CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO
SURVEY ASTRONOMY EDUCATION RESEARCH LITERATURE
See Bibliography to date Download MS Word version of Bibliography It has become clear that the astronomy education community needs a comprehensive canvas of the educational research literature to create an annotated bibliography of articles describing astronomy education results. As these articles are spread across many different journals, we are asking for volunteers to complete a survey of one of the following journals. Although there are probably no more than 6-10 articles in any 10 volumes of a journal, it would be an enormous task for just one person. For each of the journals listed below, we need one person to volunteer to go to their library and record the formal reference for articles on astronomy and space science education topics and create a 25-word description of the work. We anticipate that this task should take approximately 2 hours; please use the format listed below . The complete list will be distributed on the AAS Education WWW site. If you are interested in helping out in this astronomy and space science education project, please select a first and second choice from the journal volumes listed below and email Dave Bruning (University of Wisconsin-Parkside) at

The foundation hopes to provide astronomy education at two formal levels. Firstly, a certificate of amateur astronomy is an introduction to the science and hobby of astronomy, and secondly, the diploma course is a more intensive study of various aspects of astronomy and some advanced amateur techniques. The courses are divided into a number of modules. The certificate course has two modules while the diploma course consists of five separate modules. Each module may be studied separately, however completion of all modules is required to obtain the formal award.

For the Beginner
For the beginning sky watcher, I prepare monthly all-sky charts to help people learn the constellations. I hope soon to allow this to be run interactively. You may get my chart for September here . These charts are published monthly in the York University faculty newspaper, The Gazette. You are invited to come to the public tours at York University Observatory , which I volunteer with.
Free Planisphere:
Want to learn the sky? You may get a free planisphere here . A planisphere allows one to see what the sky will look like at any time throughout the year. They sell in bookstores for about $15 but you can make your own for about 60 cents!

Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand Astronomy Education in New Zealand The Education Section of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand promotes the teaching of Astronomy throughout New Zealand. The Education news group website http://www.egroups.com/group/astroednz provides a forum for the exchange of information related to the teaching of Astronomy. The Education Section also publishes a quarterly magazine "GALAXY - TE KORURANGI" a 16 page magazine for children with information on the night sky, space and astronomy articles, stories, cartoons and puzzles. Further information can be found at the GALAXY website . The GALAXY Editor is Marilyn Head, marilyn@actrix.gen.nz In addition to the above, resources and assistance to science educators and school parties are provided by many of the local astronomical societies throughout New Zealand. Such resources can be of great help to teachers wishing to provide quality learning experiences in Astronomy for their pupils and also to help with the professional development of science teachers themselves. See below for examples of services provided in different regions in New Zealand. Education Services Provided by Local Astronomical Societies

      Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) is a teaching and learning strategy combining frequent Web-based preparatory assignments with classroom activities that promote active learning. The instructor incorporates the questions from the Web assignments into class, setting the level of discussion based on students' responses; this makes classroom activities both more efficient and more closely tuned to students' needs. Completing these preparatory assignments several times each week encourages students to keep up with the material by studying throughout the week.

    Photo taken 5-11-01 by K. Kulzer The N.A.A. has operated the Glen D. Riley Observatory since it's construction was the new club's first big project, back in 1973. The observatory has been an anchor for the club in all the years since, and the focus of many club activities, both public and private. Thousands of visitors, young and old, have had chances to view the wonders of the heavens through the facility's main telescope and many portables out on the lawns as our guests. Club members can become keyholders to the observatory, and make use of it at their leisure.
    In 1990, the observatory was relocated to a new spot on the large parcel of City of Naperville land which has always been its home. At that time, the small, 10' diameter building was replaced by a larger one, allowing larger groups to be served, as well as providing storage and warm-up space. In return for the use of the City's land, and the security it provides to our facility, we provide regular opportunities for the public to visit us. For information on our public evenings, see the More Information page; for information on scheduling observing sessions for community, school, and youth groups, see our

    Abstract. Sommaire. Introduction
    • The government;
    • External agents;
    • The interests of individuals or groups of scientists and teachers.
    The above three factors have strongly influenced the past and present status of astronomy education in Zambia. We will address the combination of these factors within the context of current activities in space science in Zambia to explain their influence on the development of astronomy education. Curriculum development Zambia's educational practices are based on conceptions of education and science derived from colonial experience. Our history of colonial rule, combined with the post-independence government policy on science education and research has unfortunately resulted in low levels of scientific and technological progress. A central body, currently known as Curriculum Development Centre (CDC), has always developed the school curriculum, during both colonial and postcolonial eras. CDC is a government body and its approach to curriculum development is largely determined by government policy on social and economic needs of the country. CDC is responsible for developing curricula for all primary and secondary schools, pre-schools and preservice primary school teacher training programs.
