FEATURING FIBERGLASS CLAMSHELL DOMES
ASTRO HAVEN manufactures fiberglass atronomical observatories. It's clam shell dome design is low cost and opens up new avenues of space exploration to everyone from amateur astronomers to government research facilities like NASA, JPL, Sandia Labs, and university astronomy departments. Whether you need to house a small optical telescope for star gazing, create a planetarium and observatory for an astronomy club, or you have academic, research, or military requirements from astrophysics to range tracking, these low cost domes are the answer.
ASTRO HAVEN is located just east of Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. After years of using fiberglass in the development of General Aviation aircraft, ASTRO HAVEN founder, Mr. Grover Brotherston, turned his attention to applying this craftsmanship toward a cost effective solution for small astronomical observatories. ASTRO HAVEN is the only manufacturer of astronomical observatories with Mr. Brotherston's unique clamshell design.
Starting with designs for both conventional rotating domes as well as the efficient and flexible clamshell configuration, the market soon expressed it's preferrence for the simpler clamshell. The company has focussed on evolving a family of products and adding productivity features such as motorized clamshells and remote control.

observatory, orbiting, Astronomical Observatories
Related Category: Astronomical Observatories observatory, orbiting, research satellite designed to study solar radiation, electromagnetic radiation from distant stars, the earth's atmosphere , or the like. Because the atmosphere and other aspects of the earth's environment interfere with astronomical observations from the ground, especially in the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the spectrum, the decades since the 1960s have seen increasing emphasis on space-based observatories. The U.S. Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO) program, comprising eight satellites launched between 1962 and 1971, was one of the earliest series of orbiting observatories; it studied the sun's atmosphere and the sunspot cycle. Also beginning in 1962 and extending through 1979 were the launches of the six satellites in Great Britain's Ariel program, which concentrated on solar ultraviolet and X radiation. The Orbiting Geophysical Observatory (OGO) program consisted of six satellites, launched between 1964 and 1969, that provided data on the earth's atmosphere

The National Astronomical Observatories
Since the founding of the People's Republic of China half a century ago, astronomic research at CAS has achieved steady and sustained development in catching up with the advanced level of the international community and meeting the challenges posed by the national construction. Its research strengths have made tremendous improvement. Now almost all large-scale and sophisticated sky-watching facilities are managed by CAS astronauts, who have undertaken major research tasks commissioned by the State.
The new establishment of NAO is organizationally merged from five sky-watching stations, one center and three observational stations in the CAS system under a unified scheme for rational distribution and disciplinary development, and by well-coordinating the observational operation of large-scale and medium installations at CAS and the inauguration of a working network for astronomic research across the land. In addition, it is in charge of the macroscopic instruction and disciplinary guidance of the research assignments in the disciplinary.
After reshaping the original organizational units and the integration of strong points and six high-tech laboratories and during the coming decade, the NAO will step up its efforts in developing four up-to-date facilities: the large sky area multi-object fiber spectroscopic telescope (LAMOST), space solar telescope, large telescope and an observational base in southern China. The former three are aimed to create world records in the discipline. The construction of a southern China base is to make up the observational gap left in eastern China so that a surveying outpost is to be built in the land-locked southwest China to offset the unbalanced layout. Upon completion of all these projects, it is expected that Chinese astronomy will rank among those in the advanced countries by 2010.(Guo Haiyan, photos provided by Zhao Fuyuan)

More Small Astronomical Observatories > Customer Review #1: Good for giving ideas

This book is not a step-by-step guide. Moore never says it would be. It allows you to see what others have built and get ideas for your own observatory - what is a better/different way to do what I want. An added bonus is that his first book (Small Astronomical Observatories) is included as a CD in the back (I had been looking for it for a while with no luck).
Most observatories are going to be of simple construction. If you can drive a nail and cut a piece of wood, you are well on your way. A bit of cement work and you are 99% there. I used information from 4 units to design my own. Yes, some of the designs are on the internet and he gives web addresses where they exists. It meets my needs for information and I would not hesitate to suggest this book to anyone thinking about building a small observatory.
