At the same time, some of life's most fascinating journeys are the ones we don't plan.
In the Sky Maps section, you can find out what's going on in the sky this month. We provide maps and charts for June's sky highlights, including which planets are visible and how to see them. This month, Venus transits the Sun for the first time in one hundred and twenty-two years.

Historic Space Launch Attempt of SpaceShipOne Scheduled for June 21
Despite early achievements in space exploration during the 1960s, our "Space Age" is still in its infancy. We should expect to see many exciting "firsts" in space. The event scheduled for June 21, 2004, though, could have the biggest impact on space travel since Neil Armstrong made his own historic "small step" on July 20, 1969.
SpaceShipOne, a privately-developed rocket plane will launch into history on June 21 on a mission to become the world’s first commercial manned space vehicle. It will rocket to 100 kilometers (62 miles) into sub-orbital space above the Mojave Civilian Aerospace Test Center, a commercial airport in the California desert. If successful, it will demonstrate that the space frontier is finally open to private enterprise. This event could be the breakthrough that will enable space access for future generations.

VENUS
Is the closest planet to the Earth. It is about the same size as the Earth.
Is the second planet in order from the Sun. It is about 108 million kilometers from the Sun.
Makes one complete orbit around the Sun every 224.7 days.
Rotates on its axis more slowly than any other planet. It completes one rotation in about 243 days and 24 minutes.
Is the brightest object in our sky, besides the Sun and Moon.
Has no satellites.

Diameter

Length of Day

Length of Year 225 Earth days Named for Roman goddess of beauty Visited by Galieo, Magellan, Mariner 10 and others Beauty Can Be Only Skin Deep The second planet from the Sun has been named for the Roman goddess of love and beauty. When you see it in the morning or evening sky, or if you are lucky enough to have a telescope, you would agree with this name. However, if you were unfortunate enough to be dropped onto the surface of this planet, you would find that it is a very unpleasant place indeed. The atmosphere of Venus is made up almost entirely of clouds of sulfuric acid, the temperature stays constant at around nine hundred degrees Fahrenheit and winds on the surface blow constantly at hundreds of miles per hour. The atmospheric pressure on the surface of Venus is much like that in the ocean here on Earth at a depth of around half a mile. It is an extremely dangerous place, and the two spacecraft that have landed on Venus have managed to survive for just long enough to send back a few pictures before they were crushed by the pressure of the atmosphere and melted by the extremely high temperatures.

The Topic:
Astronomy
Easier - Astronomy is the study of things found in space such as the sun, planets, moons, and stars. Harder - Astronomy, one of the oldest sciences, is the study of celestial bodies such as planets, stars, and other objects in space. Astronomers locate objects in the daytime or nighttime skies and measure their magnitudes and motions, searching to find what they are made of and how they create their light. Astronomy for Kids
