Radio Astronomy Imaging Group
Modern astronomical telescopes collect data at rates at least an order of magnitude higher than instruments of only a decade ago. Gigabyte-sized data sets are now fairly common in radio astronomical and some optical projects. Telescopes being planned now have even higher data rates and will produce data sets tens of Gigabytes in size. To be productive, astronomers require tools to visualize large data sets and to monitor the progress of the data from a remote instrument from their desktop. Since on-line repositories for journal articles, images, and data files became available, there have been large amounts of such material archived. Besides the problem of processing large data sets, there is the difficulty in finding comparison data in existing archives. An essential aspect of data archives is the ability to visually browse them to determine what data are necessary to carefully compare to ones' own data or theoretical models. When the data that are necessary for comparison are obtained, visual tools for combining and displaying the data are needed. The proliferation of web-based data archives and large data rates from more powerful astronomical instruments motivate us to develop tools to enable astronomers to extend their research.

The Astrophysics Data System (ADS) is a NASA-funded project which maintains four bibliographic databases containing more than 3.9 million records: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Instrumentation, Physics and Geophysics, and preprints in Astronomy. The main body of data in the ADS consists of bibliographic records, which are searchable through our Abstract Service query forms , and full-text scans of much of the astronomical literature which can be browsed though our Browse interface
For more information, please read our page detailing the Terms and Conditions regulating the use of our resources.
In addition to its databases, the ADS provides access and pointers to a wealth of external resources, including electronic articles, data catalogs and archives. We currently have links to over 4.0 million records maintained by our collaborators.
The importance of ADS's role in supporting the scientific community has been recognized by societies and individuals . If you wish to acknowledge us in a publication, kindly use a phrase such as the following:

STARCAT is now becoming obsolete. Use it only to access astronomical catalogues or request special file types. The WDB interface should now be used for accessing the ESO or HST archives.
STARCAT is a User Interface to a set of services available to astronomers and archival researchers. These services can be grouped in two main classes: You can start starcat by rlogin -l starcat ac6.hq.eso.org (no password required).
To retrieve off-line data you have to register as an archive user New features with STARCAT version 5.21 (Feb 96) include:
    • Available for both SunOS and Solaris Inter-screen navigation. Data request submission tool (for both ESO and HST archives) New catalogues.
    • A connection to the SIMBAD astronomical name server at the CDS in Strasbourg, France.
A complete list of new features can be found in the STARCAT v5.21 release notes

    Data and Archive Centers
1st High Energy Astrophysics Observatory ( HEAO 1. GSFC. NASA )
The first of NASA's three High Energy Astronomy Observatories, HEAO 1 was launched aboard an Atlas Centaur rocket on 12 August 1977 and operated until 9 January 1979. During that time, it scanned the X-ray sky almost three times over 0.2 keV - 10 MeV, provided nearly constant monitoring of X-ray sources near the ecliptic poles, as well as more detailed studies of a number of objects through pointed observations.
Advanced Stars: a Tool for Relating Informations and Data ( ASTRID )
ASTRID is a data base of stars in an advanced evolutionary stage, peculiarly of red giants, AGB and post-AGB variables. The database gathers in the same tool observational data with comments and results from models.
It is developed at GRAAL (Montpellier, France).
    Aladin Sky Atlas
Aladin is an interactive sky atlas, developed at CDS (Strasbourg, France), allowing the user to visualize digitized images of any part of the sky, to superimpose entries from astronomical catalogs or personal user data files, and to interactively access related data and information from the Simbad, NED, and Vizier databases for all known objects in the field.
The set of sky images consists of the STScI Digital Sky Survey (DSS-I and DSS-II), as well as an ensemble of higher resolution images (ESO-R and SERC plates) digitized at the MAMA facility in Paris.

    ASTRO - FTP LIST
    Updated 1 July 1995
This is a extensive list of anonymous-ftp file servers containing astronomy and space research related material. I have included only those servers containing special subdirectories for astro stuff or much material included into a general directories. This list is not a complete data set of possible places so I would be very happy of all kind of notices and information depending on this listing. For sites with multiple directories of interest I have pointed towards a common top-level directory. I count on you for updates as to the contents and other pertinent information regarding these sites. This HTML version is experimentalplease send suggestions and comments to astroftp@seds.lpl.arizona.edu . I could not have done this without the help of Wenjeng Ko, my supervisor/programming mentor at lpl.a rizona.edu I recommend that you save this file (Save As HTML) and use it from your machine. This file is available via anonymous-ftp as: ftp://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/pub/faq/astroftp.html
