Tips for beginners, plus images of the moon and planets with film and CCD.

Amateur CCD and Film Astrophotography Introduction: My name is Kevin Brennan and I observe from the Northeast. I also have an observing location deep in the mountains with better skies. The limiting mag in my backyard is often 5.5 to 5.7 at zenith with a little sky glow to the south. The air is usually not real steady which is why you won't see many solar system pics. I have been interested in astronomy since I was a kid. Unfortunately like many others, a cheezy departement store scope spoiled my interest for a long time. I have been an ameteur photographer since childhood and figured that astrophotography would be an excellent compliment to my astronomy hobby. This page contains some modest attempts. I am only a casual imager, especially with CCD. I quickly learned that if you want to obtain some good results, be prepared to spend time and money. I have also included a few " tips from a beginner " that hopefully will help those out there just getting started. ASTROIMAGING FILTERS There has been much development in the area of imaging filters. Various manufacturers are now producing RGB filters for color imaging. Many CCD imagers are now using specialized filters as part of an LRGB imaging process substituting Halpha for L. Other specialized filters such as Oxygen III, Hbeta and sulfur have also been utilized. The following is a link to a discussion group dedicated to discussing these filters and related subjects.

SCIENCE FEATURES FUN STUFF 30 Great Astronomical Images: Honorable mentions
The September 2003 issue of Astronomy Magazine features 30 great images from the past 30 years. Here are some favorites that didn't make the cut.
In the September issue of Astronomy , Art Director Tom Ford chose 30 images that have changed our view of the universe in the last three decades. It was difficult narrowing the list to 30, so here we include a few runners-up.
M17 is also known as the Omega Nebula.
NASA / ESA / J. Hester (ASU)
The Hubble Space Telescope took this beautiful picture of a small region in the M17 nebula This image of gullies in an impact crater is one of the highest-resolution pictures taken by Mars Global Surveyor's Mars Orbiter Camera. NASA / JPL / MSSS Water may have flowed very recently on Mars, as evidenced by images taken from the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft. Images such as this one seem to show water-carved gullies along rocky outcrops inside crater walls.

A gallery of Mark McCaughrean's astronomical images
This is a gallery of various astronomical images, but unlike most such gingerbread men (or cookie-cutter, for our North American friends) collections you'll find on the web, all of these are original images from my own work, many of them not published elsewhere (to my continued shame). They are mostly taken at near-infrared wavelengths, but also there are also some optical-wavelength images from the Hubble Space Telescope, and so on. Despite the fact that each image is signed with my name (it's not just vanity, honest; see below), most of them come from work done in collaboration with other people, and the appropriate credits are given in the text caption given next to each image, along with details of where the data were taken, the field-of-view covered, and so on. If you copy an image for purely private use, I request that you also carry the caption along too, to make clear the origin and ownership of the image. For absolutely any other use, any public display, use in a talk (academic or otherwise), publication in a book (commercial or otherwise), and so on, you must read and contact me.
