Or so says a new theory, supported by stunning astronomical images and hard chemical analysis. For years most astronomers have imagined that the Sun and Solar System formed in relative isolation, buried in a quiet, dark corner of a less-than-imposing interstellar cloud. The new theory challenges this conventional wisdom, arguing instead that the Sun formed in a violent nebular environment - a byproduct of the chaos wrought by intense ultraviolet radiation and powerful explosions that accompany the short but spectacular lives of massive, luminous stars.

Sedna is currently about 13 billion km from Earth Astronomers have detected what could be the Solar System's 10th planet.
It was first seen by astronomers using California's Mount Palomar Observatory, and has been given the name "Sedna" after the Inuit goddess of the ocean. Observations show it measures about 1,180-2,360km (730-1,470 miles) across, making it similar in size to Pluto. Astronomers now say they have evidence that Sedna has its own moon, although this needs to be confirmed, and is also very red in colour. There is likely to be some debate about whether it qualifies as a true planet, but some scientists are already saying it re-defines our Solar System. Further than Pluto Sedna, or 2003 VB12, as it was originally designated, is the most distant object yet found orbiting our Sun. It is three times further away than Pluto (average distance to the Sun is 5.9 billion km or 3.6 billion miles). It was discovered using the Mt Palomar facility in November by astronomers from the California Institute of Technology, Yale Observatory and the Gemini Observatory.

News Flash!
On June 8, from roughly 5:00 to 11:30 a.m. (Greenwich time), Venus will undergo a rare transit of the Sun. That means that it will pass directly across the Sun's disk as seen from the Earth. The last time this happened was in 1882, so if it's visible, you should take the chance to see it. If you miss it, you'll have to wait another 8 years. If you miss that one, well, you've missed it for sure: the next transit isn't until 2117. I will be doing a series of live television interviews about the transit on the 8th. I have created a webpage with information about the transit and the times I will be on the air. Check for your local listings. May 6, 2004:

Historic Space Launch Attempt of SpaceShipOne Scheduled for June 21
Despite early achievements in space exploration during the 1960s, our "Space Age" is still in its infancy. We should expect to see many exciting "firsts" in space. The event scheduled for June 21, 2004, though, could have the biggest impact on space travel since Neil Armstrong made his own historic "small step" on July 20, 1969.
SpaceShipOne, a privately-developed rocket plane will launch into history on June 21 on a mission to become the world’s first commercial manned space vehicle. It will rocket to 100 kilometers (62 miles) into sub-orbital space above the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test Center, a commercial airport in the California desert. If successful, it will demonstrate that the space frontier is finally open to private enterprise. This event could be the breakthrough that will enable space access for future generations.

Astronomy at Foothill College
The Pleiades star cluster © Ken Lum, P.A.S. Discover the Universe at Foothill College! A wide range of academic and public programs in astronomy are offered both during the day and in the evening. The Astronomy Department at Foothill College offers lecture and laboratory classes conducted by Andrew Fraknoi . Courses in solar system and stellar astronomy provide students with a non-technical introduction to the development of solar systems, the life and death of stars, the formation of galaxies, and the evolution of the universe. Located on campus, the Foothill Observatory provides students and members of the community with the opportunity for first-hand exploration of the wonders of the universe. Regularly scheduled public programs provide close-up views of the sun, moon, stars, and planets through the observatory's telescopes. In cooperation with the Peninsula Astronomical Society , Foothill College is regularly visited by noted guest-lecturers in astronomy. Previous speakers have included Clyde Tombaugh recounting his discovery of the planet Pluto, and Professor Geoff Marcy of San Francisco State University making the first announcement of the discovery of one of the planets his team has found around other stars. The Peninsula Astronomical Society holds its meetings on the campus of Foothill College on the second Friday of each month. Meetings feature lectures by prominent members of the professional and amateur communities, and are open to the public.
