Coming: Access to Orbit "Making space happen" is for me a phrase that conjures up visions of the world as portrayed in "2001: A Space Odyssey". But of course the world portrayed in that 1968 film one with routine space travel has not come to pass. Now, 45 years beyond our first, tentative journeys into space, that situation begs the question: Why not? Paula Berinstein's book is a valuable component of the answer to that question. One reason is that Ms. Berinstein understands business and finance. Indeed, she makes her living advising others on business ventures. For this book (her sixth), she spent three years researching the economics of such ventures as tourism in space, and interviewing many of the movers and shakers in this burgeoning, but largely unnoticed, area. Its publication is well-timed, for today the biggest barriers to getting into space are not technical ones; they are political and economic ones. This is why business sense is the important asset. Good businessmen with an interest in space space entrepreneurs are not so common as the techies; but they do exist. This book profiles a number of them, revealing that while getting into space is no cakewalk, it need not be as difficult as the powers that be maintain. One example is the chapter on Jim Benson. He took a look at NASA's Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) mission, with its $250 million price tag, and decided it could be done a lot cheaper by the private sector. A feasibility study done in 1997 by industry experts confirmed that $25 million would do it. An order-of-magnitude cost reduction is not bad. (And note that this is with the existing stable of launch vehicles themselves much more expensive than they might be.)

Now that you have some feeling for the scales of time and space that astronomy This chapter covers the development of western astronomy and modern science. I focus on the rise of modern science in Europe, from the ancient Greeks to Isaac Newton. Other cultures were also quite interested and skilled in astronomy (the Mayans (link will display in another window), Egyptians, peoples of India and China come immediately to mind), but the Greeks were the first ones to try to explain how the universe worked in a logical, systematic manner using models and observations. Modern astronomy (and all of science) has its roots in the Greek tradition. If you would like a more thorough discussion of the history of astronomy than what I will present here, please take a look at Science and the Human Prospect by Ronald Pine (links will display in another window). I will give dates of when certain persons lived and worked to give you some reference points in the long history of astronomy. Don't worry about memorizing the dates. What is more important is to see the development of ideas and methods of modern science. I include images of world atlases from different time periods in this chapter and the next as another way to illustrate the advances in our understanding of our world and the universe. Transit of Venus On 8th June 2004 a transit of Venus will be observed from Earth when Venus comes directly between the Sun and our planet and it will be seen to move across the bright solar disk. No-one currently living on the planet has ever witnessed this spectacle as it last happened in 1882. Scientists at the School of Physics and Astronomy will be recording the transit and we hope to show still shots from that recording on this page from the 8th June. To watch a live webcast of the event, visit http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/ or tune in to the programme on BBC2 featuring Dr Paul Roche and Dr Lucie Green from Cardiff University who will be reporting live from Egypt and the Royal Greenwich Observatory. The transit will start at around 6.19am British Summer Time and end around 12.23pm. If you want to get prepared, don't miss the FREE morning session by Dr Lucie Green to be given at the Centre for Lifelong Learning on Saturday 5th June, from 10.30-12.30. No booking is required.
