlie Conerley's pass, and he turned upfield in routine fashion. That's when Chuck Bednarik came along and changed both their lives. "Chuck knocked him right out of his shoes," Eagles defensive back Tom Brookshier said. Bednarik's crushing blow to Gifford's chest left the running back on his back, out cold with a severe concussion - and out of football the rest of that season and all the next year as well. As Eagles linebacker Chuck Weber recovered the fumble that seemed almost an afterthought to the ferocity of the hit, Bednarik stood over Gifford, pumping his right arm, doing a dance and yelling. "This game is over." "I was celebrating," Bednarik said, "but the reason wasn't that he was down. The reason was that the hit won the game."
