And, a Pluto year last 284 Earth years!! In the Sky Maps section, you can check out what's happening in the November sky. There's going to be a meteor shower in the early, early morning on November 17 and 18. And, on the evening of November 27, Jupiter will be very close to the moon. Astronomy for Kids
by Stanley Yen (stan@triumf.ca)
Vancouver, BC, Canada No other area of science excites the public imagination in quite the same way that astronomy does. Astronomy deals with the entire universe, in all its grandeur and richness. Who can look at the seemingly countless stars and not feel a sense of awe? Astronomy is both esthetically beautiful and scientifically fascinating, and the sheer size of the universe and humankind's insignificance by comparison is food for philosophical contemplation. Every amateur astronomer knows something of both the esthetic and intellectual pleasures of studying astronomy as a hobby. It is our duty as amateur astronomers to share some of this with the general public, and with young people in particular, who might otherwise be impoverished for not having experienced it. To this end, I have prepared the following sample sky tour with commentary. "Hi kids, come on in and have a look through my telescope. Have you ever looked through a telescope before? I use it on clear nights to tour the universe. It's sort of like my own personal spaceship. Here, I'll shine my flashlight on the telescope so you can have a good look at it. (Use the white-light flashlight that you use for setting up). Here at the front, there is a big lens to collect as much light as possible. We need a big lens to collect lots of light because some things in the sky are very dim. So if we look through this telescope that collects lots of light, those dim objects will look much brighter.
