The Summer of Mars, when the red planet was closer than it had been in nearly 60,000 years, engaged even the most casual skywatchers around the world. Telescope supplies were depleted. Bars in Arizona threw Mars observing parties. While astronomers captured the moment with big observatories, regular folks held digital cameras up to telescope eyepieces to create their own personal Martian photo albums. Later, in November, the second total lunar eclipse of the year and one of the most colorful in memory caused another round of excitement in the amateur ranks. The digital pictures from backyards and balconies were as remarkable as they were plentiful. Among the standout amateur images (No. 8 on this list) was a photo of a strange object in the sky that had astronomers wholly intrigued but left them utterly mystified.

The image was taken on the morning of Sunday 25 Feb 1996 (UT 24.77 Feb 96) after a night imaging for Kuiper Belt Objects. The ion tail is visible, stretching towards the top left of the image. The image is 28 arcmin by 17 arcmin and is a combination of a 60 second R band exposure, an 80 second V band exposure and a 100 second B band exposure. The magnitudes of the comet are approximately R=7.6, V=6.9 and B=7.5. Eta Carinae Nebula An image of the Eta Carinae nebula taken by Michael Brown with a CCD camera on the 40-inch telescope at Siding Spring Observatory. This image contains some of the brightest stars known in our galaxy. One of these stars, Eta Carinae, is the very bright star near the centre of the image. Astronomy I've been interested in astronomy since I was a kid. I got interested again a few years ago and began using a CCD camera to capture images of various deep space objects. While these pictures aren't state of the art, they're black and white for one thing,they are moderatly interesting. They were all taken with an ST-4 camera from SBIG. Unfortunetly SBIG isn't making Mac compatible software for their latest cameras so I can't upgrade to a better camera. Given that the Mac is clearly the best platform for image processing, unless you can get a UNIX workstation, this is unfortunete. The images were taken with a Celestron C-8, the shorter exposures, or an LX-200 telescope. All were taken from my backyard in a highly light polluted area. The pole star is often an averted vision object. Galaxy M81 pictured before the supernova Galaxy M81 with the supernova . Notice the extra star in the upper middle right of the picture.
