After the 1993 season, Bill Bates was selected by his teammates to receive the Ed Block Courage Award for successfully overcoming his injury in 1992. In 1995, Bill was named, by the fans and his teammates, the "Unsung Hero" award, which is given to one player from each NFL team. He has also been the recipient of the Dallas All Sports Association Courage Award. Bill has been a perennial selection for the All-Madden Team. Along with being on the Madden Summerall "ALL DALLAS COWBOY TEAM", Bill has subsequently, in 1999, been inducted into the Madden Hall of Fame. Starting with six years playing for legendary coach Tom Landry, Bill was an inspirational team leader and he exemplified the qualities of perseverance and dedication every time he stepped onto the field. Prior to the 1990 season, Jimmy Johnson tabbed Bill as the special teams' captain. Also, as Barry Switzer took over he made sure Bill's role would remain the same and held the position for Coach Switzer's five-year tenor. Bill, along with Ed "Too Tall" Jones shares the NFL record of playing 15 years for the Dallas Cowboys Football Club. His last minute interception at Chicago's Soldier Field preserved Dallas' 17-13 win in the team's triumphant return to the playoffs after a six year absence, and will surely go down as one of the big plays in the re-building of the Dallas Cowboys.

Sunday, July 19, 1998 Like Bill Bates, Mark Tuinei and Tony Tolbert should have a chance to say goodbye By Randy Galloway / The Dallas Morning News DALLAS You tell me. If Bill Bates deserves all this, meaning his own retirement media conference, where he also walked right into a Cowboys' coaching job; about 50 inches in this sports section devoted to the football life and times of Bates; plus being added to the Channel 11 sports staff as a football analyst and station goodwill ambassador ... . If Bates can exit the NFL player ranks with all these trumpets blaring, how does anyone explain the continuing sound of silence for Tony Tolbert and Mark Tuinei? Age and aching bones are breaking up the once-great Dallas dynasty, and when Chan Gailey took over as coach, he accelerated a retirement process that, frankly, had been allowed to drag. While Jerry Jones, who is in Wichita Falls, pointed out again Friday, "This is not a youth movement," he did hold on to some of his relics far too long. And it seems to have taken Gailey to remind Jerry of that.

Keynote Speaker An inspirational team leader, Bill exemplifies the qualities of perseverance and dedication every time he steps onto the field. Prior to the 1990 season, Jimmy Johnson tabbed Bill as the Cowboys' special teams captain. Also, as Barry Switzer took over he made sure his role would remain the same and has held the position for the last five years. In 1996, his leadership and intelligence helped the Dallas special teams become one of the NFL's very best. He is a very visible member of the Dallas nickel defense at middle linebacker position. His last minute interception at Chicago's Soldier Field preserved Dallas' 17 - 13 win in the team's triumphant return to the playoffs after a six year absence, and will surely go down as one of the big plays in the rebuilding of the Dallas Cowboys. Bates was one of only a handful of Dallas players who had previous post season experience as a Cowboy. One of the NFL's true success stories, Bill has been overcoming the odds his entire career, starting in 1983 when he made the team as a long shot free agent rookie. Bill immediately became a visible figure on the field with his ferocious special teams play. It was Bates' notoriety that helped propel the NFL into adding a spot on the Pro-Bowl teams for special teams coverage players. In 1984 he became the first NFC player so honored.

Cute story with colorful illustrations You'll cheer for Jeffrey the Jeep! It has a cute and meaningful story and colorful illustrations. It is not a board book and so is probably best for 4-8 years old but my 2 year old son loves it anyway. An inspiring story Fans of the Dallas Cowboys will love this down-to-earth story of one of their greatest heroes, Bill Bates, but anyone who follows pro football can enjoy this inspirational story. Bates begins by describing how he had always wanted to be a Cowboy and goes into detail about how he never allowed anyone to derail him from his dream of wearing the star on his helmet, even when he is bypassed in the NFL draft. His hard work and determination enabled him to carve out a long career as a special teams standout and starting safety despite being labelled "too slow" to play professionally and having to prove himself all over again with each new coach. The book is exceptionally readable, and Bates is candid with both his emotions and opinions. Even if you're not a Dallas fan, and I'm not, you can't help but cheer for Bill Bates at each twist and turn his career takes. The story at times seems more than a little corny, but it is a nice antidote for the image of spoiled pro athletes that is so prevalent these days.

Dallas Cowboys assistant coach Bill Bates throws balls to defensive back Kevin Smith during practice July 18 at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Bates may be reactivated as a player. The AP Bill Bates will coach, not play, in '98
IRVING, Texas (AP) Bill Bates' hopes of putting aside his coaching attire for one more season were dashed once and for all when the Dallas Cowboys decided not to activate him for the regular-season roster. Dallas could have put the 15-year veteran on the 60-man roster and beat an NFL deadline for doing so. If the Cowboys had signed the special teams star to play, he would have counted $325,000 against the salary cap. Bates, tied with Ed Jones and Mark Tuinei for most seasons in a Cowboys uniform, has become an assistant coach for the team. He had hoped for a part-time job on special teams or as a nickel linebacker. But Dallas has younger, faster players for both roles, and the team figured it didn't have the luxury of paying Bates. "Nobody wanted this to be a token year for Bill," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "This was in the best interest of the team. Bill and I talked about it."

It would be almost impossible for card companies to create a card for every player on every team, considering there are over 1600 current players in the NFL. So, only a few from each team make the cut each year. Below is a list of all the Cowboys who have had cards produced of them.
