A Recipe for Cooking Up Astronomical Images
Jayanne English
Jayanne English currently enjoys the teaching and research activities associated with being an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. Her forte' is creating colour outreach images from astronomy data and currently she is enjoying working with radio images, like the Cygnus Region , as part of her research work as a member of the International and Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (I/CGPS) . Jayanne's research interests include the behaviour of gas in groups of galaxies that are interacting with each other, and the how mass and energy are exchanged between a galaxy's spiral disk and its halo. In particular she is obsessed with the I/CGPS data showing a mushroom-shaped cloud bursting more than 1000 light-years out of the plane of the Milky Way.
Introduction
Bold colour images from telescopes act as extraordinary ambassadors for astronomers because they pique the public's curiosity. But are they snapshots documenting physical reality? Or are we looking at artistic space-scapes created by digitally manipulating astronomy images? In my view, each image is a battlefield where the attempts by scientists to represent their discoveries all but drowns out the voice of visual literacy, smothering the colour and composition clues we usually use to read images. Fortunately, sometimes in this battle between the cultures of science and visual art, both sides win. An image is produced that simultaneously contains scientific meaning and is visually engaging.

Jayanne English's Astronomy Images
Contrary to what you hear, astronomy images that you see in the newspapers, magazines, and television are not "snapshots". They are constructed out of black and white data files by a person assigning a single colour to each of the selected data files and then by combining these single colour images to form a multicolour image. Even when astronomers use telescopes like the Hubble Space Telescope, the data are often from radiation that our human eyes can't detect (like infrared radiation). At the bottom of this page are links to information about how images are constructed and the issue of "true colour". contact me The Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS) Image Gallery
These images use the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory. An array of radio antennas in Penticton, British Columbia. Our eyes do not detect radiation from the radio spectrum but we wouldn't want to ignore these data. Radio telescopes capture the emission from the material between stars: cold gas, fast moving particles (called Cosmic Rays), and magnetic fields. This allows us to study star formation, star death, the structure of galaxies and the motions of galaxies and the material within them. The CGPS is now part of the International Galactic Plane Survey; both surveys study our home galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy.
Most of the current colour images at the CGPS Image Gallery have been put together by me with support by Russ Taylor (University of Calgary).

My Astronomy Images In Christmas '99 I purchased a low light b/w security video camera from Allthing in Perth. Until now it has been used at prime focus(no lens and put in place of the eyepiece). I have been able to get a few reasonable shots of Saturn and the moon Jupiter is still a tricky one to image. See Shots for 2002 below for my best so far. I have attempted some deep sky work with very poor results, as you will see. The film camera is giving far better results for deep sky. The following are images of various objects I have studied while at UCSC. Any colors are quasi-false colors, derived from black and white images taken through different color filters. So, the colors are probably not what you would see with your own eye, but they should be kinda close. For other pretty astronomy pictures, check out the Hubble Heritage Project website or the Pretty Pictures directory at the NRAO. This image of NGC 3656 (the name stands for "New General Catalog" entry #3656) reveals the galaxy to be fairly irregular in shape. The averaged light profile looks like an elliptical galaxy, but unlike an elliptical galaxy, we see dust lanes and a loop of light to the upper left. My guess would be that this elliptical has recently merged with another galaxy, and is in the process of swallowing another. The image was taken at the Keck Observatory using the LRIS imaging spectrometer. A larger version of the image is available.
