About the Northwest Suburban Astronomers
We are a group of amateur astronomers from the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, with a wide range of interests and experience. Our current membership is around 130 people. Members range in experience from beginners and casual stargazers to experienced telescope makers and astrophotographers. Meetings are held once a month on the Friday closest to the full moon, at Blackhawk Recreational Center , which is located on Higgins Road about one mile west of the intersection of Golf and Higgins Roads, in Hoffman Estates . Meetings normally start at 7:30pm. Non-members are always welcome to attend our meetings. We offer a number of services for members. We have a number of observing sites with dark skies for use of members only, but we also host public observing sessions at these sites. Club telescopes are available for rental, as well as slide sets for programs and presentations. A monthly Newsletter, the Celestial Log , contains information on upcoming meetings and observing sessions, and articles by members. The Northwest Suburban Astronomers are a chartered non-for-profit organization in the State of Illinois.

Original Version: PASP, November 1994. Abstract: The amount of data produced by large observational facilities and space missions has led to the archiving and on-line accessibility of much of this data, available to the entire astronomical community. This allows a much wider multi-frequency approach to astronomical research than previously possible. Here we provide an overview of these services, and give a basic description of their contents and possibilities for accessing them. Apart from services providing observational data, many of those providing general information, e.g. on addresses, bibliographies, software etc. are also described. The field is rapidly growing with improved network technology, and our attempt to keep the report as complete and up-to-date as possible will inevitably be outdated shortly. We will endeavor to maintain an updated version of this document on-line. Limits on Jovian Planets in the Milky Way
Analysis of 43 microlensing events from five years of PLANET team monitoring data has revealed no indication of the short-lived ``wiggles'' that planets orbiting the lens would create on light curves of the backround stars. At the level of the observational uncertainties, all light curves were consistent with those due to an isolated stellar lens. The lack of any detected planetary signature in these 43 events implies that less than 1/3 of M-dwarfs have Jupiter-mass companions orbiting at 1.5 to 4 AU. M-dwarfs are cool, low-mass stars that make up the bulk of stars (and microlenses) in the Galaxy. One AU is the distance from Earth to our Sun. The data are now available. Read more here

Greetings!
Greetings and salutations, enlightened web traveller! You have found the home page of the Twin City Amateur Astronomers , bringing astronomy to the masses in the twin cities of Bloomington-Normal, Illinois, and the surrounding county. Since 1960, the members of the Twin City Amateur Astronomers have explored the heavens, sought to share the joys of astronomy with the community, and generally just have a good time. These web pages represent an extension of our mission: now we are not only bringing astronomy to the masses in situ , as it were, but in a virtual way, to people hunched over their computer monitors. Hey, people, straighten up!

Historic Space Launch Set For June 21
Posted: June 3, 2004 The White Knight turbojet aircraft climbs over the Mojave desert with SpaceShipOne attached below its body.
SpaceShipOne, A privately-developed rocket plane, will launch from its taxi vehicle on June 21 to become the world’s first commercial manned space vehicle. SpaceShipOne’s sub-orbital flight will lasts 25 minutes and spend about three minutes outside the Earth's atmosphere at 62 miles in altitude. SpaceShipOne was designed by Burt Rutan and his California-based aerospace company Scaled Composites . SpaceShipOne will compete for the Ansari X Prize , an international competition to create a reusable aircraft that can launch three passengers into sub-orbital space, return them safely home, then repeat the launch with the same vehicle.
