2004 Offseason Needs NFC North Green Bay Packers (Last Year: 10-6).
Season Summary:
Unrestricted Free Agents:
QB Doug Pederson, WR Antonio Freeman, TE Wesley Walls, G Marcus Spriggs, SS Antuan Edwards, P Josh Bidwell. Restricted Free Agents: OT Chad Clifton, CB Bhawoh Jue. Cap Status (as of 3/1): $2.77 million over. Offseason Needs:
  • Defensive End: Joe Johnson was a monumental disappointment last season. He basically took up roster space because he only made six tackles the whole year. Green Bay doesn't have the cap room to sign a quality defensive end, so they might use one of their first two picks on one.
  • Outside Linebacker: Outside linebacker is another position that the Packers need to address, but again, they don't have enough cap space to sign a premeir free agent.
  • Quarterback: This may be the year that the Packers draft Brett Favre's successor. If Phillip Rivers is available, it will most likely be him.
  • Defensive Back: Green Bay needs more depth in their secondary. They have solid starters, but their backups need to be upgraded.

Garcia, whose father is a first-generation Mexican American, came from the relative obscurity of the Canadian Football League, where he starred for five years before joining the 49ers as a second-string quarterback. Garcia, who can scramble and throw the bomb, has made of Tarrell Owens his chief target and has lead the 49ers to one of the most potent offenses in the NFC. With a stronger defense next season, his young team could contend for a Division title. In his second season as quarterback, Garcia has accumulated outstanding statistics almost as good as Young's. The 30-year-old native of Gilroy, Calif., played his first college football for his father, Bob, at Gavilan Community College. Later he starred at San Jose State where he caught the eye of Bill Walsh who followed his career in the Canadian league.

This Coach Helps the Best to Hit Their Stride
Doug Blevins has taught some of the best kickers in the NFL how to achieve and maintain peak performance even though he's never kicked a football (or even walked). Sometimes those who can't really do teach. From: Issue 38 September 2000, Page 48
    By: Todd Shapera
    Photographs by: Christopher Hartlove
URL: http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/38/coach.html Doug Blevins rolls onto the Miami Dolphins' practice field near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He is an odd sight amid the grunting, 300-pound linemen and the jackrabbit receivers. Sunburned and seated in a wheelchair done up in Dolphin orange and teal, a stopwatch hanging from his neck, Blevins is no football player. Clearly, though, he belongs. This fall, Blevins, 37, is entering his fourth season as the Dolphins' kicking coach. This is remarkable enough, since only one other team in the National Football League (the Dallas Cowboys) retains such a specialist. But here's the real kicker: Blevins himself has never attempted a field goal. He's never punted for any team, on any level, let alone in the NFL. Born with cerebral palsy, he has, in fact, never even walked. Those who can't, teach, the saying goes. But Blevins has built a career on turning that disdainful aphorism on its head, and in the unlikeliest of trades. The coach in the wheelchair takes raw athletes kids with mule-strong legs and turns them into NFL stars. Top kickers Leo Araguz of the Oakland Raiders and Adam Vinatieri of the New England Patriots have both hit their stride with the help of Doug Blevins. And last year, under Blevins's tutelage, Dolphins kicker Olindo Mare became one of the league's best, booting a record 39 field goals and converting 85% of his attempts.

American Bowls Highlight Third Preseason Week; 49ers Face Seahawks In Vancouver, Cowboys Play Patriots in Mexico City
This week, the NFL will add a 10th American Bowl city and return to the site of its all-time biggest crowd. Both scenarios take place in nationally televised American Bowl games as the NFL enters its third week of preseason action. On Saturday, the Seattle Seahawks the NFL's Pacific Northwest representative venture further north when they meet the San Francisco 49ers in Vancouver, British Columbia, the 10th city to host the NFL's international American Bowl series since it began in 1986. Vancouver joins Barcelona, Berlin, Dublin, London, Mexico City, Monterrey, Montreal, Tokyo and Toronto as American Bowl cities. The game will be played at B.C. Place, home of the British Columbia Lions, who are in their 45th season as members of the Canadian Football League. The NFL has forged an alliance with its CFL brethren to the north, and the leagues now work together in youth football development as well as marketing and sponsorship initiatives. The Seahawks-49ers Amer-ican Bowl will be televised by CBS-TV (8:00 PM ET), the first NFL game for the network since 1993. In 1962, CBS became the first network to televise all NFL games in a season.
