addition to these nowfamous works by andrew, wyeth Three Generations will feature paintings by andrew s father, noted illustrator NC wyeth; andrew s son Jamie

The dramatic, vivid illustrations of N.C., the quiet, introspective paintings of Andrew, and the revealing portraits and mysterious allegories of Jamie have earned members of the Wyeth family important places in the history of American art. This summer The Speed Art Museum will present an exhibition featuring the works of three generations of this compelling family of artists. Andrew Wyeth (American, born 1917)
Cape Coat , 1982, Drybrush At the heart of this exhibition is a group of watercolor and tempera paintings and pencil sketches by Andrew Wyeth depicting one of his favorite models, Helga Testorf. Recognized as one of the leaders of the realist tradition, Andrew Wyeth met Helga, a 38-year-old Prussian immigrant, in his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in 1971. Working secretly over the next 15 years, Andrew created approximately 45 paintings and 200 sketches of Helga, many of which will be featured in the exhibition. In addition to these now-famous works by Andrew, Wyeth: Three Generations will feature paintings by Andrew's father, noted illustrator N.C. Wyeth; Andrew's son Jamie, an accomplished painter and illustrator in his own right; and Andrew's sisters, Carolyn, Henriette, and Ann.

    Christina's World - Wyeth, Andrew 36" x 29"
    Christina's World
Andrew Wyeth's reputation has centered around watercolors and egg tempera paintings such as "Christina's World". Painted in 1948 and later purchased by the Museum of Modern Art, this is one of the most recognized paintings in American art. Egg Tempera Techniques by Michael Bergt Egg tempera is a fast drying medium that is fluid by nature and must be applied thinly in semi-opaque and transparent layers. The binding qualities of the egg does not allow for impasto painting. Because of tempera's fluid, fast drying property, it is best suited for a more linear style rather than the thick, brushy and painterly technique of oil painting. Egg tempera has a clean, matte finish and a higher color key than oil. The subtle color variations so characteristic of egg tempera painting are unlike the deep saturated colors typical in oil paints. Therefore, the palette used in tempera only includes the colors which work best in tempera. The yellow of the egg has very little effect on a tempered color. Any initial discoloring will actually bleach out to a clear tone in time as opposed to oil's tendency to yellow with time.

    110. Haber's Art Reviews: Andrew Wyeth And Arthur Dove At The Whitney
Is American art provincial? Review by John Haber of andrew wyeth, Arthur Dove, and a remodeled Whitney Museum. andrew wyeth Unknown Terrain. Arthur Dove.
    John Haber
    in New York City
    Andrew Wyeth: Unknown Terrain
    Arthur Dove
The Whitney Museum of American Art has a problem. I mean its name: it is stuck with all this American art. How provincial! Right now, the Whitney does not seem to mind a bit. In fact, it wallows in provincialism, or at least the original provinces. This spring it showed Arthur Dove , an early modernist who left for New England as if to hide from Cubism. And now its summer extravaganza features Andrew Wyeth's landscapes , along with a rehanging of the permanent collection so conservative that even Wyeth might like it. Has American art no way out of the back woods? Maybe, I shall argue, the Whitney can use a better sense of time and place. I might as well start with the present: what could be tricky about showcasing American art?
    Bunkering down
America definitely does not face a shortage of artists. Try to support yourself painting, assuming you can find affordable studio space even in Brooklyn. New York has not lost its global influence either. Minimalism and Pop Art sell better abroad, and the Guggenheim Museum has paved over more of the world than Dow Chemical during the Vietnam War. Besides, Postmodernism really makes creative sense only as the perpetual death knoll of good old American Modernism and the American century Nothing fails like success, though, including American culture. It walks like world art and talks like world art, so maybe it is a duck, and the embarrassing rubber kind, too. That leaves the Whitney with a tough choice.
