Raiders let go of punter Leo Araguz and kicker Joe Nedney
Jon Gruden is very excited to have his new Raiders team come together.
August 27, 2000
ALAMEDA (AP):
The Raiders completed their special teams makeover Sunday when they cut punter Leo Araguz, kicker Joe Nedney and six other players to get down to the 53-player limit. Araguz was the team's punter the past three seasons but was beaten out for the job by rookie Shane Lechler, the NCAA record-holder for career punting average. Likewise, Nedney was signed by Oakland late last year and even kicked the game-winning field goal in the season-ending win over Kansas City. But Oakland took Sebastian Janikowski in the first round of the NFL draft, making Nedney expendable. The Raiders also released wide receivers Kenny Shedd, Marcus Knight and Rodney Williams, safety Je'Rod Cherry, tight end Derrick Walker, linebacker Sam Sword and running back Jerald Moore, their leading rusher in the preseason. In addition, Oakland traded defensive tackle Chuck Osborne to the Green Bay Packers and offensive lineman Gennaro DiNapoli to the Tennessee Titans. Both trades were for undisclosed draft picks. Oakland's opening-day roster will be decidedly different than it was a year ago, with 22 players that were not with the team in 1999.

AP EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota Vikings signed punter Leo Araguz on Tuesday, but they decided to keep rookie Eddie Johnson on the roster despite his recent struggles. Defensive lineman Cedric Killings, who has been inactive for all 14 games, was released. Araguz, who was in training camp with Kansas City this year, hasn't punted in a regular-season game since he was with Detroit in 2001. He spent four seasons with Oakland from 1996-99. Johnson, the Vikings' sixth-round draft pick out of Idaho State, is averaging 39.1 yards per punt - 15th in the NFC. He has mishandled a snap in each of the last three games, including a drop on Sunday against Chicago that led to a Bears field goal in a 13-10 defeat. AP NEWS

The Final 53 by Raider Hater

August 29, 2003
Well the preseaon is finally over, thank God, and now the countdown is on until the season opener next weekend. But there's still plenty of business yet to be done in Kansas City. Of course I'm talking about the final rounds of cuts that the Chiefs front office and coaching staff have to make between now and September 7th.
It won't be easy. A lot of players stepped up this preseason in an attempt to make the team. But it all comes down to simple numbers, and that final magic number is 53.
Here's my thoughts on who will take the field for the season opener. Please feel free to voice your opinion!
QB's (3)- Trent Green, Todd Collins and Jonathan Quinn. No surprises here. RB's (5)- Priest Holmes, Tony Richardson, Derrick Blaylock, Larry Johnson and Omar Easy. Jarmar Julien showed flashes this preseason and will likely be added to the practice squad. WR's (5)- Eddie Kennison, Johnnie Morton, Dante Hall, Marc Boerigter and Marvin Minnis. Curtis Jackson and Chris Horn both showed they could play in the NFL this preseason, but their just not quite ready to break into this talented receiving corps. Both are better on special teams than Minnis, but Snoop is clearly the superior receiver. Jackson and Horn will both likely be placed on the practice squad.

General Bears 13, Lions 10 The Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) - In a season of close calls, it was a predictable ending for the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions. Leon Johnson scored on a 1-yard run with 5:34 left and the Bears beat winless Detroit 13-10 Sunday when the Lions' Jason Hanson missed a 40-yard field goal with 21 seconds to go. ''There are no bad teams in the NFL. The games go down to the last four minutes and whoever makes the plays wins. They had an opportunity to tie it up and couldn't do it,'' Chicago's Mike Brown said. ''We've been in situations this year where anything can happen. We knew that. We're 9-2 and we'll take it,'' Brown said. Earlier this season, the Bears got two game-winning overtime interceptions from Brown on tipped passes and won another when Tampa Bay's Martin Gramatica hit the upright with a last-second field goal attempt. Some will say the Bears are more lucky than good.

League fines Horn $30,000 for end-zone phone call
By Wire services Published December 17, 2003 NEW ORLEANS - Saints receiver Joe Horn was fined $30,000 by the NFL for making a choreographed cell phone call in the end zone to celebrate a touchdown. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the amount. Horn's agent, Ralph Vitolo, said the player will appeal. "Fining him is one thing, but to me that's very excessive. This is not a murder case," Vitolo said. The Saints did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment. Return specialist Michael Lewis was fined $5,000 for helping orchestrate the stunt, and Horn told Vitolo he would pay it. After catching the second of four touchdowns in a 45-7 victory over the Giants on Sunday, Horn was handed a phone by Lewis, who pulled it out from under the padding used to protect the goal post. Horn was wearing his helmet when he punched in numbers, put the phone to the earhole and spoke into it for a few seconds.
