Troy named to prestigious New England Football Writers Team
MEDFORD Four members of the 1999 Tufts University football team were named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Star Team announced yesterday. The league's 10 head coaches met at Tufts University and selected the All-Star squad and Players of the Year. Senior WR Jon Troy (Melrose, MA/Melrose) , senior OL Mo Glynn (Croton, NY/Croton-Harmon) , senior DT Gerry Topping (Westborough, MA/Westborough) and junior CB/KR Brian Holmes (Newport, NH/Newport) were selected All-NESCAC. With five positions on the team filled by Tufts players, the 4-4 Jumbos were the most recognized team along with Bates College. Troy was also named to the 1999 All-New England Division II-III All-Star Team as selected by the New England Football Writers. "These guys were all leaders by example," head coach Bill Samko said. "As much as they contributed individually, they added more to the team with their attitude and effort. I can guarantee that though they're pleased to be named All-Stars, each one of them would trade it for a win or two out of the close losses we had this year." One of the top receivers in the country this fall, Troy averaged 8.8 receptions per game (6th in NCAA Div. III) and 106.8 yards per game (18th). He set the team's single-season and career records in both receptions (70; 184) and yards (855; 2,511) and tied team marks with 15 receptions versus Williams on October 23 and with 12 career touchdown catches. He is also a Northeast Region Academic All-Star.

Bill Lacey Position:
Head Coach
Experience:
1st Season
Bill Lacey proved to many last season that he was capable of stepping in and taking over a championship football team. The 31-year-old Lacey replaced Jim Fleming as Sacred Heart head coach in 2002, after a dream 2001 season that saw the Pioneers compile a spotless 11-0 record, win the Northeast Conference, ECAC Bowl and NCAA I-AA National Mid-Major championships. Fleming resigned in February of 2002 to take an assistant coaching position at the University of North Carolina and Lacey stepped in to assume the helm. Under Lacey’s guidance, the Pioneers finished with a 7-3 record in 2002 and contended for the Northeast Conference title until the final week of the season. In his three seasons with the Sacred Heart program, the Pioneers have compiled an impressive 28-4 record. As was the case with Fleming, Sacred Heart is Lacey's first opportunity as a head coach. The Stroudsburg, Pa., native spent one season apiece as an offensive line coach at Wagner and Bates before returning to Wagner in March 1997 as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. When Fleming began to assemble his Sacred Heart staff in the winter of 2000, Lacey became his first hire. Lacey spent two years as Sacred Heart's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, providing much of the brainpower behind a high-powered offense that generated 314 points in 2000 and a school-record 450 points in 2001. Under his tutelage, wide receiver DeVeren Johnson, quarterback Justin Holtfreter and running back Marvin Royal earned first-team All-America recognition and a host of other players won post-season honors.

Sapolu, Tuinei not quite
ready to pass the torch
CALL it a changing of the guard. At a time when three former Hawaii prep stars from St. Louis have been drafted and are looking forward to their first season in the National Football League, the careers of two NFL veterans from here apparently have come to an end. Picked in this year's NFL draft were center Olin Kreutz (Chicago Bears), running back Chris Fuamatu-Maafala (Pittsburgh Steelers) and defensive tackle Viliami Maumau (Carolina Panthers). They will begin their NFL careers just when Jesse Sapolu and Mark Tuinei could be ending theirs. Both Sapolu and Tuinei have played 15 seasons, each with one team Sapolu with the San Francisco 49ers and Tuinei the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers open training camp Saturday. Sapolu, though, won't be there. He's coming home the following Monday. Tuinei wasn't invited to camp by the Cowboys, although he still hopes to play one more year. If Sapolu and Tuinei who aren't ready to give retirement speeches yet can somehow play another season with the only team they've ever played for, they would set franchise records for service. Tuinei shares the Dallas record of 15 seasons with Bill Bates and Ed "Too Tall" Jones. Bates recently retired to become a special teams coach for the Cowboys.

Bobcat of the Week

This Saturday in the rain in Williamstown, Mass., the Bates football team made history. The Bobcats recorded the first ever win against Williams for the Bates football program with a 10-7 victory. Rookie running back Ken Adams' three yard plunge provided the game winning score with 1:18 left in the fourth quarter.
The loss brought several streaks to an end for the Williams program and head football coach Dick Farley. Williams had been 15-0 against Bates in football prior to Saturday's game. The Ephs had also been in the midst of a streak of 128 games without losing back-to-back games (Trinity defeated Williams the previous week). Farley also suffered only his eighth loss at home as the head coach at Williams.
"Beating anyone on their home field is great. Beating Williams proves what type of team we have this year," said Bates head coach Mark Harriman after the game.
The Ephs are widely viewed as the premier football program in the conference year in and year out and entered this season as the two-time defending conference champions. Quarterback Joe Reardon is also the two-time ECAC Northeast Division III Offensive Player of the Year as well as two-time NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year.

OAS_AD('Top'); Congress OKs $87 Billion Iraq Bill Tuesday, November 04, 2003 Iraq search Afghanistan search OAS_AD('Middle'); One day after Americans in Iraq endured their worst casualties since March, the Senate approved the bill by voice vote, sidestepping the roll call that usually accompanies major legislation in an anticlimactic moment for which only a handful of senators appeared. Sen. Robert Byrd search ), D-W.Va., was the only one to shout "Nay" let lawmakers sidestep the roll call that usually accompanies major legislation. That underscored the complicated political calculus presented by the measure, which was dominated by popular funds for U.S. forces but also sparked questions about Bush's postwar Iraq policies and record budget deficits at home. "As the president said time and time again, we will not walk away from Iraq," said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, a leading author of the bill. "We will not leave the Iraqi people in chaos, and we will not create a vacuum for terrorist groups to fill." In the latest blow to Iraq's U.S. occupiers, 19 Americans were killed there on Sunday. That included 16 soldiers who died when a missile brought down a U.S. Army transport helicopter west of Baghdad, a crash in which 20 other Americans were wounded.
