John Lucas Tupper
John Lucas Tupper , a minor Pre-Raphaelite sculptor, poet, theorist of art education, and Rugby drawing master, wrote this contemporary appreciation of his friend Woolner. The essay first appeared in The Portfolio and was scanned from the reprinted book version: English Artists of the Present Day. Essays by J. Beavington Atkinson, Sidney Colvin, F. G. Stephens, Tom Taylor, and John L. Tupper . London: Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday, 1872, 56-60. Following the house style of the Victorian Web , titles of works appear in bold font rather than between single quotes. I have also added more paragraphing to Tupper's text. [ GPL The artist whose name is henceforth to shed splendour upon the Royal Academy , as well as upon this country, and whose works we are about to notice, has perhaps better claims than any sculptor since Flaxman to be associated with the poet-artists. Why artists in marble are, for the most part, so much more nearly allied to stone-masons than their pictorial brothers are to house-painters, is a question too deeply founded in aesthetics, and perhaps in ethics, for present discussion, though the subject of this notice being a happy exception to the modern rule, is an event we may safely ascribe to the fact of his having been by nature's design a poet in the first place, and a sculptor only in the second. Twenty years back, when Mr. Woolner was unknown to the world, he contributed to a short-lived periodical, called The Germ , a poem which, for originality of style and matter, should have conferred upon its author (even had his subsequent matured work been wanting) the rank of no common poet.

'Thomas Woolner'
Thomas Woolner was born on the I7th December 1825 at Hadleigh, Suffolk, and came to London in 1838, where he studied sculpture under William Behnes. He attended the Royal Academy Schools from 1842, and first exhibited in 1843. Through Rossetti met William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and agreed that their views on art were applicable to sculpture, so he accepted membership of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 - the only sculptor to be a member. He was also a poet, and contributed to the Pre-Raphaelite magazine 'The Germ'. Some six years later he left for Australia to seek a wealthier life, and his Pre-Raphaelite brothers drew a famous collection of portraits of each other to send to him. He returned to England in 1854 with an enhanced reputation, and became popular as a sculptor of intellectuals - such s Wordsworth, Tennyson, Browning, Gladstone and Darwin. He married Alice Waugh on 6 September 1864, later becoming William Holman Hunt’s brother-in-law when Hunt married Edith Waugh in 1875. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1875, and was Professor of Sclupture there from 1877 to 1879. He also did occasional architectural such as the Manchester Assize Courts.

Thomas Woolner in Manchester
[This page has been kindly contributed by Paul Barlow, an authority on Woolner.] Woolner's most important works in Manchester were statues of kings and law-givers commissioned from him to decorate the Assize courts built by the architect Alfred Waterhouse . Sadly, the building was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, but most of Woolner's statues were rescued and are now housed in the new buildings. The most effective designs draw on late Gothic sculpture, making dramatic use of deeply cut drapery for graphic visual effect at a distance. They can be seen by appointment with Mr Francis Law on application to the courts. Equally interesting are carvings by the O'Shea brothers, who worked with Woolner at the courts, and earlier at the Oxford Museum of Natural History. The O'Sheas carved 'gothic' decorations on Ruskinian principles. In Manchester, they decorated two column-capitals with historical scenes of punishments, including various forms of torture, a scold's bridle, stocks and pillory. The subjects are treated with lively black humour. In Manchester's Albert Square, which extends from Waterhouse 's town hall building, can be seen Woolner's statue of Bishop Frazer (1818-1885), the second Bishop of Manchester. Local legend has it that the Bishop's back is turned to the town hall because of his objection to spending eternity staring at a building he disliked. At the base of the statue are reliefs depicting his charitable activities.

WOOLNER, Thomas Tiresias. London, George Bell, 1886 Octavo; some notes in pencil throughout, but a very good uncut copy in original red cloth, gilt device on upper board. Author's signed presentation copy. Like so many of his contemporaries, Woolner was lured to the Australian goldfields in the hope of securing a fortune. After six months without success he settled briefly in Melbourne where he won a number of commissions including a medallion of Governor Latrobe, and in Sydney a portrait of Sir Charles Fitzroy, and Charles Wentworth. In 1879, during the height of his successful career, he was commissioned to sculpt the statue of Captain Cook which stands in Hyde Park, Sydney. Woolner, famous as both a poet and sculptor, once said 'Poetry is not my proper work in this world; I must sculpture it, not write it'. Click here to see an image of this item.
